Presenting fingertip haptics: touch feedback on flat keyboards and touchscreens. Imagine feeling key clicks while typing on a Touch Cover or a Windows Phone, and locating a tile on a touchscreen through its unique tactile texture. Such effects are realized with piezoelectric actuators and electrostatic haptics technology.

I've actually been asking myself for years why hasn't someone done this already. Since using touchscreens is quite annoying and there's no feedback at what you're "pressing" or "touching" - as she said, more mistakes are made and it feels much less pleasant than typing on my full-sized laptop keyboard here, where I feel the buttons clearly and they're comfortable. So great work, I'd like to try this.

This is genius! This would make typing at touch screens way better, thus requiring you less to use a physical keyboard.

I have no idea how this helps you type, or how this replaces in any way a hardware keyboard since you have to actually touch the screen to feel it anyway.... What I want this technology for is a VR suit... Actual touch feedback in a Virtual Reality world... So immersive it's scary!!

I'm fairly certain that Electro-Active Polymer and electrostatic haptics are not in any way novel. Perhaps with the EAP, Microsoft Research found a way to get the material to actuate much quicker than previously demonstrated, but that'd have to be duplicated for me to believe it.

Microsoft Developer, wouldn't this be easy to develop as a braille phone/tablet?

@Savi™ It's not when you think that a big share of their profits now is from patent licensees and sues so don't worry about them.

This tech is in most phones now. A good example would be the vibration in the screen after texting.... But Playstation controllers with this feedback could be eh... I wouldn't want this in a shooting/fighting game because it would happen nearly all the time. I can definitely see it in VR more.
