Nice job as always. However, homes and garages are starting to look like industrial substations and boiler rooms which adds complications when things fail. 20yrs+ ago we all ripped out all water tanks in lofts and bathrooms to fit simple combi boilers removing loads of pipework too. Now we go back to it all. 🙈

Hi from Sydney, Australia. Thanks for your interesting videos on solar installation in the UK. I assume using DC string with optimiser gives more options for battery installation and avoiding multi DC/AC/DC conversion losses? Can the optimisers be signaled to shut down in case of fire? There have been quite a few fires here on rooftops (dodgy product or installs) and the inability to isolate the panels at rooftop has been an issue for firefighters. I'd be interested in the DC surge setup. Cheers

It would be great to hear more about the performance of solar batteries during the winter months. I assume their performance drops just as it does with an EV battery because I believe batteries perform best around 20degrees C. Would it help to keep the battery warm if garage temp drops to 2 or 3 deg C? How much drop in battery performance do people experience?

Interesting that you let the armour float, I get the fact that modules are current limiting devices but I don't like anything floating. If the inverter has earth fault monitoring, which I think a lot do have, then it would alert you to a potential issue? I am currently wrestling with have two or even 3 earth systems which I don't really like. Can't export pme to ground mount, but need to earth DC SPD's back in garage and 4 x 50m swa strings, pme dno earth and earthing pme to ground rod for ESS earth in backup if pme is lost. Hopefully earth systems will not have much if any potential differences where they are close. Hope documentation will be read!

@OvalRenewables
@OvalRenewables 8 ай бұрын
Hi there, yes this is correct there is one string coming from the roof and then the SolarEdge battery connects into the inverter like an additional solar string would do. This means the SolarEdge battery can charge with DC direct from the solar. 👍

Is there any reason why the DC, from the panels, can not be taken inside the roof and enphase micro-inverters placed inside the roof?

The SolarEdge system doesn’t use micro inverters like enphase. We are unable to extend the cables between the panels and the optimisers. We can install the optimisers in the loft when it’s an in roof system as the panel cables are long enough. To reach through the felt to the optimiser. 👍

@guffermeister
@guffermeister Жыл бұрын
anything over 3.6kw needs DNO permission to feed back into the grid. This isn't always guaranteed to be accepted and some installers won't do it as it can take up to 3 months for an answer. If you have a battery then you'll need to keep that charged and therefore you wouldn't necessarily be expecting to export more than 3kw back anyway would be the theory I'd be working with
@gingerninja7187
@gingerninja7187 Жыл бұрын
@@guffermeister Hi thanks for your information, what’s up with solar companies not wanting to do the paperwork ,it just seems a waste to being able to generate 7.56kw of solar power, my quote was for 2 5kw batteries, but with the maximum usage of 3kw inverter, I’ve decided not to use the company
@guffermeister
@guffermeister Жыл бұрын
Because it's not guaranteed that the DNO will say yes and many don't want to have a customer hanging around for weeks. Proving you don't need more than 3KW then that size inverter is fine as you'll be dumping the rest in the batteries. The installer may already know there are issues in the area you are and you may be stuck at 3KW anyway....

5:20 simply isn't true. If some of the panels were shaded, it would not lower the output of the other panels, because all solar panels manufactured in the past ten years have bypass diodes... He's talking as if bypass diodes don't exist.
@matthewwakeling4978
@matthewwakeling4978 Жыл бұрын
It's not as simple as that. If you have just a single string then you can still get problems with the total voltage being less than required by the inverter or battery charger. That can be prevented by making the normal operating voltage high enough so it will still work when a panel is out. However it's even worse if you have several strings in parallel, because the unshaded string will provide power at the full voltage but the shaded string won't be able to provide any power at all at that voltage, so a single shaded panel can stop an entire string producing power. A good MPPT converter will try to work out the best voltage to use, but it can't perform actual magic.
@johnthomas338
@johnthomas338 Жыл бұрын
@@matthewwakeling4978 You are talking about two strings running parallel, nobody with any sense does that... You only have one string per MPPT. Your 'problem' is non-existent, because nobody with any sense would run two strings in parallel, you would buy two single MPPT inverters, or one dual MPPT inverter.
@matthewwakeling4978
@matthewwakeling4978 Жыл бұрын
@@johnthomas338 I agree with you. However neither message is being shouted from the rooftops. Certainly the Victron calculator doesn't warn you at all if the panel voltage is quite close to the minimum charging voltage, meaning a shaded panel would stop charging completely, and it also positively encourages parallel strings with a single MPPT charger.
