How to Sail Oceans

How to Sail Oceans

Күн бұрын

With boat chores completed I hop on the bus to Hamilton for some sightseeing. It's quite amazing to be walking the streets of a small but modern city sitting atop a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. I'm soon called back by that Atlantic ocean, however, by an approaching southeasterly gale which has me running for shelter.

How to Sail Oceans while getting a workout! Up the mast, down the mast, up again, down again, stow the dinghy, while racing the clock. You must be a hard nub of iron! As always, thanks for taking us along...

Nice sheltered harbour that!

Yes, although rather large, so you have to move around to get good shelter, depending on which way the wind is blowing. Holding is very good.

New England Ropes makes Dyneema and HMPE chafe sleeves which is great for high chafe areas on halyards or repairing halyard covers and when you want to cover your shrouds that chafe your sails.

Ah, that's an idea, a chafe sleeve would help immensely.

Marlow also makes an excellent dyneema chafe guard in various sizes.

i just watched half a dozen videos about solo climbing, in prep for my own spring jobs.... do you have ANY safety gear? are you really hauling yourself on a 2:1 purchase?
@howtosailoceans1423
@howtosailoceans1423 5 ай бұрын
It's actually 3:1. The safety is a short span of rope I tie around the mast.

I ran my CD27 into a piling tonight that scuffed my hull starboard 🤕 I haven't even began heading that way yet.

@howtosailoceans1423 This CD27 is the perfect boat for me. We'll see how she does crossing the Atlantic, hopefully my will to live is strong enough to accompany my little ship to the other side.

What a nice looking place to visit. Looks modern and tidy. Thats a strange departure policy as bermuda welcomes alot of sailors. 1 hour is not much. Question regarding your ground tackle. How much chain and or rode do you carry. I have same windlass that i will install on my classic 37.

60 feet of 5/16" chain, a swivel to which 150' of 5/8" nylon. The anchor is a 44lb Spade.

One hour to leave after getting clearance seems very short - how common is it to have such a narrow window? I'm guessing it's just about impossible for a solo sailor with with a rowing tender to get to the boat and to weigh anchor within 1-hr of receiving the departure clearance, no matter how fast you run to the tender and row back to the boat, and no matter how well prepared the boat is before you go ashore to get clearance. When you sign out, do they have some idea of your individual situation and the realistic likelihood of achieving the 1-hr time limit? (e.g., it could take a long time to back in some situations and conditions). I'm guessing that they'll give some allowance if someone is actively preparing to depart the whole time after getting clearance: i.e., going straight back to the boat, and then efficiently hoisting and securely stowing the tender, raising sufficient sail, raising the anchor): i.e., not making breakfast and coffee, last minute emails and getting weather routing info, etc.

S/V Resolution is Hull#1 of the three Cape Dory 45s built. I believe #2 is now on Lake Lanier GA, and #3 has been in inside storage at Hinckley Portsmouth, RI for the last 16 years and is for sale. Very tempting!
@christophermelo7889
@christophermelo7889 5 ай бұрын
I'm told #3, while benefiting from the indoor part, has need of a 6 figure refit from the 16 year storage part. That's making it challenging to get a worthy offer for her though she is very worthy of saving.
