The new Surface 3 is interesting because it has 2 different chipsets of both AMD and Intel (keep that in mind). It's still VERY different than the 15" MacBook Pro but people will be looking at getting either. Hi, guys! I need some advice and hope you can help! I now have a gaming laptop - 15,6´ FHD 60Hz app 81% sRGB. Its decent for IPS, nice colors (better than most gaming laptops under 1000$) but...its miles away from OLED or even Retina or Dell XPS 4K. The screen is matte, colors dont pop and speakers are on par with a phone, so just bad. And I no longer care for gaming, but need a really good laptop for watching movies, anime, TV shows. Most important are screen and sound! Followed by keyboard and battery life. I can forget OLEDs, cause the cheapest here in SR are like 2000$ OMG! They pop, cover not just 100% Adobe RGB, but also a high sRGB: Alienware m15 (2019): 265% HP Spectre x360 (15-inch OLED): 258% Razer Blade 15 (OLED): 243% Dell XPS 15 (2019): 239% Dell Precision 7730: 211% Asus ZenBook Pro Duo: 203% Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga: 201% Samsung Galaxy Book 2: 200% Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED: 200% Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon: 199% But again, expensive...and some say not that color accurate as IPS... Best would be an IPS resolution of QHD/4K 12,5 - 16´ with nice speakers. Im thinking 1 MacBook Air Retina, MacBook Pro (best sound, their keyboards have issues, so Im scared), 2 Dell XPS 4K (apparently extremely bad speakers on even the 2700$, but best color accuracy), 3 Surface Laptop 1, 2, or 3 (seems screens are the same, speakers under keyboard are decent), 4 Huawei Matebook 13 or X (all rounder here - nice screen, sound Dolby Atmos, kb...) I’ve had MacBook pros forever and just switched to the surface laptop 3 15”. It was hard after being used to IOS but I don’t think I could go back to MacBooks. I love the surface laptop 3. Great for school and keeps up with everything else.

I have a MBP and Surface Book 2 and honestly, I love them both. I can't see myself with just one of them. Surface are the ONLY PC laptops that I would ever buy. You can have your cake and eat it too. It's just a very expensive cake :-)

So far you're the only reviewer I've seen mention that the Surface laptop isn't meant for gaming. Like for real so many reviewers say "I can't recommend this laptop because it can't run Witcher 3 at 4K 60 FPS ultra settings" and give it bad reviews just based of game performance. Why is the matter that this laptop can't run games like that such a deal breaker to so many reviewers as if people don't use their laptops for other things!? Anyway great vid! I'm a sucker for the surface laptop

Well he did say they are made for different things, where the Surface is focused on light to medium weight productivity (Documents, emails, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, maybe light gaming), the MacBook is aimed to do all that plus some heavier video editing. But at the end of the day a laptop isn't the best for heavy video editing (specially a thin sleek laptop just because the cooling isn't good enough) but if you do video editing the MacBook will do it faster, everything under that will be almost identical

I would go for the surface 3 because I like its built and design. Plus I travel alot so I like that it is lightweight and compact. Plus that black finish is freakin gorgeous especially for someone like me who calls black her happy color.

but remember, the 15" surface laptop 3 has bad battery life because it uses the same battery size as the 13" model, but uses more power (bigger screen + amd cpu)the 13" model on the other hand is great for traveling I think!

I can`t speak from experience either, I just watched some reviews.the good thing about the 15" version is it`s little weight, build quality and the beautiful design for a 15" device.I use a msi gt72s (17" gaming laptop) but plan to buy an ultrabook in the future.I really like 14" inch sized screens and the lenovo s940 seems like a good option for me but it`s very expensive...

Literally just ordered the 15 inch surface laptop today but in the business edition. The business edition comes with an intel instead of ryzen processor. Best of both worlds in my opinion. Can’t wait to get it in the mail.

I use the i7 Intel version for the SB3 for software engineering. It is quite powerful. No slowdown at all. I think it can handle more than light work as you suggest and does. Why suggest that surface products are only good for word processing? Why do all you tech reviewers suggest a 4 core 8 thread machine is only good for light tasks? A 10th gen 4 core 8 thread i7 machine is only good for word processing? How does that even make sense? Remember this is faster than a 4 core 2017 15 Macbook Pro. It is faster than the current 13 Macbook Pro. Where those machines not suitable for heavy work? Did heavy work get so demanding or more so in the last two years?

Given iPadOS is out now, I'd argue students should be looking at either the iPad Air (2019) or iPad Pro (2018) as their daily driver since iPads are portable enough to take anywhere, can double as textbook readers, word processors, powerpoint and excel (or the iWork equivalent) machines, can now connect to external storage and basically do anything a student would need a laptop to do in a much lighter form factor. And I know when I was a student, I would have preferred something like an iPad over a heavy laptop plus all those heavy textbooks. Or go with a MacBook Air if you want the Apple ecosystem but are basically doing anything an iPad would be able to do. MacBook Pros for students are overkill, unless you're going to school for animation, programming, architecture, or something else like those. But for a BA or any social sciences really, yeah you don't need a MBP. I actually did a whole semester of college with just the original iPad and it worked great and that was long before everything iPadOS offered.

