Some very important details were left out and should have been added as comments in the video. I wish I had read through all of the comments below. I installed batteries in two units that the batteries expanded on the same day. First, I did not know there was a pin to line up the ribbon cable from the battery. After starting them and seeing "no battery" on both, I found the pin. But, after pealing up the ribbon cable and putting in the correct position, neither unit started. Then I read in the comments below about shorting the motherboard. Thanks. Now I have two units with shorted motherboards. Just had to have a comment to put a piece of plastic or paper in between and to also make sure the pin is lined up for the ribbon cable.

Thanks so much for the video! To get the battery off and install a new one is definitely super difficult without removing the motherboard due to that little peg others have described. Of course I was too lazy to remove the motherboard so I did it this way and had my young adult son help me place the battery connector onto the peg (hard to see with old man eyes) while I pulled the motherboard away from the case. Not sure if it helped, but during the install, I left a plastic sticky film on the battery connection to avoid accidentally shorting the motherboard and removed it once we got the connector on the peg. Great overall video on a difficult repair!

Thank you so much for the video! I would like to caution those who do this the first time as I did. The lithium battery suddenly burst into flames and I was lucky to avoid injuries! I did not have a heat pad so I used a heat gun to heat the back. They use a huge patch of double-sided tape of exceptional strength to glue the batteries. It was not hot enough even though I set it to 150C so it was impossible to pry the battery off. As I tried too hard and bent one of the batteries, it burst into flames and burnt so hot, spewing ashes and embers out and damaging the surface of the table. So, to get the other half of the battery off, I had to set the heat gun to 300C to blow at the back for 5 minutes and still, the glue did not come off. I had to use a thin, broad knife to push behind the battery and tried not to bend it. It was a big struggle to get it off! So, you need to be very careful with the removal of old batteries! To avoid cracking the screen when removing it when you do not have a heating pad, you would need a heat gun. But the problem is that you could overheat and damage the screen. To avoid this, you can temporarily glue a thin strip of cardboard about 1.5cm wide all around the screen leaving only 0.5cm of the edge of the screen exposed to the heat. This makes sure the only heated area is where the screen is glued to the frame. Pulling the screen off the frame is not easy. Using a tool with suction cups on both sides is one way to LIFT the edge of the screen up and separate it from the frame. Another way is to temporarily glue the tablet down to a table using double-sided tape. This allows a single suction cup attached to the screen to LIFT the screen edge up easily allowing you to slide something like business cards to separate the screen and frame WITHOUT TRYING TO PRY it off and risk cracking the screen. If you try to slide something hard in, you will damage the frame. The frame is not that hard. The top part of the frame is actually made of some sort of plastic (surely not metal). Even a thin wooden blade like a clarinet reed can damage the plastic.

Awesome video man! I just changed my battery with no experience or whatsoever and first-tried it. Also scanned a few other sources though. But this video is the only source that recommends the heat mat and I have to say: get one. Without the heat mat getting off the screen safely is a pain in the ass (I suppose). It was already hard but it's really chill to just wait for the adhesive to be heated up. Watch a video and get ready for the next step. A little critic: This video does not cover how hard it is to get the new battery inside correctly. There are three rather breakable plastic pins, one of which is at the connector beneath the motherboard. It is crucial to mount the battery cable onto this pin, otherwise, the surface won't recognize the battery (Error message: No Battery present). The pin can be broken easily. So BE AWARE.

Simply "insert the connector into the slot". You failed to mention there is a little tiny peg that the battery connector is supposed to slip on. I didn't realize this and I think I may need to go back in and get it on right. The connector must be slightly off. Tablet ran for about an hour and now it isn't turning on.

Yeah that peg is crucial and I think why a lot of these devices get bricked when people change their batteries. The battery connector has to be perfectly lined up with the motherboard and the peg does this. Get that wrong and you have battery voltage going where it shouldn’t.

Good video. Be really, really careful when removing the screen - it is so easy to chip or crack it. Super fragile. You have to make sure that the leading edge of whatever you are sliding between the screen and case to cut the adhesive is pressing down on the case and not upwards on the screen. And of course preheating is essential like the video says.

