So much intelligence in this film. Schlesinger's night dream sequences are brilliant, characters are completely three dimensional, the cinematography is inspired.... Even the film stock is gorgeous. Voight and Hoffman are so good they never leave you. Even now, Voight has a kid's smile. He can't smile in a lot of his later roles as tough guys, or it all falls apart.

BTW John was such a gem as a person. Witty and insightful. It was a joy to interview him for this. Sadly, this documentary is not available anymore. Not sure if UA even knows they have it.

Without doubt, my all-time favorite movie. Very heavy drama but lightened up masterfully with comedy throughout. Very interesting to get an ‘inside look’ into Warhol’s zany ‘Superstars’ and just imagine what it must have been like to be around all that weirdness at that time. Would love to see the documentary.

@New Life New Rules These days, TCM usually plays it once per year, uncut version. Probably others too. I like to watch it about that much these days. For me, it was/is a very relatable movie to my own life, as a young man, growing up and learning some cold hard truths. Catch it if you can, in full. 😁 *Happy Thanksgiving 🦃

I've always loved this movie! Undying, unconditional friendship and love between two misfits in a harsh world. Truly an outstanding masterpiece that is timeless!

Great to see and hear John Schlesinger, one of my favorite directors. COWBOY was originally rated "X" but that was changed after it won the academy award.

midnight cowboy is a great work of art. when they discuss art, craft is usually the key factor and although craft is the most essential ingredient in realising any great piece of art. what midnight cowboy does is fill the film with he(art). the depth of human understanding and compassion in this film is remarkable, carefully encased in a technique and a style that elevate it even more to create a powerful experience that penetrates deeply if you are willing to listen to it's honest tragic story

Looks like you got some great interviews there. I love how Jon was still amused by his little glasses bit decades later. Too bad this wasn't picked up for later DVD releases. Was there copyright/ownership issues? How long is the full documentary?

Don't know if Voigt has read any other of James Leo Herlihy's works, doesn't sound from his comments as if he has. I think he's a terrific writer, but have to say that he's the saddest writer I've ever read, with a really bleak vision of the world as he saw it.

This is one of my favorite movies !!! Here we have a pair of miss matched dreamers who become a team by accident.....There are hardships along the way but they stick together .................. I especially enjoyed the fantasy scene where Joe Buck and Enrico Salvatory Rizo were at the beach... It was a fantasy scene that gave the movie a little lift among all of the suffering and hardship............
