I remember this day well. I just missed getting hit by the tornado that landed in Flushing by about 5 minutes. When I got back home to Brooklyn, I started hearing rumors about tornadoes hitting NYC. I saw the news and how people said that there was a tornado in Brooklyn, one in Queens, and this downburst that you recorded here. The next day, I went out and looked at the damage in your area and in Flushing, and I'll never forget how those areas looked. To this day, if you were to go on Jewel Avenue from Forest Hills to Flushing, you can see trees that were damaged from the tornado that went through there.

Katrina was very devastating without a doubt. I was born and raised in NYC and no one would have EVER expected such a storm as what was delivered last week. I truly appreciate Torvidstock for sharing, because I was luckily in Long Island (south shore) when it occurred and once I returned that evening at 9:15pm, I couldn't comprehend the impact of th storms once I arrived to Juniper Valley & 69th st--the path of the storm that destroyed your area of video too! thanks (again), C~

This is some insane footage. I got hit with that storm driving home from work, but nothing like that. Looks like all the wind went through your area and we just got the rain. Glad everyone is okay. Glad you liked the video! Yes, this was one of the worst storms to hit my area of Queens, NY since August 1985! For many parts of the country this would have been considered a typical severe storm, but for us it was a lot more than that! Certainly one of my most intense videos, at least locally shot.

JEZUS CHRIST!!! That's the most powerfull storm I've ever seen! 8O This is just UNBELIEVABLE :O Great footage, Scott!!! I'm glad you're still alive :D I was surprised in your previous video, when I saw only one big tree broken by a storm, but in this video there are hundreds of fallen trees! Just too insane for words :D Who in the hell can dislike this anyway? Like they have seen better storms than this xD I'm going to add this in my favorite list :P This should be your best video, right? :)

@LuvsTstormTapes That is pretty wild James! And yes, we did have some pretty serious storms back in July 1985, and late August 1985 which if memory serves me right, was the last really serious wind event directly related to a thunderstorm here in the Middle Village/Rego Park area. Looks like we're getting more lightning out side now. Gonna go and watch!

@hebneh You and I both! I thought for sure that there would be serious injuries and deaths and was very happy to hear there wasn't. Absolutely! I travel out to the midwest every spring and storms like this are common occurrences there. What is a garden variety storm there, makes headline news here haha! @ChrisZennNYC You're right about that! No one here, not even me expected a storm like this! @Arm4g3dd0nX Good question! The trees in my area are very old, but more importantly...many of them have hollow trunks, therefore there's not much holding them up to begin with and that was why several snapped midway up...as far as the ones that were torn out of the ground, I think the reasoning is somewhat the same, the trees are old and not super strong. Plus, some recent rainy days saturated the grounds as well. the buildings are much stronger and can withstand more. Thanks for watching!

Nice storm. We had an event like this here in Houston the other day. An EF1 destroyed some apartment buildings a few miles from my house. I didn't get any damage, but the sky got very dark just like this with a bluish/greenish light. You knew it was going to be bad just by the look of the sky and the way the lightning was happening. Storms like this are rare here, but have been more common lately due to the building El Nino. Just last month I had hail damage.

Scott, some thoughts on the wind direction change. Since you were viewing to the northwest & the macroburst was traveling roughly west to east is it possible that the wind shift you are seeing is due to the outflow changing direction as a result of the macroburst moving from west to east?

All the damage seems to be in the same direction, indicating straight line winds. Is it possible that you had a strong rear flank downdraft/microburst?
@ScottMcPartlandNYC13 жыл бұрын
@skamony2001 Yep, the official NWS assessment of this event was determined as a 125mph macroburst. The strongest winds were about 1/2 block to my south where a neighbor of mine recorded a peak wind gust of 122mph on his home anemometer. Thanks for watching!
@ScottMcPartlandNYC14 жыл бұрын
@Fleebob Here's what I find interesting though. The confirmed EF1 tornado touched down exactly 1.73 miles to the NE of my location. Even though what I experienced was officially designated a macroburst, there is still a very evident wind shift from the SSE to the NNW shown on my video. I am wondering if the tornadic circulation was consolidating right on top of me at the time. I may send this video to the NWS for them to take a look at :)
@Moonraker1111 жыл бұрын
Wow, 3 year anniversary already... A couple of questions... 1) Do you consider this a 1 in 10 year event, 1 in 50 year event or 1 in 100+ year event? 2) What time of the day did this occur?

@10sup10 Actually, he was taking a picture of the damage himself, lol. This was in NY LOL. The peak winds were about 1/2 block from my location, where the garage collapsed and just east of there on Woodhaven Blvd where the huge Oak trees were snapped and thrown into the Boulevard. Winds in excess of 100mph are needed for that kind of damage. Full NWS assessment was also done in my area and it was confirmed. The topper was a neighbor of mine in the worst hit area recorded a peak wind gust of 120mph with his Davis Weather Monitor II. Regardless, thanks for watching!

@cantbreal4ever Thanks for watching! But actually, they were very much hurricane force gusts. My neighbors anemometer registered a peak wind gust of 122 mph, and the official survey from the NWS determined that the peak winds in the worst hit areas (which were about a block from my house) were 125mph. The extreme winds didn't last long, but they were intense! Either way, you're definitely right, impressive for NYC! Thanks again for watching!

@mypuss77 Yep, I head to tornado alley every spring and have witnessed many storms in that part of the country. The official NWS survey labeled this event a 125mph macroburst, granted the strongest of the winds only lasted about 20 seconds, but that's definitely up there in the hurricane force category. One look at all the damage tells the story :) Thanks for watching!

@tornadovideostock: I couldn't agree more! With just a bit more than 1700 views as of this morning my guess is a lot of people haven't seen this video including probably the NWS. @suffern2 Not all the time. When chasing storms in the mid west the green sky can be indicative of large hail, or extremely heavy rains.
