I got a Panasonic from Costco ten years ago and the only complaint I have is the push button is so stiff that I end up pushing the microwave backwards everytime I open it. Other than that, it cooks properly, no annoying beeps and easy to use.

Yes! My $1500 built-in Bosch had many issues, and Bosch didn't back their product. First I just needed a spring on the door, but you can't even get your hands on the part, AND if you could, it's nearly impossible to replace without royally screwing up the whole door. Oh, and it didn't even have sensor cook. Then the magnetron went out, twice. I've never had this with a $200 microwave. No more Bosch for me.

95% of the microwave ovens sold are manufactured by MIDEA. Even the big boys like Panasonic, Samsung and LG have opted to outsource the majority of their products to MIDEA. With Panasonic still manufacturing their top premium models themselves. So no matter who you choose, you’ll still be getting a MIDEA. If you’re out of luck (and out of money) it will be a Galanz which is another major Chinese manufacturer of low quality microwave ovens.

The worst ones to buy are the ones that are part of a built in oven-microwave combination. The only reason I bought another one was the new GE fit in the same hole that the old broken GE (which required an expensive repair, when it was relatively new) was in. I finally found one that was on sale for under $2500, instead of the near $4000 that it had been, which was when I stopped thinking about redoing kitchen cabinets to accommodate separate non-built ins. In the meantime, I used a $99 Panasonic counter top microwave, which has functioned flawlessly for several years. I'd also avoid the ones that mount to the underside of the cabinet above the cook top, that also contain the exhaust fan. They are also ridiculously expensive and inconvenient to remove and install. I would much rather see kitchen cabinets set up to accommodate a free standing microwave that can be replaced cheaply and with ease. You can get an incredible counter top microwave for less than $300 and, as I pointed out, one that's more than adequate for around $100. I can't say with any certainty whether it matters which brand you buy.

NEVER buy an over the stove microwave! Had 3, and they all failed! The problem with them? Moisture, from cooking and baking, makes its way into the electronics, and kills them. After the first one died, I was told to make sure and run the exhaust fan while cooking. I did, and soon after, it failed again! The third, I got with my new house, it was brand new, and lasted 6 months! From then on, the microwaves stay on the counter. In fact, the microwave I replaced the failed hood unit, lasted 20 years! That's why I stumbled across this video, researching a new one.

I've never witnessed a microwave break from anything unless it came out of the box broken. Our new house had one that came broken over the range, meanwhile the one I have in my room has been going strong for like 7~8 years through multiple moves, storage in the AZ summer and used all the time. The one I have is a Hamilton Beach and I got it used so it might even be closer to 10 years old, maybe they just don't make 'em like they used to? I've only seen our new one fail. My Great Aunt even has a combo unit microwave built into the wall from 1985 that still works. It's so old the air that cools it vents outside like a dryer, Lol.

+1 on the Frigidaire annoying beeps! The one that came with our house has an annoying beep that won't shut off when you open the door, and prevents you doing anything else while you wait for it to finish beeping. This is one reason we're not considering a Frigidaire for our next one now that the old one is starting to short out.

You are not kidding. We just replaced our built in kitchenaid microwave that was 25 years old and failing. Our only option was another kitchenaid unit and we had to adapt the old trim kit because the new one sat the unit at a completely different height (???why ???). Luckily the new 120v units have a convection /grilling feature built in as well, which is what we wanted in the replacement. We also got a side-swing door unit because , as you said, swing down doors are silly.

The Breville, or Sage as its called in Europe is a fantastic piece to own. However, do be aware that they are a bit hit and miss with quality. I only had mine out of the box and the door wouldn't close properly. My friend was using hers for the first time and the power went completely. After checking socket and fuse she could see no issues. During the call to the store it suddenly came back to life. She still returned it. You must also ensure that there's at least 20cm of space around it, back, front, top and bottom for airflow . Otherwise it will die.

Planned obsolescence is a thing with everything, the only thing that changes with your super expensive appliances is that you hope they don’t discontinue the parts that go along with them cause then your out a subzero fridge or Viking oven in 10 years

Don't buy a microwave oven that turns on when you push up on the bottom of the door. A few years ago, I decided to move my new oven a little farther back on the counter top. I put one hand under the door's edge and pushed up. The oven started running! I tried four other brands before I found one that didn't do that. (The light and the fan ran, but the magnetron did not.)
@BoulevardHome8 ай бұрын
That's a really odd quirk, I've never heard of that before! But glad you found one that worked, thanks for watching!
@PlatypusPerspective2 ай бұрын
Typically all that means is that the door hinge has more vertical free movement than expected, which can be the result of flimsy construction, but can also just be manufacturing tolerances and easily corrected. The effect you saw is how it should work. It indicates that the first interlock switch is doing what it should do and quickly detecting the commencement of door motion, shutting off the magnetron. The interlock switches are just in an interim state in which the fan and turntable operate but the magnetron does not, normally when the door opens this state only exists for a tiny fraction of a second so nobody notices it.

Built- in over here in Europe is not an issue. The space in the cabinet is of standard sizes. You buy a standard microwave with its buiding in kit. If you want to change toma different microwave, you just buy the building in kit designed for the new microwave. I get your point about one of if the ovens in a double oven having a microwave, being potentially problematic, however, I wouldn't even consider a double oven and stack two single ovens so that I can chose what size each is and what functions they have, rather than be lumbered with the choices they make for me.
@Amp17715 ай бұрын
Thank you for typing that. After listening to this I was ready to run back to the kitchen designers thinking 8 made an error. So they are all universal sizes 60 x 60 in Europe?
@neilpickup2375 ай бұрын
@@Amp1771 Yes, housing units are 60cm x 60cm, although we always list them in mm (600 X 600) for some reason. The heights vary from just sticking above the worktop to raise an oven a little, to so high that even someone over six foot needs a step to reach the top shelf! Depending on the unit manufacturer, there will be various options to fill the space not occupied by the appliance, be it door for cupboards or drawers. Sometimes there will even be a special very shallow drawer rather than having to use a blanking panel.
