Sadly, just 41 years after she presented the Best Picture Oscar to Midnight Cowboy, which is still, to date, the only X-Rated film to win the Oscar for Best Picture (A precursor to the R rating still used today), Elizabeth Taylor tragically passed away due to numerous health problems at the age of 79, just a few days after the 83rd Academy Awards took place.

coralarch There's a wonderful story in one of her biographies in which the barely adolescent Elizabeth walks through the MGM commissary. geokaplan59 I can believe it. Even as a 2 year old, she had unbelievable charisma and beauty. My parents liked to go to movies when I was a kid, and "Midnight Cowboy" was so controversial that my father said, "Let's go check it out." When they came home, my father sat down and laughed. "It was a very entertaining movie," he said. "The theatre was packed and when Hoffman said, "More goddamn faggots in this town!" there was this huge, shocked laugh in the audience because that was the first time in any Hollywood movie that the characters used such language. I mean, you knew what 'faggot' meant, probably, but you'd never heard it in a movie. That flick dealt with male homosexuality, male prostitution, mental illness and drug abuse in ways that no other movie had."

It's really palpable that she was upset. She's trying hard to get through it. Richard Burton had just lost the Oscar moments before-- for the 6th time, and she really wanted him to win. His losing for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf two years before, when she won her second, put a strain on their relationship because it really was humiliating to him to keep losing. I'm sure she was not looking forward to how he'd be behaving after the show was over.
