Yea that attack puts him up a notch above the Elden Ring dragons. Makes the fight feel more dramatic. I think the Elden Ring dragons have a better general moveset, but it's not as dramatic. Fortissax is the most dramatic of the Elden Ring dragons given the arena and lore around him.

@@thadofalltrades yea elden ring dragons really pale in comparison. Dragon lord was cool, but not hard and rewarding like midir. More of just a damage sponge = boring made up for it in spectacle but could of been so much more. Midir felt like a true fight agaisn't a arch dragon. Like we were really fighting a being worthy of being called the "perfect lifeform". Even battered and broken put up such a fight. Elden ring has taken boss AI and movesets to the next level but it lost that "personality" bosses use to have. Like midir, gael, twin princes, demon prince, etc. Black blade was close, but not quite there. Same with godfrey and radagon. Also just putting this out there Malina sucked. She wasn't hard, Just BS. Im looking forward to hopefully them recovering this aspect of boss fights, Along with improved AI / Spectacle they are capable of now. They will make something that will NEVER be topped if they get it back.

I can understand why a lot of people prefer Placidusax over Midir: a lot of spectacle, cool moves, not too easy nor difficult Midir on the other hand seems like a insurmontable mountain: extremely difficult, a giant healthbar and on top of that the way the game suggests you to play is new for dark souls (more like the normal dragons in ER), but once you master the fight it becomes so damn fun

Nah I find Midir easier than placidusax (due to a fuck ton of experience and SL1 runs), I preferred Placidusax for a while due to recency bias, but nowadays I prefer him because he's just cooler; wish he was as mobile as Midir throughout the entire fight, as it stands phase 1 Placidusax is worse than Midir but phase 2 is just a slight bit better imo.

Midir is much easier because Placidusax has many moves where it's much harder to tell when you'll take damage so correct rolling is harder and there aren't many safe approaches while Midir's attacks are always consistent with dodge timings and even if you can't dodge, you can run away from basically all of his attacks because the indication of an attack always gives you time to run away.

Placi is the quite opposite of "but once you master the fight it becomes so damn fun" This was surely a NG+7 Midir and we saw 2 weapons and 1 spell and the fight was 4mins. @@abrahamrangel2326 yes you have good points, but I think they are overshadowed by objectively nice features. A) it makes sense that a dragon would fly most of the time (the 2 dragons from ds 1 and 3 have been recently crippled by the player, that is why it also makes sense that Midir and Khalameet use a lot of "regular" attacks) B) Sinh combines a standard MH dragon fight, with the use of elements (like quelaag w lava) to create poisonous parts of the arena that restric the players' movements. That alone is great. C) his hitboxes are slightly better than Midir and Khalameet's ones, but that is my impression (I did a no dmg of the 3 dragons, so it s not that I don't have any experience about their hitboxes). D) they should have added a cooler music for the fight, but that is what happens in ds 2 unfortunately, with some exceptions. Never fought Placidusax though, I am currently in Leyndell in ER.

