i dunno, it's all very .. pop sounding? all of it. this band just has a samey 'generic' sound to it in a way i can't even describe. it's been around my entire life and just sounds like background noise. they've never incorporated anything abrasive in any way, it's meant to sound easy to listen to. not that there's anything wrong with any of this, but it definitely doesn't jump across genres to the degree that i think people are giving it credit for.

@@mk_gamíng0609 you're missing the point, there is nothing abrasive about Gorillaz was mainly what i'm getting at, which is almost an entire half of music. there is nothing offensive, hardcore, loud, or in your face about Gorillaz. @@fin_is_sad That's true too. It is getting a bit concerning that more labels are doing that now. Capitalizing off dead artists and their music that wasn't ever meant to be released since it wasn't finished. I feel the only good post death album that has turned out great was Mac Miller's Circles, thanks to Jon Brian who worked closely with him during both projects and knew the vision Mac was going for. Most albums other than that though have definitely just been cash grabs from the labels. It all just seems very sadistic considering that the best thing (from the perspective of the labels) that artists and primarily rappers can do to boost their career and streaming numbers is to, well, die. Again, very sadistic moves being made from the labels.

It was even criticized in 2005 for being overly gloomy and being overdramatic with the vision of the world it painted and many were basically like "Oh please, things will never be THAT bad. This is just over the top." Flash forward to ~2015 and the tone of the album perfectly fits the era and the vision of the world it painted feels eerily prophetic and perfectly describes the world of the late-2010s. @@Dragon-Believer Hatsune Miku isn't even a good comparison because she is a voicebank, not an "artist", in a classical sense. More like am instrument VOICED by an artist. On the other hand, we have actual concerts with fictional idols like in Idolmaster, where the voice actors go to the stage and sing songs from the games while in character. Sure they are physical people, but their songs aren't "sang by them". Or further even, V-idols/V-singers like Suisei Hoshimachi, who NEVER revealed her face, and different from Hatsune Miku, she actually performs in mocap suit for the hologram concerts, which is nearly 1:1 what Gorillaz does. The people whose voices are behind the characters are all on stage, but not showing up physically.

Amarillo is actually one of their most thoughtful tracks. It feels and sounds like Amarillo on an overcast fall morning, or evening. It's one of the most sung about cities in American music, but is the best representation of it. The only part that doesn't fully work is "I got lost on the highway" as the streets are nothing compared to other cities, but then the whole city feels lost.

YES it gets way too much band-wagon hate as I would call it. It’s a special album to me because from the very first time I heard it in full, knowing the general idea of the themes it was trying to tell, along with the song visualizers and everything combined to make such a clear picture of the non-existent movie to go along with the album. It truly brings you in and immerses you to the point I can imagine each and every song’s location and story as the band is traveling to and then going up a skyscraper full of end of the world parties on each floor like Damon mentioned was the idea for the record in some interviews. Including the Deluxe bonus tracks! That continues the story and theme into an Epilogue of sorts. Though it’s still not my favorite of their albums overall it’s the only one that created such a clear picture of the story for me to follow along like that, of any album really!

@@RefMr the idea of an end of the world party was honestly so freaking cool, and i adore the pure story telling of each song. i 100000% agree with you on the band-wagon hate, it truly does get too much hate, and i think its because people were expecting an album full of "feel good inc."s, "clint eastwood"'s and "rhinestone eyes"'s, rather than examining and understanding that past gorillaz albums were all a bit different in their own rights, and that this album was no different. its unique sound and the visualisers, as well as the music videos tie together to form a trippy, apocalyptic mood that sets the tone for the time period and year it was released. i love that in the albums, they included the little interludes that were also present in plastic beach, and to me it felt like the "in between" floors, changing directions and getting closer to the end, and i *love* it

Gorillaz is such a unique group, and they do it very, very well. I've been a fan since their first album dropped and saw them live for the first time last year, needless to say, I was not disappointed! They have their own style, but it encompasses every style out there. I think it also says a lot to have someone like Stevie Nix do your backup vocals 🤭

Damon is a absolute geneus i could care less what people think and together with Jamie's Art style and visuals makes them together a Super force of imagination and purely Original it doesn't matter what set genre you claim to enjoy over another at the end of the day Gorillaz seems to have somthing for you and has also expanded your music library to genre's you would have never thought of ever experiencing. My 3 year old is absolutely hypnotized by the music videos and he loves the music attached to them. Gorillaz are just unstoppable and I am always looking forward to what comes next

