Friendly reminder for potential buyers of these machines; making suspension adjustments for your weight and intended use makes a big difference on any bike, and tire choice can transform a machine. Don't let this review keep you from the bike you want. Example 1: I purchased a 2024 Ninja 650 in January. I'm 5'11, so I spent $200 for the Kaw accessory seat (30 mm higher than stock) and it opened up the legroom. Adjusted rear shock from 3 to 4 of 7(next stiffest) for my 210 lbs and handling was sharp. Next, the OEM Dunlop Roadsport 2 tires were extremely stiff, feeling way over-inflated, even though they weren't. Bike was bouncy/jittery. Swapped them for Michelin Power 5 tires and now I have the compliance and grip I need for good pace on backroads. Complete transformation! Example 2: I took delivery of a Daytona 660 last week of April. Rear shock preload came delivered at softest setting, 1 of 7. I bumped it to 3 and now I have the sharp handling I wanted; no complaints. The spring rates dont feel soft at all. I live in the States. It appears MCN does not take time to set up the bike for each rider weight, etc. Not condemning them for this, but reminding that owners SHOULD spend time adjusting suspension, tire pressures, etc. It can really have a huge effect on our enjoyment of the machine, and also explain some of the statements from reviews of this type.

How are you enjoying the 660
@GripEngineering7 ай бұрын
@@matthennig903 I've only ridden it twice, a 220 mile ride and another 221 miles (different routes!), but enjoying it thus far. As I am still running it in, I haven't enjoyed the motor at full revs or throttle yet, but the more I use of it the bigger my smile. The front brake may require a change of pads to achieve the linear relationship with lever pressure I enjoy on my non-ABS Ninja; right now, stopping power and bite increases substantially during the duration of brake apply while holding constant lever pressure. May seek a KTM pad to try on it. Absolutely love the ergos, wind protection, motor, and I like the display. Oh, the Sport mode does sharpen the throttle response compared to Road, so both are quite usable. The Daytona differs from the Trident and Tiger in that it has Sport mode, and a numerical tach as one of the selectable info trays. Seat is also very comfortable. In a nutshell, it appears to be a modern replacement of the do-anything sport bikes of the 90s.

Even though I love Suzuki and have had 4 of their bikes prior to this Aprilia. Most recently a GSX-S1000 and GSX-R1000. The Aprilia is composed, powerful, all day comfortable and when you park it, everyone wants to ask about it. After 30 years of riding motorbikes, i find the RS660 the best all round package currently available. I dont know what they are talking about that it is too exciting. Just whack it in commute mode and it is such a tame and easy machine to ride. Mode selection makes a massive difference to the feel of this bike, more so than any other bike I've tried before.

But as the drag race goes on further, the 3-cylinder engines will catch up with the 2-cilynders because they have torque from low to mid and a little bit high range. But through the finish line (assuming it is a longer distance race), the 4-cylinder engine will catch up with all 2 and 3 cylinder engines because a 4-cylinder engine is a high revving engine. Once it reaches the high range it goes really really fast. This is why you see honda cbr last at the start of the drag race, but I am sure it came up the first finisher. Perhaps zx4rr second.

The CBR650R isn’t a very rev happy i4, it’s nothing like a real super sport engine, it’s a stroked and massively detuned 600 which will take away from the more rev happy feel of a majorly overbore inline 4... It doesn’t rev higher than Triumph’s triple or make any more high end power over the triumph, it also lacks the mid range of the triumph… Honda power: 94 hp at 9300 rpm, rev limit of 12,000 rpm. That 12,000 is all just over rev though, it doesn’t make any more power. Triumph power: 94 hp at 11,250 rpm, rev limit of 12,500. Verdict: the triumph revs higher, and makes more mid range power. It’s the clear acceleration winner
@paulconnell13097 ай бұрын
@@sleeper.simulant7327 The place to look is where the engines make their torque. The GSX has the lowest peak torque at 6,800 rpm and 80% at 4,000. It feels like a bigger bike until you race. As you say, the CBR is flat low down and in the middle. The Triumph has a surprisingly flat torque curve and I guess will also be quick for everyday. I have not ridden the Daytona 660, but did own a Street Triple 765 which was smooth in low revs and quick everywhere. Same torque and HP as the GSX S750 four but way snappier on the roll on. With the GSX four you have to wait or change down, then it goes with a growl. My GSX 8S just pulled away. Easily as quick as a Street Triple under the speed limit and without revving the shed out of the bikes. Similar time to 100 kph.
@sleeper.simulant73277 ай бұрын
@@paulconnell1309 the original comment stated that because the CBR650R is an inline 4 it revs higher then all the triples and twins here and will be faster then them, which is simply not true. Cylinder count is but a single variable in the equation of how an engine performs. Bore:stroke ratio, camshaft lift and duration, weight of the materials used for the internals such as crankshaft, rods, pistons, etc… both the RS660 and Daytona 660 have less cylinders then the CBR, but require higher revs to hit their peak power figures, while both have more mid range punch. That equates to a more exciting engine feel, while still retaining that sporty, high revving feel. I currently ride a ‘22 Z900. I’ve actually looked hard at getting a GSX 8S or 8R for a second bike, they get stellar reviews and aren’t crazy expensive… and they seem like an awesome backroad ripper. All in all the CBR650R just seems so vanilla compared to its competitors. It’s not objectively a bad bike, it’s a Honda so it will be reliable and dependable. But the ZX4RR is a much more rev happy i4. Makes less power sure, but rips hard like a true super sport the higher you rev it, and begs to be rev’d out…

Good to see that you guys have put these up in the top 3. The Aprilia is a good deal more expensive in my country compared to the Daytona and 8R so that is a no go. Great round up and how the bikes feel to ride was articulated very very well!

