As the comment above expressed this was a protest song for the many workers in the Blue Asbestos mine that claimed the lives of miners and their families, wives in particular succumbed to Asbestos entering their lungs while shaking out the clothes ready for washing. The Company fought and fought to deny responsibility and the Australian Government was limp to say the least in their support for the Miners. Money really is the root of all evil!

When he sang " And the company takes, what the company wants" your reactions to those lyrics was great, still knee deep in the same shit. Love and Respect from Australia 🇦🇺💯👍❤

It is a protest song against asbestos mining in Australia and the health effects it had on the workers in the mines . Peter Garrett lead singer was a minister in the Australian govt after the Oils , and has played since retiring from politics

This song is about the workers that worked the Blue Asbestos mine in a small town of Western Australia in the 50s and 60s. They kept turning up to work to put food on their families tables dispite the job slowly killing them and the town residents. The mine was shut down in the mid 60s due to poor profit and increased health issues. Slowly residents and works dies from Asbestos related diseases. The town was eventually shit down, isolated and formally removed from maps. Not a proud moment in Australia’s history.

The town was Wittenoom in the Pilbara about an hour from where I live. Still has 2 residents and the piles of blue asbestos are still there. You can find it on Google maps and look around the ghostly town

Building on what others have said, this is about Australian Blue Asbestos, a subsidiary of CSR (the "sugar refining company" reference in the lyrics). The town of Wittenoom, Western Australia was turned into a ghost town due to the contamination.

Thanks Tre! I requested this a while ago, along with "Forgotten Years, "Bedlam Bridge" and a few others by them! I'm glad that you like this! They were a unique band and were politically conscious! I'm not much into the eighties and up music but a few bands stuck out for me including Midnight Oil, Saigon Kick, The Jesus And Mary Chain and Creed!

good ole oils song. About Asbestos mining and the impact on the people in a outback town(illness from the asbestos). I think the video clip shows the town which now sits abandoned/evacuated with mounds of blue asbestos debry and dust. Nice choice of song, Midnight Oil where a very political cause band.

Oils were at the best early in their career, imo. That was when they rocked the hardest. Pretty much anything from their first three albums is fire.

And if the blue sky mining company won't come to my rescue, and if the sugar refining company won't save me, who's gonna save me?
