My Dad was from Middlesbrough. He always cheered for their football team. I know nothing about it. My Mum thought his accent was unbelievable. She was drawn to him because of his appearance and his accent. First I've ever seen of a street in Middlesbrough. It was always just a name we all heard. I'm going to go and look up some Middlesbrough videos on KZbin now. First time for everything.

That used to be the posh part of SB… with the ‘Dutch Houses’. I was brought up in Surrey Street in early 60s, which used to be where the old railway station was, it’s now a traveler’s site. South Bank was a vibrant industrial town back then. Lots of work… my dad worked 43 years at Smiths Dock, as did I every summer. My grandparents used to run a corner shop, coach trips,Xmas clubs and fostered a great sense of community. People started moving out late 60s. The A66 cut through the town and cut it off from rest of Teesside conurbation. It’s been starved of investment, lack of jobs, lots of anti-social people dumped there by councils.

Born and bred in South Bank. Back in the 50s and sixties, Bevanlee Road was in the posh end of the town, My mother used to drool over the "Dutch Houses", which were bigger and posher than the street house that I grew up in. I also lived in North Ormesby for a couple of years before I emigrated to Canada in 1967. Thankfully, my mother, who was living close to St. Peter's in her final years, has long passed away. She'd be horrified to see the conditions in South Bank and Middlesbrough these days. I had a happy childhood there

Loving these films , by Billy Moore . When you have lived all your life in Boro , you just accept the poverty , violence and downward slide of society . The Council of course , help this decline , with the demolition of beautiful historic buildings , aiding influx of unwanted migrants , and giving free rent to Eastern Euro shops , for years !! When one gets shut down for illegal cigs , they re-open within a month . When it's an English shop keeper....closed forever .

I know that street well.. ruined by several generations of a few familes living next door and across the road from each other.. It was always bad but not always the worst street, most of the worst parts have been demolished now.. You could buy a trashed house in southbank for £15k in the early 2000s, investors out of the area would buy them at auction and get the shock of their lives when they realised what they bought lol, half the time they'd be trashed and burnt out again before they could finish renovating them. I remember the council totally refurbishing the bottom end of cromwell road, as soon as the onsite security was gone, they were stripped of anything of value, smashed to pieces and set on fire. Council gave up and started demolishing streets.

My mam was one of 7 kids (catholic) from South Bank and my dad was an only child (prod) from Grove Hill. Theye were good areas when they grew up. Quite sectarian back then. The Boro accent is a hybrid of UK and Irish work gypsies who arrived from everywhere and made home in makeshift camps on the Eston Hills at about the same time the gold rushes occured in the States and the Klondike, Canada. This part of Eston is called California, because the place flooded with rough workers during our Iron Stone rush. Boro people pronounce work, shirt etc, like Scousers. If anyone from out of the area remarked about it, they would be met with "Me dad's one of the berks, who werks down the werks with his purple werk shert" It was the highest concentration of Irish immigrants after Liverpool. That may explain so many drug connections between Teesside and Merseyside.
