Midjourney Image Editing is Finally here - Vary Region Tutorial

Midjourney just introduced one of the most anticipate updates called vary region.
This allows you to select any portion of any image you create with Midjourney and use a text prompt to change it.
Previous to this update, we had to do this with Photoshop. But now, you can do it all inside of Midjourney.
First, create an image inside of Midjourney. If you are new to Midjourney, watch my beginner’s guide to Midjourney first.

Next, choose one of the options and upres it by clicking on the U option.
Once you have a single image, you’ll see an option called vary region. This is called in-painting on other AI apps that do similar image editing.
Vary Region will open a new editing menu. Here, you a use a rectangular selection tool or lasso selection tool to make a selection.
Then, type in a new prompt or alter your existing prompt and press the arrow key to generate the new image.

I have a problem. When I select "Vary (region)", the promt text bar that should appear in the bottom part isn't there. I already updated my discord client both on PC and phone, but it doesn't appear. Simply the "submit" arrow... ► SOLVED ◄ - I had to activate the "Remix Mode" in /settings.

Hey, I have a picture with 5 kitten and I want to add another one. I selected a larger area next to one of the kitten and typed: add a black kitten. Nothing happened. The same problem with "remove" or just blank space. Why does it not work for me?

Been playing with this feature for a few hours and cannot replicate your results on a regular basis. mostly ignores what I prompt. I've tried multiple variations of adding new info into the prompts. Curious if photoshop might be worth jumping to for that type of stuff

You maybe need to turn on remix mode. Type /prefer remix and enter twice and then it will be on

I don't believe that Midjourney will allow this yet, but do you know of any AI photo program that will allow you to upload your own photo and once the photo is in the ai system, you can utilize a 'vary region' type tool on your own, analog, non ai created photo? This is what I've been searching for, but can't seem to find as of yet. Generative fill in Photoshop is great for simple fixes of my own photography, but it does not work well when attempting to augment reality.

When I use the vary feature it generates what I want, however it doesn't keep the same art style. For an example the background may be very painterly, yet when I generate something new with the original generated painterly image, say a man, the man comes out looking very realistic and doesn't not share the same shadowing/shading, color tones and not looking painterly... How can I fix this?

Hello, I have watched this video a few times and getting a little bit more each time. Question: I am trying to use the same "image/person" each time. I am trying to find how to change the background, position, etc. for marketing. I have been able to do some edits but, just taking so long. Is there a quicker, easier way? I did remove the background from Canva and trying that route but, not always working that way either.

Thanks, this looks like a great tool! I signed up for your Skill Leap program which looks just awesome. I watched the video there which goes into even more detail and describes how to turn on Remix mode and more. I did all that, but after I have Remix mode On, have the upscale image, and use the rectangle or lasso to select an area .... when I click anywhere on the prompt line, the whole Vary (Region) edit window goes away and I am just back in the Discord feed. Am I missing something? Is there something else I am supposed to do to make this work???

Thanks. But when I go to Community a What's on your mind msg comes up and there is a box to enter info... but the blue Add Post does not light up and I cannot actually add the post. So not sure what I am doing wrong there ... not my day so far ....:-( @@Howfinity

ok let me see what's going on there. But I think I see the Midjourney issue. When you click vary region, first make a selection, then type in a prompt, then press the arrow next to the prompt box that says submit job. If you click away, it goes back to discord.

Great tool, pity you can't reverse the selected area though, hopefully MJ might add that at some point.

You can. There is an undo button in the upper left.

@@EmperorCaligula_EC I saw that, I meant inverse the selection. For example, if you draw a circle in centre but then want to invert the selection so that it selects the frame instead. I was trying to change the background of a portrait but leave the face intact. I’m sure there must be way to do it.
