Black star uses flat frequency response like many other modelers. They sound great through a pa and great through computer speakers, but put it next to a tube amp and it gets lost in the mix. Just like the name implies, flat frequency, it’s got no life in a full band.

Gotta be the TH-30 for me...just so much fuller on all settings in the mid range. The other ones trade versions of a thinner tone, to me, with the H&K having the next best mid range. That said, I think the Laney sits super clean in the mixes, but the tone of the Orange wins.

Yep, I 100% agree, and I really didn't want to like the Orange amp. In my opinion, the thing is just a total eyesore. They need to remember, these things need to sit in your home most of the time, so I'd prefer it to look like a coop piece of music equipment, and not some giant child's toy. But alas, it did have a far superior sound over the other three. MUCH fuller sounding. I wonder how much trouble it would be to reupholster the thing in black.
@HiHello-ku1fl
@HiHello-ku1fl 2 жыл бұрын
@@pumpkinheadghoul most guitarists love the look of Orange amps myself included as they have a late 60's 70's throwback look to them . I don't think they were thinking of making them look good for in the home but as to be different and recognizable on stage. Plus I think the owner of the company loves the color Orange as he said in an interview. HAHA! I also think the looks are part of their success along with the sound as they do sort of have their own thing in terms of sonics and looks. They do offer amps in black now but not near as popular.

Clean: 1) Orange, 2) Laney, 3) HK, 4) Blackstar. Crunch: 1) (tie) Orange, H&K, 2) (tie) Laney, Blackstar. Rock: 1) Blackstar, 2) Orange, 3) HK, 4) Laney Heavy: 1) Orange, 2) Laney, 3) Blackstar, 4) HK The Orange has the most distinctive character out of all of them. If you like that fuzzy-but-distinct Orange thing, then you'll want it. Plus, along with the Laney, it's got the best cleans. Apart from the Orange, they seem fairly evenly matched. The Laney sounds really vibrant on the clean and heavy settings, but some of the mid-gain settings sound overcompressed. The Blackstar had the worst cleans, but had a Marshallish midrange vibe on most of the other stuff. The HK handled everything competently and sounded good, but seemed a little generic on the metal riffs. I'd probably go for the Orange, and if I didn't want that, I'd have to sit down with the Laney and HK and see which one had the best feel.

I came into this video really wanting the TH-30 to crush.....but ended up loving the HK. I think the palm muting sections were most illustrative of the differences. The Orange has a great thick strummed chord tone (favorite for open sections like that), but when it comes time to get tight and percussive, the HK really sounded clear yet heavy.

Great demo, very surprising! All the clean tones sounded flat and lifeless to me tbh. The Orange had the best gain tones even with the fizz. Just sounded bigger and more open. I've been gigging a Blackstar stage 60 for a few years and the OD channels sound too thin/compressed at band volume so I just use it as a single channel amp on clean and add dirt with pedals which sounds so much better! The HK had the 2nd best gain tones to my ear and the other 2 were simply unusable imho.

First off: Big thanks for this video and all the work you put into it. For me, Orange won completely, right behind H&K. It was surprising how (from my subjective point of view) Blackstar sounded centered and obscured. After careful consideration and reading all possible reviews, I ordered H&K. It seemed to me to be only slightly worse than the Orange, but it was very portable, very richly equipped and had great reviews. I was surprised when it arrived. Basically, it's a really cool device: - amazingly small and portable - incredibly loud. The sound is crystal clear, the distortion is great. Basically, it's an amazing device. But that's not what I was looking for. If I played rock, I'd probably be perfectly happy. But I'm looking for a warm and round tone and I couldn't get it right. I really tried. But the sound, which is certainly of very high quality, is too "streil" for my taste. It's probably similar to the old tube radio and shellac records. It played poorly, but had a wonderfully warm sound. In contrast, transistor devices in the HIFI class played great, with an incomparably better frequency range. But the warmth of the old radio was simply missing. So I returned the H&K. And he ordered Blackstar, which was originally a failure for me. Well, what can I do about it..? :-) PS: Here you can see how impressions from the video can be treacherous. :-)

