Hey everybody - I'm seeing some mixed feedback about this video in the comments and I wanted to take a second and talk about it. First off - I've seen some people say this one was rushed. It wasn't! I started my prepwork back in mid-June, which is a usual amount of lead time for me these days. However, I did make it a point to be a bit leaner with the information I delivered I've been worried for a while that the DDDs have become essentially me reciting Wikipedia (I don't do this to be clear, I just worry that's how it comes across). In other words - videos that are more about mentioning every single piece of work, rather than being actually enjoyable to watch. So with this one, I tried to only speak about an album or song or fact if I truly had something to say or if it impacted the story I was trying to tell. To be clear though, I'm not saying I nailed it! I'm just saying I wanted to course-correct a bit. To all of you who have shared honest feedback about the video, I do appreciate it. And I don't wish for my approach to be seen as a sign of disrespect to Charli or anyone who is a fan. I have broader thoughts as well about the DDD and its future as I get older and more things outside of the channel take up my time (good things, mind you!), but I'll share those down the road. I'm starting prep work on the next DDD this weekend. I've got two non-DDD videos I wanna do before that, so it'll likely be out in earlyish Sept. I'll take all this feedback into account as I work on it. Thanks everyone!!

Coming from a non-fan of Charli here, and a fan of yours for 3 years who has watched literally every video of yours. Pretty much all of your post-steely dan videos have made me want to listen to albums by the artists you cover. In this one, you didn't give a narrative or a reason for me, a non-fan, to care about her or her music, and it didn't feel like you had much to say about any of her music. And it's obviously ok to not like or connect with music, and you've proven that you still can make great videos if you don't like artists. (AJR comes to mind) But I don't know if it SHOULD come to mind because I don't know if you like or dislike her after watching this video because that's how little the amount of information I got from this was. Anyway, those are just my thoughts. You are nevertheless a great KZbinr and I am still probably your biggest fan. I hope these mistakes in production don't get to your head!

I'm a crash apologist. When compared to her other works its not the best but when compared to most other pop music coming out at that time, there wasn't really anything like it - and i'm not talking about the singles. constant repeat, crash, lightening, move me, new shapes, all more unique & exciting than 90% of the pop music coming out at that time. the single choices could've been better, and i'm def biased bc that album helped me through a rough patch but i have a feeling crash will still end up having an influence when we look back

Man I was so stoked for this because Charli’s my absolute number one but there’s something about this episode that doesn’t quite carry the same thoughtfulness as your other DDDs in terms of humor and depth given to the artist and their life (and Charli’s memeable history is as storied as her body of work so I’m surprised I didn’t even see a signed douche or a whiff (ha ha) of a poppers reference). Also man, I gotta advocate for Pop 2 a little bit here. I think it’s more than a transitionary album in her discography. Even with the experimentation and more concept-forward approach, I think it’s a great testament to how Charli so seamlessly keeps emotion at the center of her songs, not getting lost in the glitch, chaos, and auto tune. (Also more self-titled representation!!!!! lol) Anyway, it’s always a pleasure to see a video from you Mic. I think you’re awesome!!!

yeah i’d say n1a, pop 2 and hifn were really undersold when if you were to ask an angel what they like about charli they’d probably mention these 3. really out there albums, with a lot of hyperpop and experimentation while feeling refined at the same time. and I feel like it’s something brat managed to capture and what makes it sound so special too

Charli's discog is so interesting to me because she's been around since 2010, embodies early 2010s, yet characterizes where pop has gone since. She was virtually indistinguishable from the early 2010s one hit wonders and then casually changed the course of pop with Vroom Vroom. She's spent the past 10 years since catching everyone else up to speed with her vision and brat's reception shows she's irrefutably succeeded.

