The ol' tunnel vision where things stop sounding better or worse, just different. That's tough to deal with.

What do you think about alternatively rolling some of the highs in the middle channel off so your move of boosting the clap doesn't increase the high hat beyond where it seems right, since you have already established a nice place for it in it's entire freq spectrum in the sides? Have you ever used Waves Vitamin? Using that plug-in was the first time I started thinking about mix placement in the stereo field based on frequency since it allows you 5 different bands to 'inject' harmonics into and a way to separately pan each frequency range you define. I got 'excited' about it at first, but it was just a 'phase'. I stopped using it, but I think I might have just been overdoing it?

Could work, sounds like good problem solving to me. I like Vitamin, it can be useful for just "boldifying" something subtly. I do find if I can really hear it working, either the saturation or the widening, it's usually too much.

I recently recorded my drum kit using the m/s mic technique you detailed a few videos back. The mic that was mid is louder than the fig 8 I used for the sides. It sounds good, and I know the answer to most questions like this is 'whatever sounds best in this situation', but as a general principal, how loud should the side information be compared to the mid? I noticed in this example you chose to boost the level on the sides slightly and I think that increases the perception of width. My thought is that if I'm going to add a vocal which is going to be all mid, then maybe I should have the mono/mid mic of my drums a little less and raise the level in the sides? I mostly record vocals to 2-track beats, so I've never really thought about this vocal and m/s mixing perspective when I have all the instruments on separate tracks. Thanks for the help!

As a starting point the m/s should be equal in level (L, R, M all coming in equal), and then just adjust based on how much width and cymbal you want vs kick and snare. Once you pull in the vocal you may decide you want less mid - or you can balance the mid signal with the vocal, and then balance the side signals after.

When you are eq-ing the 808s do you prioritize what note is being used the most? In this example its mostly one pitch, but there is the more tom-like roll that has 3 other higher pitches. Isn't the eq-ing on the lowest boom, going to affect the higher ones differently? Would that be a consideration for you, and if not in this 2-track example, would it be in a multi-track mix where you could isolate those higher tones that only come in every 4-8 bars? Thanks for the tutorial!

Yea, that's a good point. 808s are tricky because the lower they go the harder they become to hear even at the same level. Which makes them a little tricky to mix, and especially hard to fix up if it's a 2trk. I do frequently separate high frequency 808s and low freq 808s onto separate tracks, and then sometimes add some subtle distortion to the really low ones to help them stand out a bit. In terms of emphasis a lot of the times it's more about rhythm - I want the 808s that hit on the downbeats to stand out and hit hardest. So whatever gets me that result.

Love the content, could you do a video about mixing a vocal with a 2 track? Have you ever thought about having a KZbin member exclusive content? Something in between your web page and this? I will subscribing to your webpage content soon. Just got so many mixes to get done. Lol

First video I did on the channel is mixing vocals to a 2 track. I've never thought about KZbin exclusive content - but to be honest, I don't even monetize my channel. I did for a min but then I turned it off, it's not really worth it. So I'm not sure I would trust KZbin with a paid membership thing.
