Midland MXT115 GMRS Radio Part 2: Features and Functions. How Does This Compact Radio Stack Up?

I've been playing with the GMRS radios in my collection these last few months and I'm ready to roll out some updates. First up is an in depth look at the 115. It's a compact radio that puts out 15watts. It appears to be well built and has all the features you'd want on a modern radio.

I just received my FCC GMRS license. I actually bought the MXT275, but it's pretty much the same radio as the MXT115. I've used CB for the 30+ years in my car, so I'm not replacing it, but adding to my mobile communications. That seems to be a misconception with some videos and comments. I'm sure most people are using both CB(RS) and GMRS (and other radio services) together. From what I've been gathering in other videos and websites, in hilly/mountain areas it may be better with a 3db gain antenna than 6db. Looking forward to the distance test. Love your videos. They are great and very informative.

Good morning Erik and the rest of the Farm Family !! Does anyone have repeaters in town set up yet or they just talking on simplex ? I recently renewed my GMRS license , I’d like to start getting familiar with the traffic around here and start listening and talking

The short delay in the menu is an annoyance, but I'd think a very minor one since these settings are typically "set 'em and forget 'em" ones. Once you have it the way you want it, I wouldn't think you'd need to go back to the menu very often at all.

It would be a fatal flaw for me. Midland need to fix that problem. I had a 2 meter radio like that one time. I finally gave up and tossed it, and after a lot of research found one that stayed put for as long as you wanted it to.

I can't think of a reason to buy a GMRS radio. I looked it up, and even in Texas there's maybe 2 repeaters active. Far worse and useless than ham radio, frs, murs, and cb combined. Hell there's activity on frs radios around here.

Nice looking radio, but I like using surplus part 90 radios. I realize that is technicial a violation of FCC R&R, but prior to 1995, that's what people used on GMRS. Besides the majrity of repeaters out there are FCC part 90 euipment. I like using my CONNECT SYSTEMS CS 800 and 800D 2 great mobile for DMR and just as well for GMRS.

Hi could you make a video about how to ground a home base cb antenna for protection from lightning strikes? I have one on the roof of a building behind my garage and another beside my house about 40 ft tall.

Thanks for the review, I've been looking at all of the GMRS offerings but haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. Unfortunately in my area (NH) there aren't many repeaters and when I channel scan with the hand held I don't pick up much other than recently some kids must have got walkies for Christmas. For some odd reason I feel gipped that they don't add the FRS (8-14) channels and just kick down the wattage... Yeah I know it's a silly thing. Looking forward to the range review with the 6db antenna.

I have one and not impressed. I bought the Hardened Power Systems Operator 115 portable go kit in a 30 caliber ammo can for it. I have a N9TAX Slim Jim antenna for it along with a KB9VBR j-pole antenna for my Polaris Ranger. I pet about 2 miles to a hand held 5 watt GMRS radio. I have videos on all of this. The microphone went bad on this unit. The PTT button is garbage on it and sticks on. There isn't a definite click to it. I want to get the Wouxun KG-1000G mobile radio. A bit pricey but definitely a quality radio for GMRS.

I woulda gone with the Wouxan 1000G for my wife's Forester but ended up buying a Midland MST275, which is the same radio as the MXT115 but with all the controls on the mic. Need that as I have no real estate in the cabin (even for a removable head unit) and wanna hide the radio under the seat.

AWESOME !! I have my GMRS license, and use it , i have a GMRS radio in my dad's house, and 2 here.. Dad lives 300 meters down the dirt road from me... he lives alone and we use these radios alot .. and i have the local vol fire department and police loaded on mine.. so i could call for help " declaring an emergency -as aloud via FCC " and my town is soo small, i have spoken with them about it.. GMRS is a really great radio systems.. your video is kick butt!! thank you !! all my local vets up here are on them..and we got quite a few repeaters up and running.. Thanx for sharing this video !!! .. omg.. u and the menu button ..hahaha that was funny