I think you misunderstand the "Crash" concept. Charli wasn't just doing a sellout album and using that as a deflection for criticism. The sellout was the concept of the album. There is no deep seeded hatred or critique of the commercialized music industry behind it, it merely seeks to exist in the context of that parasitic indsutry. She had lots of writers on that album, took every brand deal, made viral TikToks, packed it full of popular samples, focused less on production and more on hooks, did late night show appearances, and just generally did everything to make it as commercial as possible. She didn't abandon her producers but scaled back on her reliance on collaborators. The result is an album that is the most sell out album ever while giving her still 100% of the control. It's a concept album at its core just due to how it was conceived. I also don't enjoy all its tracks, but when you're selling out that's bound to happen. There is no "Brat" without "Crash". It allowed her to make commercial sounds in catchy ways while still not selling her career down the river. And even if I don't enjoy it nearly as much as her more experimental albums, it has to have one of the most genius concept albums ever.

Eh, a sellout record being well thought out and totally committed to the bit doesn’t automatically make the music any better. It’s easily her weakest crop of songs since Sucker and that’s not the fault of the sellout approach, that’s on the songs themselves.

Good video... You and almost everybody underrate "Number One Angel" methinks. I feel somewhat similar to you about Pop 2, but partially because I prefer N1A. Roll With Me? Lipgloss? Total underrated classics. But also, Blame it on You, Drugs... I could honestly list all but two tracks as near classics. That's just my opinion but I put it right below the top 3 (which are the same top 3 you have). Also, Crash, though I put it at 6th out of 8 is pretty rad IMO. And Yuck is great no matter what you and Charli think lol!

I agree, i’m shocked he gave Number One Angel and Pop 2 so little time, also happy to see love for Yuck, it’s just a fun track you know?
@nikkilev783 ай бұрын
@@xboxpenguin8705 The first verse into chorus on Yuck are ingenious and so catchy! Number One Angel has been an addictive relisten ever since I listened to it and Roll with Me is a Charli top 10 track for me, one of her best productions and vocals ughhhh! Pop 2 is just as great but for me not better so I guess I just want N1A to get more respect and listens. As far as Crash I respect Charli's right to reject her own work and obviously the drain on her spirit was so real. But for my own listening pleasure Yuck, Crash, Baby and Used to Know Me totally do it for me as much as agreed upon classics.

i was going to say that i feel like number one angel almost always gets looked over or dismissed in discussions like this. i don’t know that i like it more than pop2, but it’s very good pop music that i find myself returning to a lot (ily2, emotional, and drugs are my stand outs). it makes me a bit sad that it’s the only charli album i haven’t seen get its flowers, because it has so many of the things i make her so great as a musician.

Even thought the concept of crash is kind of overshadowed now by the rise of brat, crash as an album is so underappreciated in the pop sphere, it literally is filled with great bangers with great production. It proved charli could do mainstream and do it WELL, specially since people thought she was getting repetitive with her sound and relying too hard on her usual collaborators. Constant repeat being one of my fave charli songs and lightning being very close too. Also that album cover is peak

Yeeeessss, I've been waiting for this DDD ! I first came across Charli in 2014 because of Fancy but it's truly her album Charli that made me a fan. I saw her live during the Crash tour, at a Festival she was playing, and a thunderstorm erupted a couple hours before she came on stage. Thankfully, I stuck around with my friend in the rain and the show went on after. Even if the crowd had shrunk a lot, she gave one hell of a show and I had the best time ! Brat is my album of the year, she has evolved so much and she deserves all of her success !!

Yeah, not to pile on, but this does feel a bit rushed. Considering that Charli has a discography of 8 full-length projects + the Vroom Vroom EP, it's a little odd to see this be 26 minutes vs. like 48-minute videos for Pitbull and Maroon 5. Which are videos I loved, don't get me wrong, but I loved it precisely because you took Pitbull/Maroon 5 seriously and gave them fully fleshed-out deep dives when they're artists people don't really take seriously. Which is why now, with an artist as integral to the landscape of modern musical trends as Charli is, I don't think she was really done justice. I would've loved a deeper look in this instance. For example, you kind of just brushed off the "everything is hyperpop now!" bit without, well, explaining what that means and what that sounds like. What makes POP 2 sound so weird? How did it influence the genre, ripple through her collaborators, uplift PC music to new critical heights? And for a first-time viewer, what even is hyperpop, and how did Charli incorporate it into her music? If I only saw this, I wouldn't really know how her sound changed, except that it started with pop and ended with maybe still pop? What makes Brat different from HIFN or Charli? It can't just be "good," it's good for some reason. You still rule, and I will keep watching everything you make of course! Hope this doesn't come across as too much.