Midir's head being overtly reminiscent of the Xenomorph Queen from _Aliens_ as well as the clear _Shin Godzilla_ homage at 1:41 is why he'll always be the best. @@dirt_dert_durt Well, I'll gladly present the evidence for you, then! (I've been researching the design evolution of Japanese adaptations of Western Fantasy for the last several years, so hopefully the following tl;dr makes for an interesting distillation of these two elements). The story in _Aliens_ is primarily about Ripley vs. the Queen, because they're both maternally protecting children against the other (James Cameron adapted his script for a different film called "Mother" to make _Aliens_ ). Even the original _Alien_ is about a lifeform that literally is born from the death of the human that darkness is implanted into and turns them into more of those monsters. That theme is why _Alien³_ has the Queen egg planted in Ripley's chest, and that whole film refers to the Xenomorph as "The Dragon" as well as why _Alien Resurrection_ focuses more on Ripley's horrible hybridization, in the same way that Miyazaki does with the relationships between Humans fusing themselves with or using Dragons throughout the _Souls_ series. The Caryll Rune "Beast's Embrace" in _Bloodborne_ is a depiction of a Facehugger, and the unused boss, "Great One Beast" utilizes the multiple teeth rows that Miyazaki started using with the Dragon God in _Demon's Souls_ along with Wolf features. That lupine element draws from the "Beast of Darkness" from _BERSERK_ like the "Watchdog of the Old Lords" boss as that's a central visual design theme for that inner darkness. Those fantasy-centric links to Dragons & Wolves are what we still see in the designs of the Ancient Dragons & Wolves of Radagon in _Elden Ring_ while the themes about parasitism and absorbing darkness within yourself that typically builds off of the _Alien_ series visual design are still present throughout (like the Albinaurics being artificial humans having white blood like the Synthetics). Suffice to say, those influences are VERY consistently utilized by Miyazaki throughout his games, but he's not alone as when _Aliens_ came out in 1986 it massively influenced the Japanese gaming industry with countless games having a Giger-like boss near the end as a final threat or secret boss, which is still used all over. It's that same darkness portrayed on a cosmic level, which is why _Bloodborne_ marries that symbolism to Lovecraftian elements. The underlying theme of absorbing darkness & pain into oneself causing a monstrous corruption that Miyazaki focuses on is why Midir matches the core theme of _Shin Godzilla._ In the scene that I mentioned this fight references at 1:41, the film's background music is a lament titled, "Who Will Know" which plays during the massive destruction of Tokyo. The lyrics convey the emotional darkness & existential pain that Godzilla experiences in his seemingly immortal existence, and why that is what escapes in the destruction of him just fighting to live. That theme was linked to the core of Japanese depiction of national suffering with Godzilla is now iconic. That matches to what Miyazaki is portraying with Midir and given that _Shin Godzilla_ was a critically acclaimed film in July 2016 when it released in Japan, and the "The Ringed City" DLC came out in March 2017, that's nearly impossible to overlook as directly tying those themes together, and being maintained with the Dragonlord in _Elden Ring_ with the attack called "Placidusax 's Ruin" following those same motions. So, those factors are why the fusion of the themes with the Xenomorph Queen from _Aliens_ and breath attack from _Shin Godzilla_ are central to the depiction of Darkeater Midir. The head design with hidden eyes and a huge crest is overtly to the silhouette of the Xenomorph Queen, especially with the spine-like protrusions. The conveyance of that inner pain being translated through the attack motions of Shin Godzilla, especially as that final attack is the one Godzilla makes in the film before being exhausted and falling to rest is how to translate those themes without the use of words. Midir was a descent of the Ancient Dragons tasked by the gods to eternal suffering as he's consuming and fighting back the darkness in exactly that type of inhuman pain that is a reflection of all the themes that Miyazaki's games are about, and how he's continued using and evolving those design motifs in his work. It's easy to see things that aren't there because just similarity of patterns doesn't mean that they are linked, as correlation ≠ causation. That's why I hope you'll appreciate that I wanted to emphasize that there is a veritable mountain of evidence that those references are things Miyazaki has used before & since, and my observation here was more than just speculative guesswork.

Firstly, using the Ringed Spear weapon art to dodge and then attack immediately was just beautiful 👌. Also, unless I'm mistaken, you are attempting a Radagon cosplay here. I need to fight the Elden Ring dragons again to be sure, but Midir is definitely one of the best bosses in Dark Souls 3 and is certainly worthy of his title as a true Everlasting Dragon whose race was wiped out by 3 of the 4 original Lords of Fire. Midir is one of the very few things in the Souls universe who has retained most of its glory whereas most other things and people - including the original Lords, have degraded or become just a shadow of their former glory.

@@ratman4910 I mean, that would have been cool, sure, but they didn't do that. The music and the spectacle of the fight were all phenomenal, but it still doesn't change that his fight is just chipping his tail, then running away when he kicks you out.and there is nothing you can do about it ,you Just go out of the hitbox with a sprint for 5 sec, then come back and resume the chipping. When he turns around, you just circle him and go back to your tail chipping like nothing happened. Phase 2 is more of the same, you will just have to dodge until he is done with his teleportation and settles down for you to find his tail. There is also baiting him to the end of the arena in his last landing so you can get behind him and avoid his bs laser beam. If you count that, Bayle on the other hand is more dynamic. You face him head-on with more immersive, varied move sets with different dodges and timings to figure out, and super optimal and satisfying punishes before, during, and after his attacks. Then the fight itself, a mechanically excellent boss fight. Chef's kiss. I am truly glad Miyazaki and Fromsoft exist. They outdid themselves. Fire breath, claw smash, stomp, flying and shooting fire to the side, chomp etc. It was awesome for 2016, but in 2022 the dragon fights have evolved in the series. Seeing dragons wielding red lightning as a weapon is unmatched.

