Hey! Nice channel of yours! Not really a lot of gear just...Roland XV3080/DR880/Minilogue XD/a Crave and a TR8S after vacation. But I run tapemachines and external gear. I have one or two jewels like a 1973 Echorec or a Tape Echo and such stuff. But nothing to fancy. Tape machines are Tascam MSR24/Otari MX5050-8 MK III and a Telefunken M15 for "Master" all over a Soundtracs Topaz 32 channel..guess I like throwing knobs! I am about to record my first album on the 8 track soon and I got hooked into Elektro stuff. I just find that MOTU makes solid stuff, maybe not High-end for some people but I am not so much driven by brands. Have a great evening!

Most excellent video! The best there is on this unit and topic! I am still weary it will work out as well for me, however. I haven't heard very good things about the MOTU, but it is tempting, in case it does work for me. I have been looking mainly into getting oldskool patchbays, like the Roland A-880, to avoid USB issues etc.

You know I've been using it for a couple of years, and haven't had any problems. There are some forum posts that report SysEx issues nonetheless. I know what you're saying about the non-USB type of devices. I can't say I'm not happy with this unit. It does everything I need and more.

I keep trying to figure out if this device is syncing tempo at my DAW. I have two keyboards an Alesis SR18 and a Boss RC-505 mk2 hooked up to it. I have figured out to use the Boss to master the drum machine, but I was under the impression that I would be able to run everything independent to Pro Tools and have the time code match. At any rate this video answered some burning questions. thanks for sharing.

Super helpful video. I’m having some troubles recording AND playing midi via my controller … I have 2 old samplers and a JV1080 going in and out via midi to a port on the 128. I can record into Cubase but I want to be able to audition sounds on my controller … is there a connection between the 128 and my midi controller which allows me to play sounds on my 3 devices whilst still allowing recording in the DAW?

By far the most in-depth review I've seen! Are you able to feed click audio into the pedal input to convert it to MTC? The older ones show it in the manual but the new manual and your video only shows 2 options for the pedal input. No option for click audio. I wasn't to sync it to the rimshot output of a drum machine to create arpeggio patterns similar to a lot of 70s and 80s bass lines. I contacted MOTU and their sales/support said yes and just pointed me to the link on their website, which I already read. 🤷🏻‍♂️

In The Mix Yeah the older manuals have that option in the drop down box. But the newest manual and as it appears the newer software, by watching your video, doesn't have that option under the pedal type in the pedal tab.

The Motu will show up in your DAW's I/O. You can simply connect each controller to a separate midi in and go from there. You can even change the routing using the matrix software.

I just purchased the Midi Express XT and I am having an issue with syncing it to my MPC 4000. The Tach and Lock lights illuminate indicating sync connection is established. However, my MPC 4000 does not start at bar 1 in song mode; it jumps to the end of the sequence when in song mode. Has anyone experience this issue? Is there something I am missing?

I have two of these devices and for some reason, I keep getting a delay everytime I record midi to pro tools. But when I change to 24fps it seems to sort of fix it. Does anyone know how the FPS affects the recording in PT?

Great tutorial! Is the MicroLite version capable of sending clock through sync in? I am using it to send midi sequences from Ableton to a synth but I also have a drummachine that I want to clock sync through its sync-in connector and use the drummachine sequencer, not Ableton's. You're welcome. Are you talking about midi or audio? This is strictly a midi interface.

@InTheMixReviews 1 - I recently learned about MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) which, in the world of midi keyboards controllers/groove boxes/sequencers, assign each note its own MIDI channels. This means that a MIDI channel will not be enough to control a VSTi like a piano anymore. How will this reflect in the world of midi interfaces? Will they have to be redesigned and the old ones will become useless when it comes to MPE? 2 - MIDI 2.0 begins to roll out. What does that mean for the current MIDI interfaces presented in this video?

OK, this is somewhat a huge topic on its own. There are many solutions. Of course you'll be able to send Midi using this to the 2nd computer, but to actually make two different DAWs work in sync on 2 different computer? You might want to look up gearslutz forum for this. There are some excellent posts on the subject.

This is strictly a midi interface and not an audio interface. You would be able to use them all.

