This was a great video to show the proper sequence of disassembly and reassembly. Pull the screen off was a bit scary since I was only using a hairdryer, but I heated up one side, worked the plastic wedge about 1-2 inches, heated up that side again, until I made it all the way around. Well done with the video! My battery swap went flawlessly because of your video. One suggestion, before gluing the screen back on, boot the system to ensure all plugs are attached and working properly. Then perform a shutdown and seal the screen.

I talked to a couple Tech Repair places near me. They both work on PCs but they wouldn't install a new battery for me. Both said they've had problems with trying to change the battery: one said the tablet would "short out.' The other said the touchscreen wouldn't work after replacing the battery. He said he's seen and heard of problems from version 3 to the present. When replacing the battery. Edit: Just saw a comment on another video where someone suggested: "...don't use metal tools. You might short out or damage a device. Also wear an anti-static band..." [sounds like good advice]

If anyone is still using this video take heed. If you start at the right speaking and go down you need to be extremely careful at the bottom right portion. It is a very small amount of adhesive there and it is also where the screen connectors are. If you go too deep you will severe the screen.

A few words of warning for anyone attempting this. The glass of the screen is thinner than eggshell and very very well adhered. I used a heat gun and spudgers and after about half an hour of working on it, when it was about 2/3 of the way off, it exploded in my face spraying little pieces of glass into my eyes. I think I got most of them out, but my right eye is still quite sore so there may be some glass still in there. After you remove the broken glass from your eyes you will need to spend at least half an hour trying to remove the fragments of glass still very firmly glued around the edges of the device. The next challenge is the RF shielding. They are very thin. Somewhere between aluminium foil and aluminium baking tray thickness. They bend very easily and are hooked every couple of millimetres around their edges. Many of these little hooks will break and the rest of the shields will be bent badly. Removing the screws and the connectors is the easy part, so enjoy this part while you can. The next step is removing the battery. Apply a lot of heat before you try this. They have used some kind of adhesive that should not have ever been used outside of heavy industry. The batteries are also very flexible. If you are not careful enough, and I was not careful enough, the battery will burst into flames. On the positive side this seems to weaken the glue just a little bit. Now that I have the machine apart I am taking a break. I will need to wait for the $200AUD replacement screen to arrive anyway. In retrospect I would have done the following things differently: -Be very very very careful. -A regular heat gun is not enough to release the glue. Better to use an oxy acetylene torch. -Goggles, definitely wear goggles. -It might be a good idea to have a fire extinguisher nearby. -And most importantly, next time I buy a piece of electronics I will avoid Microsoft, Apple, or any manufacturer that deliberately makes their devices difficult to repair.
@DIYGeardo
@DIYGeardo 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the detailed feedback on what you think about this repair. We appreciate that and would like to give some thoughts on your summary. -Yes, you need to be very careful. -Well, a regular heat gun will do the work but requires patience. -Safety comes first, and if needed ware goggles, -Fire extinguishers, I would say not really but always good for the house -Lastly, that is how they make money. Break it, don't fix it, Buy a new one

You are welcome, well, this machine is doing the heating process automatically. It goes to about 80-100c (2-3) and stops. If it is not enough, we will run for another minute so that it will be fine. For the battery, we are recommending you to apply the heating step by step. The best way is to apply little heat and cut the adhesive by using a pry tool. And also, the heating duration will depend on the device. some are strong, some are not

Do you not have to re-heat the base just after inserting new battery in position, so that the adhesive re-sets and re-adheres to lock the new battery in position and keeping the battery low and flush so as not to put internal pressure against the screen if old lumpy glue pushes battery higher than it should be (once screen is re-attached)? Its either a problem with the battery itself, as in one of the cells died, or its a problem with the battery connection to the motherboard. Either way, you're going to have to open up the machine and preform whats in this video, but a battery swap would probably work for you.

I don't think you trivialize removing the display on one of these devices, I've done 3 now and they are extremely easy to damage and difficult to remove. The very fact that you cut the video and then went to lifting the display, (showing the shields missing) indicates to me you had a lot more trouble than portrayed in this video and it would surprise me if you cracked it removing it. The adhesive on your display isn't factory and looks more like liquid glue, like T-7000 of something not the black bitumen like stuff which is a nightmare to remove. I have a battery to replace on one of these tomorrow and I'm nervous, was hoping to find a better way to remove them, I like your heat pad and plastic tools, easy to scratch the black paint on the screen using metal tools. Cheers for the video though.

Yeah 100% your display had been removed before the way you're cutting through the adhesive like butter and the shields missing, sorry if i missed you saying that. Also for people attempting this its really easy to damaged the wifi antennas either side of the front camera.

Thanks for your feedback. It is true that devices can damage easily. We have shortened the video on the removing process. Proper heating will help you. And also, some devices are easy to remove, and some are not. I would say different glue or weather conditions. We are using b7000 glue, which is good for surface repairs. it is hard to find an original pre-cut adhesive.

I see in the video that it is in phone mode, and I’m wondering if it’s just for demonstration.
@DIYGeardo
@DIYGeardo 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback.There are two modes in this mat, Phone & tablet, both models are adding heat, but tablet mode is providing bit extra heat. But if you want you can go with the mobile phone option. We find the mobile phone option is enough for tablets as well, but it depends on the device. Best way is to heat up for 2-3 minutes and then add extra as needed. Heating 90c straight for 25 minutes is not good. You need to brake it. Even found out that some devices need extra heating, not sure why, But that is how it is. For some devices even 1 minute is enough.i think It is the usage, local temperature and built quality..We have shorten the video in heating process only, The process is same but the duration depends. ( 15 mins to 1 hour for the complete replacement)

I don't think that you need to remove everything just because you are heating at 65°C. All components can survive that. I would say just heat the screen on heating pad>>remove shield>>heat the battery base>>remove battery

most importantly, remove the batteries very carefully. I removed it at random and the battery burned out right in front of my eyes.

This is horrendous and guaranteed to break if I try it. How do you find an expert? Microsoft are total arsewipes for designing it like this

Do not remove the speakers this way. At least some units (including mine) have the speakers soldered on. I removed as in this video and cannot reattach them. This computer will no longer have sound.

Why would they show a video detailing the least common model. The i7 version was clearly not the one bought by the majority.
