I grew up in this town born in Blythe but raised in Midland from 1952 until 1963. It was a great place to grow up. No crime that I remember and no prejudice, all us kids played together and the color of our skin was never a issue. It took every boy in town to play a baseball game. Great memories.

My Dad worked there in the mid 50s when I was born in Blythe and we lived in Midland till I was 16 months old. They just had a Midland reunion on Saturday October 26th for employees and families of Midland We were there. They have it every 2 years. There were probably about 100 people there.

Google maps shows quite a few squatters out there. Some look very established. The train tracks used to run from Rice Junction to Blythe and a little town west of Blythe.

I worked for Cal-Zona, a mobile welding service, in the late 80's. We did a lot of work on the gypsum mine. The material was very abrasive on the equipment they ran.

Grew up there as a teen in the 80s & mapped the entire mine system of the biggest mine. Loved going there till the gov blew up the cave entrance & destroyed the roads getting up to it. Super dangerous but a piece of history.

My dad and I use check out old mining towns in norcal when was young. Loved it. Before google, you just drove old roads and hiked old trails. Found so many places. That was fifty years ago I'm sure all decayed to dust now.

The old railroad beds, where tracks and ties have been removed, can be a very interesting ride. It's a little dangerous because nature reclaims quickly and shouldn't be done alone or unprepared. But it's also exciting! Some guys travel the abandoned tracks that are still in place with homemade go-carts and get to go to otherwise inaccessible places where no one else does!

Hey Russ, the snowbird couple that have set up the museum on their spread are very informative and really good people, it's worth a visit. Yes the railroad ran through Midland that's the problem, It was the only way they could get water by train but it was just so costly and unreliable to support the mine and it's residents. There's plenty gypsum everywhere out on the mountains, roads and gully's. Too bad it's just so far out. The gypsum mined was used to make plaster.

That dirt road north to HWY 62 from Midland is a very decent road most of the time. I towed travel trailer on it at speeds around 30 mph with no issues. Of course one big rain storm could have changed it for the worst, but when I traveled, it seem well maintained 9 months ago.

Today, Memorial Day Wknd 2021, I drove it in an old honda crv with awd. About four pretty sandy places, one I'm glad I made through without getting bogged. Was the only person on the road. Nice. Won't take it again in my vehicle til I hear they've added more rock.

Too bad there weren't any water sources out in Midland area. Internet explains that water was sent by rails from Blythe. Still, it looks like you could drill maybe a mile or so below and find some kind of water source (ha ha). Nice video, as usual. Thanks.

Speaking of winds in the desert, I'm surprised about the relative lack of utility wind turbines for power generation, especially considering the decling power generation from Lake Mead and Lake Powell, not to mention future power generation. A wind turbine begins generating power at ~10 MPH, with ideal wind speed of 30 MPH and automatic shut-down at ~55 MPH winds. Under ideal conditions, the average turbine generates ~2-3 MW, enough to power ~1,500 homes. In a region starving for electric power, wind turbines and solar are obvious solutions, especially considering abundant sunshine and dependable winds in the desert SW. What about water? That's a totally different challenge growing by the day, no by the hour. There are solutions here too, but we must be prepared and willing to make difficult top-down economic decisions that humans can live with.

Hi Russ. I was born in 1962 and lived with my family in Midland until I was 3 years old. I still remember parts of it. Nevertheless, my dad worked for USG for several years in midland as a purchasing agent, then the Co. moved us to Orange county Ca. where he continued to work for USG in LA county. I am now 58, and my brother who went to kindergarten in midland is now 60. My mom, brother and I all live now in Missouri. Now then as far as what you are looking at in the video with the big slabs of concrete was the USG Plant. On google earth my mother pointed out where our house was located. We can still see the slab where the house stood. They moved all the houses which were all very small, to another location. Yes there were train tracks there where the water was haled in daily. I can remember my dad having a dune buggy , and I also remember sitting on top of one of those hills with my parents, and watching the army doing maneuvers north in the desert.