PLEASE HELP ! I use my Keystation 88 to input notes into various synths and/or my DAW (Ableton) using the live Keys preset. The external Instrument channel I have set up, sees the notes and records them, as well as the audio. However When I try to play back the clip that I've just recorded in Ableton, it shows midi notes being sent however the Soundmodule/synth doesn't reproduce the sound. What am I doing wrong? If I arm the track and play notes I hear it...I see the midi notes appear in the clip...but once recorded they don't seem to be going back out to the module. Do I have to change the preset to no longer be live keys?

Ralph, I haven't used the interface in a while, and don't have access to it at the moment so can't comment for sure...but this is what I'm thinking. This is the default setting: All inputs and outputs are connected to the computer. You can't change that at all, so I don't think changing presets will solve this issue. Maybe this has something to do with Ableton?

Hey In The Mix, Is the MOTU ExpressXT capable of taking a Midi Beat Clock ("Realtime Clock" as MOTU calls it) signal and sync it to MTC? Your video is very helpful btw. Only video online that really explains a lot about these Midi interfaces.

I thought Midi Beat Clock gets transmitted through midi from the source regardless. I mean if XT didn't support midi beat clock, there would be no way of syncing two midi devices. What exactly you're trying to control ? As far as I know XT takes midi beat clock from the source and sends it to all outputs. That's the default setting I think. So your question is...can I take this midi clock and convert it to MTC through XT?

I want to be able to adjust tempo in the DAW on the fly while play live. I'm trying to get my DrumBrute to control Pro Tools because I like the tempo wheel. I've been successfully doing this on Ableton 10 Live but I want to use Pro Tools instead. Do you know how to slave Pro Tools to an external device's clock, via USB?

I don't know if PT supports midi beat clock in that capacity. In other words, I don't know if PT CAN be slaved to external Midi Beat Clock. I've never tried it myself. I don't think PT follows external midi beat clock, but I could be wrong.

Thank you. I've downloaded this ClockWorks software from Motu's website, so I'm sure you got the same software. If you're missing any functionalities, it's probably due to less input/outputs on your unit.

No, you CAN use it as a standalone without a computer. Though if you want to change the configuration , you will need to connect to a computer.

I still have digi 002 interface. It was built like a tank. It’s connected to a Windows xp computer that I turn on from time to time. But even my windows 10 workstation computer might soon stop supporting some of the key software and hardware.

Hello. I am currently using only plugins to write and playback tracks in my DAW. I have an older Kurzweil sound module that I would like to incorporate into my system but am confused on how I would connect it. It has MIDI I/O/THRU ports but no USB. If I used a MIDI controller keyboard, my audio interface AND a MIDI interface such as you are describing is there a way I would be able to record and playback MIDI tracks using the sounds from this module? Hi Don, you don't need a Midi patchbay for this. You have two options. If your Audio/Midi interface has regular 5 pin Midi output, you can connect that to the Midi input of your sound module. Or, you can get one of those Midi To USB converter cables (such as M-Audio UNO) and connect your sound module directly to the computer USB port. Either option, will take care of your Midi connection.

Appreciate you taking the time!....Yes, my audio interface has Midi I/O ports. I will connect the interface OUT to my modules IN. But I was thinking I would have to connect my midi keyboard controller's MIDI OUT to the sound module's MIDI UN in order to "play" the sound module. I guess maybe you are implying that I should connect my midi keyboard directly to the PC (via USB) and somehow use my DAW's routing options in order to record and playback instruments from the sound module? ok...so that's what i'm doing in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4XFpXqlbL6cfcU . I have connected a KETRON sound module to the computer using the M-Audio Uno cable. My midi controller is connected to the computer via the USB cable. The sound module is also connected to the same computer (different USB port) via the UNO cable. Then in my DAW I set the routing...so when I hit a key on the controller, the midi gets recorded in the midi track, but it also gets sent to the module. Even though the controller is not connected to the module directly, I'm still able to access it via the software. There are other ways...but this is how I did it. In this set up, the computer is connected to both the controller and module via 2 different USB ports. For connecting the midi to USB converter cable to , you just need to plug in the 5 pin Midi In end on the module. You don't have to connect the Midi Out/thru, because it's not needed. If anything, you don't want the midi data that gets sent to the module, to travel back into the DAW and cause midi feedback/loop.

You're very welcome! Funny you said that because another user asked me to do a test for something that involves rechannelizing and SysEx and I was able to reproduce that issue last night. For every thing else this unit has been rock solid except for this particular test. I'm going to contact Motu soon to see if they have something to say about this. I'll let you know for sure.

