Middy Haircut Tips: How to Ask Your Stylist for a Middy

This is wonderful and much appreciated. I myself had a terrible experience when I brought in a diagram of the Middy cut to a hairdresser, she was completely baffled and had every other stylist in the salon come and examine in and none know what it was; even when I tried explaining it! The women cut it the way she thought best and it turned out terrible - I couldn't style it to my liking for 2 weeks! So thank you very much.

I love this video because it confirms that my hair dresser *does* give me a middy when I ask for it. Since I've never seen an unstyled middy so clearly before, this gives me something to compare my hair to. THANK YOU!

This is a great video. I am a hair stylist and I say that the explanation is a good one you could give your own hairdresser. If you aren't good at talking a cut over with your stylist, bring in a good photo of the cut you want (not styled) and explain to the stylist what exactly what you will want to achieve with your hair after the cut. Hearing your goals with a cut is so very helpful to us!

I had my hair cut like that, maybe a little bit shorter, when I was 16 years old and I hated it!!!! But I must say your friend is a good hairdresser who understands what many hairdressers don't and it looks really good on you. Can't wait to see all the surprises in styling this hair cut is going to bring us.

I can't believe it. I wish I had discovered this video sooner. I recently moved from Nashville back to Louisiana and am looking for a stylest that understands vintage cuts. That's not in downtown New Orleans . I would have gone to your friend, than when I moved I could have had a templet to show a new stylest. But, hey, I do have this video to show them and I thank you!!

Great cut. this helps a lot cuz i cut my own hair myself in the middy (almost exactally like that) and was a little concerned at how modern it looked. never fear, i almost never go without setting my hair. Thank you so much for this. I had to go to a different hairdresser 2 weeks ago as my regular one is on maternity leave. She didn't really get what I meant & I now have a bottom heavy bob that looks triangular. I will email her this video to give her an idea for next time.

Not sure about what cosmetology schools teach these days but when I went 18 years ago this was one of the very basic haircuts we learned. Right along with finger waves and pin curls.

@JoannaStockton Absolutely! You don't have to be authentic! THis is just one hair cut and if you cut a longer version of it, you'd still have layers. :) My favorite length is actually just past my shoulders...this length is not my best.

Could you also do this with hair that is longer? Or wouldn't that be authentic? I have very fine hair, but a lot of it, and wavy, so this length would make it stand out very wide unstyled. Rachael really knows what she is doing!

It looks great! I took it to my stylist and she was all "oh uh... this goes against everything we were taught in school, I'll see what I can do but it probably won't be exact" or something like that. Time for a new stylist. Though, what she did do came out all right, I don't think it's perfect.

Hairstyle looks great just like that, my husband would have a heart attack if I cut it that short. Is any of this info written down on a blog somewhere I am having a hard time hearing the terms use to describe this to a hairstylist. I have bad hearing.

Thanks a lot for this video! I really have had a lot of problems with my regular stylist, because she doesn't understand too much the diagram, although it is very understandable; I think she needs to watch your videos URGENTLY! I've tried 5 different hairstylists for this cut. The last one was like a mullet. It takes so long to grow them out and have the courage to try again. I know one thing, they dislike having diagrams put in front of them. Maybe this type of description will be more understandable to them.

I am currently keeping my hair long for my reenactments (this is a big reenactment year for war of 1812) so I'll be keeping my hair long but as soon as the year is over I'm cutting it off and this is probably what I'll do so thanks!

It's pretty easy usually to tell them that you want it cut 'the same length all over'. In other words, if you want the longest point to be six inches, then all of the hair would be six inches, including the layers at the front. You know? I wish my hairstylist came to my house! Yep, that looks like your basic layered cut, only much shorter than mine (I can't stand mine short!) For all those who go in for this cut, if you know your hair can't tolerate a razor (like mine), tell your stylist to use a scissors. Most stylists in my area use a razor to cut in layers, not scissors! If she/he doesn't know how to cut in layers with a scissors, find a stylist that can! That cut looks perfect on you, by the way!
