First Month with Pro 3: King of Monosynths?

Dude, I have been using the crap out of the same 4 track step sequencer on my Mopho Keyboard ever since 2010! It doesn't have the physical 16 step control buttons, but overall it's the exact same thing. I produced lots of crazy moving sounds on it, especially lively basslines. People ask me 'how did you make that sound'. In a way, Dave Smith did, I simply admit I'm using one of his genius inventions. A++. Thank you Dave!

Hint, it can 303 like no 303 ever could! It has slide+rest, and you can accent ANY (!) parameter you want. It's crazy cool. Put some good effects on it (Mopho has no effects, but that's cool, the 303 doesn''t) and there you go. Way better than using a crappy Nexus preset. 🙂

Thank you for making this and finally discovering what I've already known for quite some time. I think my passion for this synth will come off in my response. This mono synth covers more sonic ground than most 8 voice polys (I love polys so no hate, just giving the Pro3 the praise it so rightly deserves).. and it does so in a way that's authentically vintage and groundbreakingly modern.. all, at the same time. As you said, the SEQUENCER alone IS worth the price of admission (and more IMO). For a second, let's set aside the fact that you have two beefy, silky smooth, beautiful sounding Sequential Analog oscillators at your disposal. Out of box, EACH patch/preset (of which I believe there are 512 total) comes with 2-3 additional sequences/phrases. If you do the math, only using HALF the available memory alloted to Factory/User presets, this thing comes fresh out of Sequential box with 1300-1500 Sequences, and needless to say? DSI also blessed us with a SEQUENCER LOCK button. On top of all of that, having the ability to deploy a near GOD TIER sequencer in a DAW to all your VSTs, is enough to keep your creative juices flowing like the Colorado River that you may eventually get around to finding out that this thing actually sounds AMAZING. Who does analog better than Sequential? (short list, in any case). So you have at your disposal two extremely capable analog Sequential Oscillators. And as orgasmic as those are, soncially... the flexibility that the third digial wavetable oscillator adds makes you feel like that aren't any sounds you can't produce on this thing. It can Blade Runner. It can Sarah Connor/Ill be back. It can Harold Faltermeyer/Running Man. It can even Billie Jean in paraphonic mode. You'll get a rush when you find out it can Tom Sawyer, and other various Oberheimic Meaneuvers. It stays out of both the closet and the clavinet. It can even Trent Reznor, Kraftwerk and covers all of Depeche's Orgasmic Modes (both early and later albums). It can play house and all of Reeses pieces. It can Tony Di Bart and Jam with all the Spoons. It can Maxi Preist, and speaking of.. it's pretty good at PADs, too. 😂 I could go on and on. In short, it's the perfect marriage of vintage and modern. It's like a fantasy world that shouldn't be accessible.. but, it is. I have about 125 other software VSTs and every time I sit down to create, I often don't make it into the DAW because I'm just HAVING FUN with my Pro3.

Thanks for this video.I am an amateur and after a lifetime of work I finally have free time. I have always dreamed of getting to know the world of synts and among the first ones I took there is the pro3. At first I was only using presets, but after months of effort I'm learning to understand and appreciate it a lot. It's a great instrument. Paraphonic mode is my favorite thing, but mono sounds are great too. I left the sequencer for last, but this video of yours gives me the desire to learn more about it. After pro3 I also took take 5 which is just as satisfying but much easier to use. I am also waiting for your video because there are many aspects that I have not yet explored. The PRO3 is somewhat underrated. I’m not a big fan of the presets, some of them are awful but each time I make my own sounds, I always end up with something I really like. What I really like about this synth is that you can make old school PRO 1 or Mini Moog style sounds or really modern sounds with crazy modulations.

Agree and for me the presets are for 99% showcase presets, but not usable. Still I can create every sound that I wish for and why I bought this synth. The Pro 3 is just like it's filters, it can sound like a P6, Moog and Ob6 and I love it for that.

Those are definitely some of the big highlights of the Pro 3... in your proper long-term review I would get into the possibilities having each sequencer modulation track having it's own length, so that an arpeggio can be literally ever-changing.

I've had my Pro 3 since March 2020 and I agree that it's a brilliantly designed synth. For me one of the best features of the sequencer (along with the many that you point out!) is that the length of each individual track can be anything up to 64 steps, so you can have patches where the sequenced modulations are constantly interacting with each other in different ways. Fantastic!