Just tested the gsx8r and the zx4rr. The front end of the gsxr is delicious, the zx4rr a bit skittish, but I would get used to it. The zx is amazing fun which leaves you with a hyperactive maniacal grin afterwards, but at times you’re really left waiting for the revs to build and that bit of power at the end to come in. The gsx8r on the other hand has plenty of instant power and then hits the limiter, leaving you wanting for more. And it’s face and top yoke setup are nasty…

Wow, what a review. They all sound good! I'll add some dyno details because I have all these bikes' stock-ish dyno graphs overlayed for comparison because I was picking one out to buy. That GSX-8R blows the rest of them away up to 8k RPM in terms torque/how early it gets horsepower in the rev range (I just wish it had a bigger ass, it looks stubby.) The R7 hp curve is the same as the gixxer minus ~10. The RS 660 makes more power than both (but only after ~9k rpm) and revs higher, with the CBR650R dead even with it, but a bit less on the top end. The Daytona 660 is like a juiced up RS 660 and wins against them all in power. The ZX-4RR is on par with the power of the GSX-8R, but _only_ after 10k RPM. (It's basically a Ninja 400 until you get to 9-10k RPM.)

Interesting review. I guess the GSX8R isn't the best bike in any area, except torque maybe, but is just more well rounded overall. Still think the RS660 should probably have won but I get with this criteria why it didn't. Not surprised the GSX8R won tbh, it does do most things really well & doesn't cost the earth. It's comfortable, user friendly & fun at legal speeds & the torque makes it so easy to live with. I should know, I bought one & it completely contradicts it's spec sheet. However, I will say the bars look a bit daft, switchgear is somewhat cheap, the QS can be a bit agricultural on occassions & it runs out of puff after 8500rpm. Although none are significant issues imo.
@paulconnell13097 ай бұрын
The RS 660 is 25% more where I live and the dash is not as good. The GSX 8 series quick shifter improves when it has a few more kms and you know it. The GSX might run out of puff sooner, so just change up at 7,500 revs and the torque keeps you accelerating. It beats the RS660 to 115 kph and still makes 130kph+- in good enough time. Great roll on. Begs the question how fast do you want to ride. The GSX low down torque is more useful for every day riding. But both are excellent bikes. I picked the 8S over the Tuono
@ragerider62837 ай бұрын
@@paulconnell1309 Yep, agree with all that. The QS does improve with use & you learn it's ways pretty quickly. Compared to these other bikes, torque is noticabley stronger too. It pulls really well almost everywhere in every gear & much better than you expect. It feels like a bigger bike for sure. I used to have an SV1000S & it feels somewhat similar in midrange performance to a point. With regard to revs, I put the Akrapovic system on mine so my comment was more about the standard bike in comparison. The Akra makes a big difference & gives it a lot more at the top end & you can happily rev it out. There's also a noticable rush between 7.5-8k where peak torque is delivered & peak bhp is moved up the revs to 9.2k just before the redline. However, in top gear you'd be doing 140mph / 227kmh so like you said, how fast do you really need to do on the road?!?

Power and Handling would definitely make the Aprilia660 come in first place if they made a "on-track comparison" video. Really good job and takes on the bikes, but I don`t get your points against the RS660. I am 190 cm (a bit over 6´2), almost 40 years old with a screwed up neck and I can ride it all day long thanks to the cruise control. I commute on it to Zürich where there are a ton of 30 km/h zones and it feels fine at that speed (not as smooth as an inline 4 obviously). What I would point out as negatives are heat that builds up quickly in city traffic (it feels hotter than my Hypermotard) and in most of the world it is quite a bit more expensive than the other bikes. Other than that, I would agree that it is a toss up between the RS and the 8R, depending on your needs, design taste and budget.

The RS660 is in a class of it's own TBH.... the other ones don't compare at all without significant modding incl the R7. They're all heavier than the Aprilia and make less power and have far less features... the Aprilia's handling is in a different universe to all of them except the R7. The Suzuki is gr8... but to me I wish they'd release a lighter frame version w/premium suspension and brakes an RR if you will with that nice engine and I'd love it. Using the CBR IE compared to the Aprilia.... it's down on HP by 5 so it doesn't seem like much, but the added 50 pounds in weight + trash absolute budget suspension and brakes? You cannot push that bike half as hard as you can the RS.

Congrats Suzuki, well done. Good styling, excellent finish, great performance, comfortable, reliable. Would be tough choice between the Suzuki and the Triumph once they upgrade the suspension on it for a mid-cycle refresh. Aprilia build quality is currently worse than the Pinto was, weirdly most of the press bikes seem fine. Mine came with mismatched and loosening bolts, oil drips, overheating-as-standard, bulging and ill-fitting panels, paint drips covered by a sticker, and a headlight that partially worked. The fit and finish is the worst I've ever seen after a few months of ownership, I gave up on them. It's unfortunate because the engine is brilliant. The ownership experience would definitely have Aprilia last.

My thoughts exactly. Especially when they said at the beginning that the class is defined by Ninja 650 and CBR 650. An argument could be made for the European version of ZX-4RR, which is full 57 kW compared to 50 kW of a 650. It still wouldn´t fit in this class, but at least has the power. But bringing this 42 kW version with no torque is ridiculous. And as it´s a US and CAN only version, it seems even more cherry picked to fail.