I am so angry I followed your video. The way you have us remove the battery by pulling it out from under the board while the board is barely wedged up will fry the board. WARNING to anyone who watches this, doing it this way WILL fry your main board. The contacts from the battery, old and new will slide along the bottom side of the board and short circuit it. There is a much better in-depth guide at itfixit where they show you the correct way to fully remove the board while protecting it from the old and new battery contacts. DO NOT follow this fast and loose style of risking damage to your main board!

It’s a lot more screws to undo, but the safest way to do this is to pull the motherboard right out. It’s then very easy to swap the battery out and be 100% sure the connector is in the exact right location for the motherboard to sit on. Get that position wrong and there’s a good chance of bricking the device.

Which type of glue do you use to glue back the screen? Is it a good idea to put a thin isolating plastic sheet (as in laptops on mother board for protection) to save battery from heat from the heat sink? It is the heat making the battery to swell in the first place.
@DIYGeardo
@DIYGeardo 3 жыл бұрын
Well, as you probably know, surface pro 4 has a common battery swelling issue. Well, you can try that, and if not, how about having a stand with extra fans to cool it down. We are using b7000 glue, which is suitable for repairing and easy to melt next time if needed. Sometimes double-sided tapes don't give the strength required to hold the screen ( non-genuine sticky). Most importantly can use with any mobile phone or tablet. and tables

Taking the whole motherboard out makes it less likely to misalign the battery connector with the motherboard, which can fry the board. Once the motherboard is out it is very easy to change the battery and get the new battery connector in exactly the right place. Then put a thin sheet of plastic over the battery connector while you replace the motherboard. Just before fully tightening the motherboard screws down, pull out the plastic. This way the motherboard pins will always be perfectly aligned with the battery connector with no risk of frying the board. But it it is time consuming to undo all the motherboard screws and connector, which all have to go back exactly right.

As you should do that, its not completely necessary otherwise you might as well replace the SSD as most of these devices that experience this have been used for more than 3+ Years and the SSD could fail before the battery dies again

Great video. I watched quite a few and found this to be the most useful and complete (except the fan which I found on another video ;) . When I put everything back together, the screen wouldnt work. Long story short, I replaced the 2 ribbon cables going to the screen and the BT/Wifi antenna (oops). When I power on the screen backlight turns on but the screen has no image at all. I have the Surface hooked up to 2 external monitors from the dock and everything works fine. I just dont get anything on the Surface screen. The "Display" screen even shows that the screen is one of the active monitors. Anyone have a suggestion?

This guide doesn't mention the most important details about removing the screen - the antenna on top is really easy to damage and also the bottom of the screen has way less clearance to remove the adhesive as there are extremely fragile cables really close to the edge of the screen. Now I'm buying a new panel and antenna because of this.

While this video makes the repair look straightforward (and it can be), it fails to mention crucial aspects to the repair: 1. The battery connector needs to be placed into the peg descibed in other videos 2. Don't use a metal tool to pry the battery off the frame; Although I made sure not to have static buildup, I think I still may have fried the board as I used a metal wedge to lever the battery off since my repair kit didn't come with a plastic one Hope y'all have better luck than I did!

No the big danger is that the battery terminals are exposed (stupid design) and if you haven't lifted up the board enough the terminals on the connector are going to touch the wrong connectors on the mainboard and then you are potentially going to cook your mainboard. Haven't done this yet but if you lift the board up, stick a business card or thin plastic between the battery terminal and mainboard while pulling out the battery.

The battery lead is glued in on some model making the whole removal process much harder!, I can see why MS decided to make this harder than it needed to be! Planned obsolescence should be made illegal, this type of device should be much easier to repair for the consumable parts like screen and battery. Perhaps to make them thinks twice a retrospective fine would be good. As all IT devices are now so short lived for the sake of margin we are just wasting perfectly good equipment because its not cost effective to repair because it was designed to be that way.