However, I have to admit I have become just a bit disillusioned with the series as of late and I hope to explain why properly. I truly truly do admire and respect both you and this channel so I hope I don't come across as rude or an asshole. If I do, please tell me to kill myself. Lately, I have begun to notice the deep dives are becoming less detailed and thoughtful and I feel as though you might have pulled back on offering your gifted and wonderful expertise on these given subject matters. I don't just mean your musical opinion of an albums quality, although I do think there has been less of that too. One of my favorite DDD was of the Beatles! In fact, it brought me, a hilarious former Beatles hater, to get into them myself following your video and now I own a Yellow Submarine phone case. Not so hilarious now

I’m a huge fan of Charli and your channel but this DDD was a disappointment. I have to echo the other comments saying this felt rushed to capitalize on the Brat hype. Disregarding Pop 2 is wild to me given how much of its DNA is present in How I’m Feeling Now and Brat-albums which you (rightfully) wax lyrical. If I wasn’t already a fan I’m not sure this video would motivate me to dive into her catalogue.

Not gonna lie, this episode feels rather rushed and surface-level compared to some of your other work. Like, I get the feeling you didn't have much to say about Charli, but were only covering her out of either obligation to a fan request or to cash in on Brat-mania.

@@emilyjane7027In his defence, Charli XCX has been on the periphery of pop since the initial buzz around Vroom Vroom died down, only roaring back to proper relevance now. When it comes to records like Crash or Number One Angel, what is there to say really? Mid pop albums, and like all mid pop albums there are some choice cuts to be found all the same. He gave her kudos for being the artist to make the defining pandemic-era album, which is high praise and is something I would also agree with. However, saying Charli had no hits isn’t exactly true. 1999 was huge if I remember correctly. But again, neither the sellout album, none of the trendy producers, the perfectly timed Lizzo collaboration or rave reviews pushed her properly back into pop’s A-list. A pure pop album aiming for the bleachers debuting at 42 says enough. brat however? Flawless, truly the record of its time. Bops for days and cultural heft? What a combo when it’s in action.

Hmmm… I feel like you just wanted to get to HIFN and Brat as fast as possible. I love your videos but this one really missed the mark on what Charli is really all about… Also Pop 2 is THE hyperpop bible. @@ThisisntkikiI mean… in previous dives, he always mentions albums he didn’t like or care for but he always discussed the importance of them in the artist’s lives. That’s what I’m trying to point out here. Especially when the album didn’t just have an impact on Charli, but in the whole Hyperpop scene. Dorian Electra became inspired, AJ Cook became her creative producer, PC music artists rose in popularity, etc., the industry as a whole became more experimental with autotune because of this album. it's really weird seeing the extra exposure charli is getting from Brat having people my age being like "kids these days and their weird music" like Charli's been going strong for awhile. I was 22 when Sucker came out and after hearing I love it and fancy decided to check it out. It's not a groundbreaking album but as someone that grew up on pop punk I appreciated the sorta vaguely punky pop rock of that album and at 22 I really don't think I was actually "too old" for that album. I will say I was aware of and intrigued by PC Music pretty early on, mostly actually thanks to Mitch Grassi of Pentatonix who was a VERY early SOPHIE devotee, he absolutely loved her, so when vroom vroom came out that really solidified charli as someone to watch so I did, and I always thought Boys in particular was a decent hit as well as some of the stuff from Charli. Like it seems pretty normal to be a 30 something Charli fan to me but I guess I overestimated how many people had heard of her before BRAT, and underestimated how big BRAT has been and how much it's exposed her to knew people.