Bayle is like the improved version of this, he also has more movesets compared to Midir. Midir is just more predictable. The one who still likes Midir is either sufferring from nostalgia bias or didnt fight Bayle solo. They litterally fights the same way, which is head bonking.

Overall I enjoy Bayle more, but I'm a sucker for the somber melancholy that Midir's fight has. They are 2 sides of the same coin, both epic battles against a powerful dragon. Bayle being the Intense spectacle of a fight against a being of pure dread and hatred, while with Midir it is a fight to finally put a valiant but corrupted dragon to rest for his own sake. Also I think Igon elevates the fight with Bayle and is the reason I prefer it to overall compared to Midir, even if I think I like Midir's movements and some of his moves more. Bayle also has the advantage of being a newer designed fight from a much newer game since they are nearly 8 years apart. Regardless, both of them (and Kalameet and Sinh) are how dragon fights should be done.

Pretty sure you are the one who didnt fight solo if you think bayle is better. Bayle is only better visually, midir is better mechanically. Bayle has a worse camera, a smaller arena, his scream attack is trash and doesnt have as good a flow as midirs fight does. Just cause a fight looks more cinematic doesnt make it better.

Bayle’s regular attacks and combos are better. But some of his attacks are way too annoying because of how buggy his fight is (fire breath deflection). But they do not fight the same at all. Bayle’s fight is wrathful, like he’s extremely angry. Hell, he literally stumbles on the tail swipe forgetting that he is missing his leg. Midir feels like an animal clawing to survive, the way he thrashes around everywhere. Moveset is mixed. I’d say Bayle’s moveset is more complex but he suffers from his fire breath attacks lacking consistency due to projectile deflection. Midir is a lot more predictable, yes, but at least it’s consistent. Consistency is very important in these games. Visuals I’d say are tied. They just have different themes. Midir is dark and gloomy whereas Bayle is like rage with all the red everywhere. Difficulty, probably Midir. You can make overpowered builds in Elden Ring. There is no way you are ever getting strong enough to kill Midir in just a couple hits. With Bayle, it’s actually not that hard. Although I did fight both of them with low damage. So in that case, I would say Bayle is harder. But your average isn’t psychotic enough to do low damage runs.

@@AtomicZamurai i agree. Bayle is more eye candy than Midir. 50 suns into the eye. His design is pretty cool. we ride up to the top past dozens of dragons Bayle has killed and we reach his broken body. Igon is cool. Bayles theme is a banger. as an actual boss fight that you have to engage in, his is shockingly bad. horrible telegraphing. His camera abuse is obnoxious. everything he does covers 90% of your screen with effects. people like the things surrounding bayle. even you make it a point. 'BAYLE AND IGON'. it sucks fighting Bayle. Midir is a boss with infinitely better construction in terms of move set, telegraphing, hit boxs. He doesnt need 50 suns and a great npc to not suck balls.

@@-Azure.EXE- When people say bayle and igon it was just to show how good fromsoft got to do dragon fights. Bayle alone is better because igon gives no value at all for the combact. Maybe you were under a cave but Midir camera is so awful that it literally unlocks the character randomly. Its like we wwent back to ds1 all over again. The camera is so bad people literally fight him unlocked because he's just too big. Midir is also more frustrating because you either run away to avoid his fire breath or run towards him to attack and i had the same problem with elden beast. While bayle will always close up to you and never runs away too long like midr. Plus bayle healthpool is more manageable in a game like elden ring while midir takes too much time to reduce his health bar. Bayle with or without igon is better because the frustration factor is less even tho all the things happening int the fight can be overwhelming visually and still be cool. Bayle is better and its not even close

I always thought the dragon fights in Elden Ring were kind of annoying, Placidusax was the only one I enjoyed. Then I played DS3 and realized it was Elden Ring that made dragon fights really annoying. Trying to stay in front of dragon to get meaty hits to the head in clearly telegraphed openings = fun. Blindly rolling around feet and tail to sneak hits in while trying to dodge annoying huge AOE fire breath and stomps = not as fun. They brought it back with Bayle in shadow of the erdtree, absolute banger fight, but they also added like 10 annoying ass ghostflame dragons and that trash ass Senessax fight.