That's one of the main reasons. I've used this patchbay for backing up and it works fine....except when I tried to re-channel while sending SysEx. That didn't work as it was suppose to.

Unfortunately I won't be able to provide that type of support. I don't know about these days, but a few years ago Motu had a pretty good customer support. They even had a phone support. This is the exact question that brought me here. I've had a Micro Express for years but have just been using it to connect a couple of control surfaces to my PC. But now I want to get into the DAWless thing and after seeing Ricky Tinez talk about E-RM I began to wonder if my Micro Express could do the thing. Erm was built to provide rock solid sync on 4 outputs, you can add thru boxes to each if needed and onboard is a midi mapper to route incoming data to x channel so it can be used standalone. I was looking at a motu to give me more midi I/O but not sure how it’ll be compatible with my ERM and I’m sure it’s clock is not as solid as erm as erm uses audio. In short erm rules for sync and running a dAwless or daw set up but you’ll need a midi thru to get more than 4 I/O

Ok, so Midi Express XT CAN generate own clock and/or be slaved to an external clock. I'm pretty sure you can use Clockworks (the software that comes with the device) to configure the device, so you can send midi clock to any or every output. I don't know if this is possible with smaller Motu units, but I believe it is possible with the XT version. Just to be sure, send an e-mail to their official support to confirm before purchase.

The following interfaces are compatible with Clockworks (assuming there are compatible drivers for that interface in the OS you're running)... Digital Timepiece, MTP II, MTP AV, Express XT, Micro Express. The following interfaces are not compatible with Clockworks. If you have these interfaces you don't need to install clockworks on your computer... Fastlane, Pocket Express, Express 128, Micro Lite.

How do I (via hardware or software) map my keyboards and get a map set according to the setlist of a show for example, and with just a click or a button I can change the programs of the keyboards independently the manufacturer and the position (00-127, or 01-128) that the program is in. memory. Hi Daniel. Sounds like you need a midi controller set up that could remember your patch list...etc. What do you have in your signal chain as far as the midi devices...etc? Also have you looked at the FCB1010 video in my channel? That's a pretty good foot pedal to send PC change messages.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I just need program exchange messages. The schedules I make directly on each synthesizer. I need a software or hardware where I can map into the software via sysex, all the contents of the keyboards and in the same software can do a mapping as follows: Music 1 - key 1: program 004, bank A. Key 2 : program 120, bank D and so on. And every time I select this "music 1" the keyboards would switch programs automatically. I currently use 3 keyboards and a module.

My Kronos and PA4x each have a programmable "setlist". Selecting a setlist in keyboard A recalls the sounds for the song, and also sends a message to Keyboard B. There must be another way of doing this. Using the FCB1010 you can totally fire PC messages and more. It gives you 10 switches per bank. It has 10 banks so you can potentially have up to 100 foot switches at your disposal. This will take care of part of the problem. Then I'm thinking the FCB can transmit up to 5 PC messages per key stroke. That means you'll be able to send 5 PC messages to 5 different midi devices simultaneously. I think there are other software/Hardware solutions available ....such as: www.bome.com/products/miditranslator

In The Mix Hi, thank you for that tutorial it was very informative but I am so confused trying to get my equipment all synced up with the midi interface and I'm currently using Reaper as my daw and the M-Audio Axiom air as my controller and quite a few sound modules effects processors and external keyboards, now I'm not 100% sure when I downloaded my drivers for the Motu interface if everything is correct when I initially download in my drivers and the firmware there's a prompt that you mentioned to skip the wizard for some reason it wouldn't let me skip it so I finally got frustrated and went along with it I am seeing the signal from my Proteus 2000 with my motu interface but still no sound, and I didn't even try to do anything with my other external devices cuz I want to get one working to avoid more confusion any advice you give me would be great, thank you

Thank you Auriak. It's been a while, but if I remember correctly you could only rename the ports if you're a Mac user. At least that's how it was at the time of making the video. Not sure if there's been an update since...

I can't tell you that I have the answer for you. To be sure you might try Motu's costumer service....but my wild guess is that Logic can not be slaved to external midi beat clock. Is Logic going to be your master controller?

