My grandma LOVED bees and I made her Crosstitch pictures and all kinds of bee things while she was alive. Then I discovered your bee vids and I myself have fallen completely in love with bees! Thank you Emmy for indirectly connecting me to my grandma and her memory ❤️.

I have been worried about your bees since the polar vortex came through. I was looking in some beekeeping forums and it seems a lot of people lost their hives when it came through being so cold. So i'm hoping the next update is soon and the bees are okay.

Bees are OK. Though I did recently help a friend with a dead out which I'll be posting about soon.

I love seeing the bee blogs. Do be careful when working with organic compounds. You should have full goggles on. I know it is awkward with a full cartridge respirator. The vapor could get up underneath the regular glasses. This comes from experience. Hope everything is well!

This is awesome! You are by far my favorite KZbin channel, Emmy. Everything you do is incredibly informative and delivered so eloquently. I have a sort of Apiphobia, but bees still fascinate me, it truly is amazing to see how they work and how brilliant they are. Emmy, I really enjoy all of your videos and channels, and it's been so fun watching you build your empire of bees! 😄 Question: I'm sorry, and I'm sure you probably get asked this alot but, Do you get stung often? Are you immune/just used to it now?
@MsCherade95 жыл бұрын
Honey bees won't sting unless they have to because stinging you kills them. So they are much less likely to sting you than you might think. There are several bee keepers on KZbin who don't actually wear a beesuit unless they absolutely need to, look up Jeff Horchoff!

@emmymadeextras5 жыл бұрын
As jemtebelle said observation hives have clear panels so you can watch the bees, but they're typical a small population and kept indoors so that can remain warm. Some hive boxes have clear windows on the sides, but from what I've seen it's difficult to see much of anything.

We have a lot of snow at times in Michigan that was a problem every winter. I got smart and made aluminum awnings that over hang the landing board. They work just great, and save many trips back to my hives to check and clear snow from the hive entrances I have upper entrances that about five feet above the ground as an emergency entrance and for venting, These cant be used by the bees for house cleaning.You must keep the lower door open so they can carry out any unwanted material out of the hive.

I took it out because they tray was filling up with rain water and making a muddy mess. I had it in there mainly for smothering small hive beetles although I believe it smothers the varroa that fall into too, but during the winter the pest are less of an issue so I emptied it out.

emmymade www.hopkinsmedicine.org/integrative_medicine_digestive_center/news_events/corn_syrup.html. The corn syrup is bad for bees. I mix 5 pounds sugar with 1 cup water, put it on a cookie sheet and heat to 275 F. This cools into fondant and is all sugar. Sometimes I add bee pro pollen.

Oxalic acid is a naturally occurring component of honey (as well as some plants, soil, etc.), & has been found to not be detrimental to a colony when used responsibly. Full disclosure: I highly doubt Emmy would intentionally endanger *any* creature in her care, but since I'd rather not rely on my bias, I decided to check out the issue for myself; especially since I have zero, first-hand experience in beekeeping. If you do, how would you handle such an extreme, Varroa mite infestation in your colonies without treating with oxalic acid?
@emmymadeextras5 жыл бұрын
Sadly, yes. A friend of mine recently lost her hive due to ineffective mite treatment. A bit of a catch-22 the whole treatment thing.
@bodyofhope5 жыл бұрын
I suppose it's a little bit like medication at the doctor, antibiotics and such. We don't want to put that into our bodies either but if we don't want to die, or live with illness, we choose treatment. Emmy is inoculating her little bees so they don't die from mites.