The Tubemeister is the clear winner in the clean test. Its cleans are very pristine sounding, I would say it sounds even cleaner than a Fender Blackface amp, that's quite a huge feat. The TH30H sounds the second best in cleans, it has very complex cleans that one won't hear from other amps. The cleans of Ironheart sound good too but there's nothing unique about them, they sound like the generic Marshall style cleans heard on most 80s albums. For the crunch tones Ironheart sounds the best. It has that old 80s style brown and glassy crunch tone that makes it sound better than other amps in the test. The TH30H has a good crunch tone too but it doesn't suit the musical style used in the test, it has the old school 70s style crunch tone. I can bet if the music played in the crunch test was something 70s inspired then Orange would have won the test. For rock tones it's a tie between the Tubemeister and the Ironheart. Both of them sound very open and their glassy tone cuts beautifully through the mix. In the metal test Ironheart ruled the roost, to be honest it was pretty much the only amp that sounded good in the metal test.

Yea, the Laney. I play out with one. For metal, tighter than frog's ass, especially in lower tunings. Had a th30, sold it. Not for me. Haven't tried the Blackstar, but the HK is killer too.

TH30 followed closely by the H&K for clean, crunch and rock. Surprisingly I pick the Blackstar for the metal tones though. Weird!

The Laney and Blackstar are more focused and compressed they don't fizzle on the top and and sag like the other amps I think the Laney and the Black Star have more gain the Black Star would have more of a tonal range with the features that it has anywhere from American metal to British metal with the controller

Laney won the cleans I think. More chime or something. Crunch was between the Orange and the Laney. Orange was more raunchy and the Laney had something cool going on in the lower mids. The other two amps sounded a little squished and did not have as much cut. Rock was between the Blackstar and the Laney for me. Blackstar had more clarity in the single notes down low, so the Djent crowd might like it. Laney just sounded cool and reminded me of Sykes for some reason. Laney won Metal hands down. Bigger balls. P.S. Considering boosting a crunch tone is one of the most popular ways of getting a metal tone, I think that is missing from this vid. For example, boosting a JCM 800 with a SD1 type thing is a classic setup. That Euge Valovirta channel with his Bad Boy amp is a great example of that. Great metal tones. IRs? I run a Freyette PS-2A that cost a fair bit to import to NZ. Into DAW with IRs etc. Once the signal is loaded down and goes thru DAW and back out my monitors, I find the tone is not that different to a good amp plug-in. It is a bit different, but I sometimes wonder if it is enough to be worth all the cabling hassle etc (just plugging my guitar into my interface's DI and double clicking the Reaper icon is so bloody easy -- more consistent tone too, because amps can be finicky depending on mains conditions and RF interference etc).

The shop I work at carries Hughes and Kettner. So I had to take one home for some "product research.". We only had the Grandmeister in stock, so I wasn't able to try the tubemeister, but man I wasnt impressed with the high gain sounds from it at all. I got STOKED to check it out after watching your video here. Have you played through the Grandmeister 40 also? If so did you notice a big difference tonally between the two when it comes to the high gain sounds?

Th30 is a wall of sound with very extended range of frequencies from bottom to top is monster, but mid range could be limited in some settings on the shape control which can limit it’s versatility, otherwise is a clear winner but if it only about the mids, blackstar have the meatier lower mid and upper mids that will cut, second by Laney,HK is meh

So I got the Laney! Local store for 599 eur. Ive a question for ya - you used an IR in this demo but the Laney only has a direct out with a build in cab sim which cannot be turned off. How did you record your Ironheart? Im thinking I need to get some DI box like a Torpedo captor for it so I dont have to use the built in sim.
@arkhisanidiot
@arkhisanidiot 3 жыл бұрын
I got the laney and a torpedo captor 8ohm. The in built sims from the amp and the torpedo aren't that great IMO. the torpedo captor offers you a 20db attenuation which is great when you play at home. But the really cool feature is the wall of sound plugin. You can only run it through your DAW, but the IR's are just awesome ! I plug my amp to the loadbox, and then to the focusrite with an XLR cable.
@stephenbradley3153
@stephenbradley3153 3 жыл бұрын
@@arkhisanidiot Thanks man, thats the exact setup I was thinking of. A Torpedo Captor 8 directly into the Focusrite so I can bypass the Laneys cab sim, and use the torpedo as a load box so I can pump the Laney's volume up high while the cab is disconnected. I will be using some IR's I already have and also checking out the Wall of Sound.