I feel like I have to comment on this synth after using it more serious in music creation since I wrote the comment last time. I don't know how true this is but my gut feeling says this synth is not regarded as it should have been at least when following the selling rank from Thomann in europe perhaps it's more sold in US. However this synth is the swiss army knife of a mono. When there are sounds I need that would require tons of modulation to create that do not need to be poly of corse then pro 3 always delivers and way more. It's a dream mono for the ones that can handle gain stage and has decent or more understanding on how synths works. A dream machine for the ones with alot of fantasy that wants to try out crazy modulation or simply need to create a very specific mono sound / paraphonic also. It turned out that my pro 2 is way less used now but I like to pick that machine up for some special digital hybrid sounds.

As an owner of Pro3 and Pro2 I would like to point out that Pro2 was without any question the most misunderstood -DCO- digital oscillator - VCF mono-monster ever created. Love them both but the Pro2 will always be my favourite :) *EDIT: learn from my mistake that there is a difference between DCO and digital oscillators*

Ever since I started getting into synths I’ve had to try and make myself want a mono synth. Something about having no polyphony feels really limiting to me. Even the wonderful Moog sound, if I could ever afford one I think I’d still be staring at the add to cart button thinking, one note at a time. You can only play one note at a time man. I know that’s massively down to my ability hahaha! And that fundamentally this is the same (although I did spot a paraphonic comment when coming to write this) but that sequencer and workflow completely neutralises all and every negative thoughts I once had towards monosynths. Just, wow man! Well done sir! You have converted me! Haha! Credit where it’s due, Dave and the team did an ok job as well. Look forward to your long term review! I’m off to put one of my kidneys on the dark web.

Right. Many sounds off the ability to play 3 notes simultaneously. Also arpeggiation for all purposes is like playing chords, even though it’s mono, just played really fast in its own time space,next to each other. Also, keep in mind that there are some sounds you can only really get with a mono synth. Even the best polys can’t do the robustness of certain mono sounds. The best monos for the money out there iMO, are pro 3, and subsequent 37.

@@judethree4405 ​ you’re so right and I completely agree. Even since making this comment and thinking about the Pro 3 it’s made me think more about my feelings on monosynths. I’m just starting to break away from the DAW and obviously going straight to the premo expensive synths, it feels like it’s a lot to drop on a mono haha! I know that doesn’t make logical sense though. And thinking about every track I’ve ever recorded, how often am I jamming out chords with the bass line?! You’re absolutely right about sequencing. The ease of use of this sequencer (and the whole synth) along with the endless modulation opportunities that are again so easy to perform really appealed to me. And as you say, you just can’t replicate the sound of a mono synth! Good recommendations. I think this one has stolen my heart though! Haha!

Some weeks ago I had to decide for some new gear. When Dave Smith passed away I was pretty sure to get a synth based on the spirit of Dave Smith. The Pro 3 was, especially regarding the great sequencer, on my top list. But then ... an offer for a Novation Summit was too attractive and so a Summit is now on my desk (to my opinion one of the best poly-synths ever). Maybe the Moog Subsequent 37 is a candidate for being replaced by a Pro 3 (but unfortunately you should never sell a "Moog" 😉).

NOO!! I made that mistake. Sold my sub37 a few years back and nothing could fill the void, so I ended up buying it again last year and it’s going with me to the grave haha. The Pro 3 is an excellent companion to the sub37, and routing the audio from sub37 into the Pro3 for the Fx is a thing of beauty! Let me know how it turns out, and congrats on the Summit!

I do think the PRO3 is the best standalone monosynth ever, as great as the mini Moog, voyager, and matrix brute is. But I think the PRO2 is the better overall product. Two pressure and position sensitive touch-strips, and the flexible routing filter section give it the edge, when used in conjunction with external gear, say, a VCO monosynth or module, and a good reverb pedal. The PRO3 is like an even cooler Moog sub37. THe PRO2 is like a specialized, normalized eurorack modular setup in a box, with patch memory.