Hey, I just got one of these and was wondering if it’s possible to help me sort a few issues out 1. I have 3 synths plugged in. I have routed the midi in and out to the motu. In protools it reads and writes the midi however I hear a doubling effect on my drum machine. But not on playback, am I connecting it incorrectly? 2. How do I make protools the master BPM and have all my synths read the tempo of pro tools? I’ve set up all my synths to receive midi externally however it’s not recognizing the pro tools clock

1. I think that's because you have a midi feedback. Are you actually playing the drum machine or you're only sending midi from Pro tools to IT?

In The Mix thanks for the quick response! I have it set up with midi going in and midi going out and when I play the drum machine with my hands the midi track in pro tools 12 shows it’s receiving a signal however I hear a feedback like you mentioned or a doubling. What I believe is going on is that what’s being inputted through the midi device is being rerouted in real-time back into the device because when I deactivate the input on the midi channel the feedback stops. Any advice ? I am having a really hard time learning how to set up the clock so that pro tools is the master clock and my other devices are slaving to the pro tools clock as well Thanks Nick

Let's get the first problem fixed first. If you're not sending midi from Pro Tools to the drum machine, you don't need to connect the computer to the Midi In port. That would break that midi loop from happening. If you're going back and forth between the drum machine and computer for the drum performance, then you can have them both connected...but set the drum machine to 'Global off'. That way when you play the pads on your drum module, you won't get this doubling effect.

Thanks for this video! I hope you will help. I purchased one Midi express XT USB and One Midi Express XT 128 USB and my goal is to have 16 in's and 16 midi outs in stand alone mode. How would I make the connection? Can I plug midi 1 in & out to the other device? I realize I would have to use clockworks and a computer to configure. Very appreciated.

Hey man. Glad you found it useful. Honestly I never had a 2nd Motu device like yours, so I never got to try it out myself in that capacity. What I remember is that if you have more than 1 Motu device, they all show up in Clockworks under a dropdown menu...like Motu 1, Motu 2...or something that. It's been years since I've made any changes to my set up, but if I remember correctly, you use the software to configure, and then you can use that configuration in standalone mode if i'm not mistaken. This is what I'm thinking. If you're using a computer, obviously everything can be connected to the computer directly and they all show up in the software. Without a computer, I assume this would be a standard daisy chain set up. So you configure the mapping for each device, and then go from there. I've mainly used mine with a computer, but if I remember correctly the express line does not have networking features with special connectors. You either connect them to a computer with USB , or connect them to each other via a traditional 5 pin din connectors. By doing so, you're already losing 1 output and 1 input on each device. When I made this video, Motu had a phone support. With COVID and all, i'm not sure if that's changed. I'd be grateful if you share your findings with us here.

i bought the motu microlight. eventho the usb is conected , clockworks says you device is not detected to your compeuter. the micro light shows in my audio midi setup. so its conected. why clockworks acting like that then??

Worked it out. The 2 devices do NOT talk to each other. They are separate entities. So I ran a MIDI cable going Out of MXT #1 and In to MXT #2. Then i used Clockworks to route the signal to the equivalent Output port. It will be received on the Input port of MXT #2 and then i used Clockworks to route that.

I am using MacBook Air with Apogee symphony io mk2 16x16 interface without any option card installed. So it has only 16 analog i/o, spdif i/o and BNC i/o. No MIDI i/o and No ADAT i/o. On macbook air I have used usb to ethernet convertor and it works fine. I have checked it by networking with my pc. I am using windows pc with prism sound atlas interface. Atlas has 8 analog i/o, BNC i/o, spdif i/o and Midi i/o. As Symphony doesn't have midi i/o port. I believe that thing is being taken care by setting "audio midi set up" in Mac. But there is no such thing windows pc. I am doing tracking in windows pc using atlas. Once tracking is completed i transfer each track through analog out of atlas to Analog in on symphony. During this process I apply various processing like eq, comp etc. Doing so I am not finding any method of syncing between logic/mac and Atlas/windows. Due to this I have to drag and drop multiple tracks to match the beat. Can you pls suggest Is there any method/device to sync these two systems?

I have a Motu interface and I think the connectivity between them is not quite right. I'm using a USB from the Mac to power the 128, but I'm also using a USB to power the Motu interface. Yes sorry for being a butt. let me explain... I have a KX88 (keyboard controller)connected to midi in port 1, Prophet 6, Dx7, TG77, and Linn drum They are connected to XT > midi out. ports 2,3,4,5. I have my sequencer (protools 11) set up with the music already and when I choose to route the output of the midi track it send it to devise but I experience missing notes and hanging notes.
