It wasn't too long ago we were tearing down the Surface Pro 2 and lamenting over the dismal score of one out of ten on our repairability scale. Will the Surface Pro 3 be deja vu all over again? Let's get the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 on the teardown table and find out.

They are pretty rough to disassemble but how prone are they to failure? My Pro 1 has stood up to some moderate abuse with no signs permanent damage.

I have SP3 with cracked screen, and it prevents me to get into the system. Would it work for me just to remove the screen and connect the SP3 to the monitor using the mini display port? I'm asking not trying first just because i dont have the tools.

If you have display broken already, there is a good excuse to replace SSD, mine is slow samsung 140 MBps write speed. I only regret that there is no room for a ram memory upgrade :/

if you guys messed up the screen that means 99.9% of people will do the same so I was expecting a 0/10... plus even if you do everything perfectly it'll never go back together the same without massive time and effort

mAh isn't a measurement of the amount of energy that can be stored in a battery. A 5000 mAh, 5V battery stores a lot less power than a 3500 mAh, 12V battery: 5x5=25 and 3,5x12=42 A correct way to measure an amount of power is WH, or Watt-Hours. You often see this on notebook-batteries, but not on phone or tablet batteries.

@@DataWaveTaGo It's common practice to not get anywhere near the stated battery life levels of a device in standard usage conditions. I don't know how they come up with the "up to" rated battery life. for example my HP laptop says up to 8 hours but the maximum you'll get, even on power saver mode, is 4-5 hours?!

As a repair technician of 7 years now i dont see why this scores a 1 out of 10, its a pretty straight forward repair if you replacing the screen. I guess if your just looking to upgrade the ssd it might be a pain to not cracked the lcd assembly.

@TheSpotify95
@TheSpotify95 4 жыл бұрын
$500 for an upgrade to 256GB is a bit steep, you could have purchased a 128GB microSD card and added that into the card holder, for a total of 256GB. My Surface Pro 3 is the 4GB and 128GB version (i5 CPU), would have preferred 8GB/256GB or 8GB/512GB but I got it this year on the used market and anything else would have been too expensive. I've never come across any situations where 4GB is not enough RAM on it, and the SSD still has tons of capacity left.

Here's the thing. Microsoft realises that people want to use a pen - and most screens just don't work well with pens because the thick glass and separation of glass from display that would make this easier to remove and replace also means a lot of parallax (where you touch the pen to the surface of the display looks offset from where the computer thinks you're pointing). I have one and I've used lots of other touch/pen systems and they got this dead on right - writing on a Surface Pro 3 is almost like writing on paper. No one else comes close to this. So for me, this makes the screen issues irrelevant. I want the best screen to use, not to replace (although both would be better). The real issue is the over use of glue. Everyone uses glue and double-sided tape. That's forgiveable, but given how delicate the screen is, they should have found some other way to hold it in place. Same with the battery - a clip frame would have been better and not taken up any more space. In the end though, Microsoft didn't design it for people to self-repair - they designed it for the best possible user experience and to make it as solid and reliable as possible. As a Surface Pro 3 owner, I can honestly say - this is one of the nicest, most solidly constructed and premium feeling tablets I've ever owned.

I don't think the thin glass has anything to do with stylus, cause the pressure sensor is in the stylus and it uses some kind of magnets to locate the nib, not by contact with the screen. it should be sensitive even when hovering
@TheoWerewolf
@TheoWerewolf 9 жыл бұрын
10shot9miss Err sorry - I should have been clearer. You're mostly right (actually, there's an antenna around the screen that picks up a radio pulse sent by the pen which includes pressure information - and the position of the pen is determined by the relative signal strength to the antenna) What I was talking about was a different problem - parallax. When you use a screen where there's a large gap between the screen and the front of the glass, when you place the tip of the pen down on the glass, it's actually quite a distance from the screen and so it's very hard to know exactly where the pen tip really is relative to the screen because you're looking at the tip from an angle. It makes it hard to pick up the pen after drawing a line and hit the line again accurately when you put the pen on the screen again. This is why Microsoft has a cursor that you can't make go away when using the pen - which itself blocks what you're trying to draw over. This makes the writing and especially the drawing experience a bit off. The Surface, by bringing the screen directly in contact with the glass and making the glass as thin as possible - reduces the parallax almost to zero - making the writing experience much more natural.