I have pro-3, subsequent-37, rev2, prophet-6 and ob-6. And I wrote it in order I get it. So now, when I have all this I wonder - why I need pro-3? I have synths which have prophet filter (rev2 and prophet-6), ladder filter (subsequent 37) and sem filter (ob-6). But I have some sounds, wich I made on my pro-3 wich I cannot recreate on any of those synths (and I’m not talking about wavetable osc - I’m talking about few simple saws). There is something unique in sound of pro-3. Maybe this is mix of its VCOs and filters, I dint know, but Bass leads are more creamier on this synth… Anyway, huge modmatrix, paraphony, 3 filters, amazing sequencer make it unique. Buy the way, sem filter on ob-6 and on pro-3 are different. Something about high frequency’s. On pro-3 they are more presented, so I cannot create exact sound as on ob-6. Ob-6sem filter I like much more…but pro-3 sem is great too. So every synth is special. Every synth is unique. If u like how it sounds - don’t look anything better - just use it. Cheers)

Ouff xD I am somewhat fed up with not knowing where to start with all this. I've had my eyes on the Pro 3 for a long time now as a first bigger/larger/expensive synth but there's so much other stuff too and it's damn near impossible to decide unless you yourself can get your hands on a thing and try out the workflow over the course of a couple weeks or so. How does one decide? Are you just buying stuff and returning/selling it if it's not the thing you were looking for?

I love my Pro 3 - however I got it with the view of taking the place of all my other Monosynths. That has not been successful so far. It’s just far too beefy when trying to recreate my go to sounds I usually use on the SH-101 / MonoPoly and even PRO ONE.

MatrixBrute, is less beefy. It is thinner, which has unfortunately led people to think it's not good enough. But if you have 2-4 synths all blowing at the same time, you are not going to want that big sound that you like when auditioning patches. MatrixBrute has a Steiner filter and huge control. That might slide in your rig to complement the Pro 3.

Sequencer is a must for my synths! :) Though not a "sequencer" they just do to place a check mark. I always looking a "programmable ARP". Synth should not not be a replacement to external sequencer, those do their job. Instead, I would expect programming a sequence and press a chord for synth to follow. That will be music playing vs programming. Something what Sonic Academy has in their ANA2 arp/sequencer. I don't think any synth will do it "right" ever. Instead keep making fancy and "very powerful" variants, but not designed for a playable instrument. There is no perfect Arp/Seq even in controllers. Pro3 is the closest ... but I'll keep learning Sub37 blind more ARP/Seq. It would be great is they Moog/PB add mouse programming for a sequence into their VST. No VST - no deal for DSI (not not paying extra to 3rd party. Arturia PB multi-instantiated VST is the new must) Display of current knob state is a new must, but I talk too much already :)

Small tip: If you really want to experience the proper sound of the Pro 3. Leave the FX off. You engage a DA/AD taking away part of its sound/vibe. This is the important part to me regarding the Pro 3. The Pro 3 remains open and fresh without the FX. (you can add send/return FX and compare it for yourself) It truly is a wonderful instrument. One of the best monophonic synthesizers out there!

There are a few issues people should be aware of. The Pro 3 has 2 midi outs but programming the sequencer to control other gear is a pain in the butt. It's fine for maybe a drum machine and simple 4 on the floor type rhythms, but if you want to do chords, like for example to control Sequential's Take 5, you have to go in and use the knobs to program each individual note on a separate track. So if you want the Take 5 to play a 5 note chord with the sequencer it'll take 5 tracks and at least like 10 minutes to program it in. Basically, it can control 2 pieces of gear but it's not fun at all and takes forever, not practical for a live improv performance. I hope they change that. I was hoping that Sequential's Pro 3 and Take 5 would have better synergy. Also, what is the point of having an audio in if you have to constantly be holding down a key to hear the sound? I was hoping to be able to have another instrument run through the sequenced Pro 3 effects and have the pro 3 play a bass line at the same time, it can kinda sorta do that but not in a way that sounds good. Might work for drones, but that's about it.

Had one and sold it to fund the Iridium. Great layout and loved the mod matrix, it just wasn’t for me. I has a Pro 1 years ago in my 20s but it kept breaking down. Ended up taking it into the college I was doing Music Technology at as they had one that kept breaking down as well. When I left the course I never went back for it, just left it there all broken and unloved. Always regret that.

@@mikel5163 thanks a lot! I don’t really know, I sometimes found it a bit harsh sounding, didn’t like the reverb on it (spoilt with the Peak reverb I suppose) and a few months after I bought it the Iridium was released and I wished I had waited on that. I always watch any new videos on it just to see if I made the right decision and I don’t regret it. The only synth I ever regret selling was my JD800, bought a Korg Prophecy. Maybe that has just left me mentally scarred when it comes to buying expensive monophonic synths (I know it’s paraphonic) Oh another thing that irked me was that the Sequential logo was only on the back and not the front like the more expensive model. Love that logo!

Yea, very capable and amazing mod matrix uex. But the lcd/knob/button experience is, bad. Plus stiff knobs. Still I’m keeping mine!