I only paid $1500 for my Surface 3 Pro and it does almost everything my daughter's Mac Book Pro does. The real awesome thing about the Surface 3 Pro is the gaming aspect which I did not foresee. I am a GA pilot and sharpen my skills on X-Plane 11. It plays on high settings and can hardly tell the difference between my high end desktop and the Surface Pro as far as play-ability. I also save a ton of money and carry it everywhere easily. Kudos to Microsoft for coming up with a real winner! Now where did I put that money I saved and set aside to dope the flaperons on my new experimental...

I’m currently using macbook pro mid2014 and I’m in the state where i think i should get a new laptop but still thinking should i get a macbook or windows operating laptop since I’ve been awhile in the apple ecosystem. Sure some people might improperly use the MacBook Pro for exclusive light tasks like taking notes and browsing the web, but that doesn’t mean that comparing the two computers makes any sense what so ever. got the surface laptop 3 lowest config with alcantara, it's a bit more expensive here in germany (1149€). i5 1035g7 (best on-board graphic from intel so far), 8gb RAM, 128gb ssd. will upgrade the ssd to 256gb in a year when warranty is gone...that would be a bit more than 50€... very nice experience, definitely an eyecatcher, keyboard, trackpad and screen are super good looking. love it. can do some basic 3d modeling in rhino and CAD, no rendering of course. just wish the RAM would be upgradable, too.

I love my Surface laptop 3! I have the 13.5 inch one with 16gb ram. It's awesome ! It actually does Run games very well. I'm running everything from Diablo 3 to Microsoft Flight Simulator X At high settings. My average frame rates are 40 to 45. Not bad for a laptop with no dedicated GPU. I'm also able to my run many other games that I've downloaded from Steam with no problem. I also use virtualbox and run a lot of Linux operating systems through that. This is an excellent computer.

Microsoft claims 11.5 hours of usage, but its tests are with the display at a dim 150 nits. At a more practical brightness level, with the brightness slider set to about 50 percent, I’ve been getting less than six hours of battery life on average while using the Laptop 3 for my typical daily workload of lots of browser tabs, Slack, email, Twitter, Word, and other productivity apps across a handful of virtual desktops. That’s less than I typically expect from 13-inch thin-and-light laptops, so I’m a bit disappointed with the 15-inch Laptop 3." The Verge's review. The Verge says the 13.5 inch model should have 7 hours of battery life, but the smaller screen and 10nm intel cpu should normally give you a more noticeable jump in battery life- idk. I think the more widescreen aspect ratio of the xps 13 could help with multi window tasks. The surface products shouldn't have coil whine but I don't know about the XPS.

This is one of my favourite youtube comparison video so far. I think I have a right to call myself an apple fanboy by having Ipad Pro, Apple Watch, Iphone 11 Pro. I was hesitating between MBP and SL3. I loved design and OS of SL3, but I felt like I "needed" to get a Macbook Pro over SL3 because of the amounts of apple products I owned. However, after watching this video, I realized that no matter what I say to myself, I couldn't justify paying for that MBP when I don't do editing photoshop and etc. I am a gamer, and I am looking for a portable laptop that is capable of editing documents, writing, and etc. Thanks for the awesome review.

I find it interesting that I keep seeing these two being compared to one another. You should wait for the Surface Book 3 and then compare that to the MacBook Pro. That would be a more fair comparison. Or compare the Surface Laptop 3 to the MacBook Air. That would be more on the same level.

Other than the upgraded internals, the major difference is that the Surface 2 doesn't have a USB-C port if that isn't a dealbreaker go for the Surface 2. If you got the money tho go for the Surface 3.

They both look very sleek but to be honest i would go for the surface 3. Two chips inside? That bad boy is meant to be worked on like crazy. You can do so much with the surface 3 i feel like.. 😤

Let's be honest...unless you won't use anything but a gorgeous laptop there is no reason to buy a surface laptop (or macbook) for general use. There are MANY, MANY better options out there for $500-$800 for that individual. Not enough reviewers cover these laptops unfortunately so average consumers zone in on these "flagship" models when they don't need to.

I think it is wrong to compare surface 3 with MacBook Pro. They built for different purposes. Surface 3 should be compared against MacBook Air and surface book with MacBook Pro.

I use a 2019 MacBook Pro. WONDERFUL laptop. has an 8 core CPU and it shows. I use my laptop for Autodesk Fusion 360, school, and light video editing. Even the Touch Bar, which I thought would be stupid and even maybe an annoyance but actually somewhat useful. 10/10 would rather have it than keys. also the screen is wonderful. Not 4k, but you can't tell the difference between that screen and by friend's dell xps 4k screen unless you put your eyes against the screens. The color accuracy is great. The only bad experience I've had was with the fans. They spin up at the most random times sometimes. updating software for five minutes? Microwave. Playing the default apple chess game from legit 2008 or something? Jet plane. Watching 8k on youtube? okay so maybe that's understandable. I did opt for the potato 560x graphics card. god I regret that. I bought a Vega 56 with a Razer core x within 6 months of purchasing the laptop. Great buy, but get a manual fan control app and if you know you're about to do something intensive, turn on the fans before it gets hotter than the sun and then blasts the fans. I have found a fan control to be wonderful. Apple, if you somehow read this, please please please make the fan curve more aggressive. It should be if you click on a power hungry app the fans turn on instantly to maximize clock speeds. I know I turn my fans up halfway every time I start cadding.
