there is so little 80's memphis footage online. this is surprisingly useful for people trying to see what it looked like in those days

I spent a lot of weekends in the Mall of Memphis in the late 80's to mid 90's (my whole middle and high school life). You would find us at either Mall of Mphs, Southland Mall, Southbrook Mall movie theater, The Crystal Palace skating rink, Southwest Twins drive-in or on the strip, downtown. Boy, do I miss those days, back when Memphis was fun and safe.

Just fantastic footage of my town. Thank you so much for posting this. It’s very rare to find any footage of the Mall of Memphis in particular. It was the happening spot back then! So much fun. Skated there many times. These shots are such a walk down memory lane. I miss this Memphis. I try to stay in Germantown now. Incredibly sad to watch the decline.

Graduated MSU in '87. Nice to see footage of Memphis before it became a crime-ridden cesspool. Thanks for the memories.

OMG!!! This makes me cry man. I never thought I'd see footage of my hometown in the 1980s. I was born in 1987. I remember all of this, especially The Mall of Memphis :D. Thank you for uploading.

They mentioned Saturday January 23rd. And referenced tornadoes in West Memphis ( December, 1987) so all of that is consistent with 1988

That Chick-fil-A above the ice skating rink at the Mall Of Memphis was the first time I ever heard of or ate at one of those places. It was like instant childhood obsession after spending all that energy on the ice rink downstairs.

I totally forgot about the pet store in the mall! My mom worked there from '81 to '88 or so at Penney's. I remember going to Wolf Camera, Radio Shack, and of course, a kid had to have some cookies after going to the Ice Capades... but she never let me go in the pet store!

Oh simpler times. In my fifties now. I feel sorry for today’s generation, my generation was the last one to know how it was growing up in simple times.

Wow. That clip of the Mall of Memphis sure brings back memories! I don't remember what it was like back then (born in '86), but I often went there when I was a kid.

Spectacular Mall of Memphis footage. Very hard to find any video of the Mall at it's peak but this is about the best I've seen. I was probably in that crowd somewhere as I practically lived at the mall in the 80's. So glad I found this video.

from the opening shot i instantly recognized that perkins. a friday night running around between perkins, big daddy's, fun and games, and the closed poplar plaza movie theatre (before it became bookstar) was the pinnacle of junior high entertainment.

I absolutely love the footage because when I was in high school, one of our hangouts was The Mall of Memphis, which no longer exists. Torn down yeeeaaars ago now. Also just to see downtown Memphis before all the chaos of adding all the crap on the riverfront. Thank you for this footage.

Grew up at 4810 Cameo Drive right down the street from Shelby Mall. Went to Brownsville Elementary my older Sister went to Craigmont High 85-94. I remember a lot from those days even though I was just turning 10 when I left. It wasn't as bad back then. I know the footage is the Mall of Memphis, I believe I remember going there.

Man, what a great place back then ! Where did all those good people go? The thugs that are now in Memphis destroyed it. Its such a shame.