Thank you for another amazing video! I knew when I clicked here I would hear a concise and informative history of one of my favorite "bands", I recommend that you give The Now Now another patient listen. Its an album that I keep returning to, because of its chill second half which is perfect for relaxing and zoning out. Kansas, Idaho and Magic City are all mellow bangers. I'm not sure why this album was slept on, but its every bit as good as anything that they've (he's) ever done. I think that the lesser amount of features on this album led people to skim through it, but to me it just proves that Damon can make great music with or without other talented artists that he wants to work with. Also, the new album is absolute fire, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Have a good one!

Enjoyed the video, but I couldn't help but notice that quite a few British Gorillaz collaborators didn't get a mention. So, fellow countrymen, take a bow: Johnny Dankworth, Shaun Ryder, Roots Manuva, Bashy, Kano, Gruff Rhys, Mark.E.Smith, Noel Gallagher, Benjamin Clementine and Skepta.

Damon Albarn. Being a Oasis fan there was little feud between blur so we’d talk shit on blur stupid hard. The homie was playin blur the other day we kept with the tradition then the homie busted out you know the lead singer of blur is the same dude in gorillaz.😂😂🤣🤣🤣 we were so blown away. What a change in music style and delivery on the part of Damon. Really interesting to switch genre’s in a drastic way like that.

I can confidently say that Plastic Beach is one of the most ambitious and significant releases of the 21st century. A vital checkpoint in music history, and pop culture. UPDATE: just bought it on vinyl today, and met someone whose brother plays live with gorillaz on backup vocals. The 6 connection rule is real. Literally, Me > My friend who works at the store > A customer at the store who I became friends with > his brother > Damon Albarn. My conclusion is that the world can be a small place. Today was the most Gorillaz day ever.

I didn't know people disliked the visual element of them being animated, that's a massive part of the vehicle the music is carried through.
@PanteraRossa
@PanteraRossa Жыл бұрын
I tried to explain this to my friends like 15 years ago how this band was basically an animated cartoon band and the human musicians that play their live shows are the guys doing the soundtrack of the Gorillaz movies. Kind of how Pink Floyd is technically the surrogate band that made the soundtrack to The Wall. They were like "what?" until there was that falling out between Damon and the graphic artist after Plastic Beach that led him to do Everyday Robots and reunite with Blur during the hiatus. Then it became obvious that yeah, Gorillaz IS the cartoon band. There is NO Gorillaz without the animations and videos.

I don't know why g-sides and d-sides aren't considered gorillaz albums... they have lots of great songs on them and just beacouse they have some mixes of old songs on them, don't make them a full grown lp's somehow :(

G-Sides and D-Sides are essentially bonus tracks from the first Gorillaz album (G) and Demon Days (D) and were recorded at the same time as them with several released before hand, they weren't really made to be Albums but more of compilations of songs that didn't quite make the cut and don't necessarily need a mention. Think of them more as a extra disc to those albums, still great regardless.

I think one of the most interesting things about Gorillaz is that even if they're not quote on quote a "real band" and even if their music pulls from a bunch of different genres, I feel like I can almost always recognize their songs. There is clearly a unified and consistent vision amongst all that variance and flexibility they've built for themselves.

I still think the problem with Humanz and The Now Now is the amount of filler songs. If the best of both records had been one solid album, it would've been a fantastic comeback and return to form a la Plastic Beach. I mean, Saturnz Bars, Andromeda, Tranz and Hollywood for example are great songs.

Gorillaz is one of my first memories of music when I was younger, alongside Daft Punk. They are innovative, evolutionary and stay true to themselves - a not-give-a-fuck, do-what-I-want attitude. Safe to say they keep breaking boundaries, to this day, and I will be here for the next time they break another boundary again.

I’ve recently become a fan of Gorillaz. Before I couldn’t really say I was a huge fan before because I had only listened to 1 or 2 of their songs before but now, I’ve started to listen to wayyy more of their songs and I have to say, it’s amazing. Genuinely. It’s so cool on how they have so many different types of music but are still Gorillaz. I am so glad I’m listening to them, anyone who isn’t is missing out. Forgot to mention this, but I also really love on how each band member has their own personality. I think 2D and Noodle are my favourites but I still like them all.
