I was in a tiny piss ant outback town in Western Australia surrounded by red dust and emu's when I saw the local pub with a sign saying Oils Ain't Oils playing live tonight, decided to go check them out that night and grab a beer or three and who comes on stage but Midnight Oil! Within 10 minutes the entire town with a population of like 80 was there and it was a banger of a night, the band reveled in the small personal space of the pub and were smiling and loving every second of it, as were the punters. They were supposed to finish at 9pm due to the caravan park across the road/noise restrictions but they played till 10:30 odd, and no one came to stop them playing coz the 3 local policeman were in the crowd cheering them on. This was in the 90's and I still don't know why they didn't just perform as Midnight Oil but there you go. :)

The suprise band has paid off for me a few times. About 20 years ago the hoodoo gurus were reuniting for the BDO and were the brilliant suprise the Friday night before they played a hell of a gig at the Blaxland inn

Often bands will do one gig "incognito" to try out new material. If they don't advertise their presence using their real name, they get honest appreciation of their music without the hype of what they are known for. Cold Chisel performed a few gigs as The Barking Spiders.

That whole gig was insanely awesome. I was 14/15 years old when it first aired and watched it on tv and recorded it onto a vhs. When it came out on dvd it had been edited down a bit but was still incredible. Now the songs are all on KZbin we can revisit them anytime and it’s still fantastic. Best of Both Worlds and Read About It are relentless and the final song of the show, Stand in Line, is one of the hallmark versions of that song from their late 70s/early 80s repertoire. It was one of the encore songs in most of their shows for many years.

@@TheThamesmenToo Yeah their first album came out in 1978, the Blue Meanie album, followed by Head Injuries, which has their best song "live" in my opinion on it, "Stand In Line", which is a true fan favourite. A mongrel of a song. Power and the Passion, yes i still love the song if played live, in the moment, but it's not one i would listen to on a regular basis. Saw Midnight Oil at FESTIVAL HALL in 80s (if anyone knows Melbourne). 'Power and the Passion' talks about the Whitlam Aust Federal Govt dismissal by Queen's representative in 1975 & Pine Gap is secret US spy base in remote Australia. It relates the general peoples' complacency/apathy at the time and how we let things happen to us without questioning because of preocupation of beach, sporting, TV and pub life. Songs like this sparked a growing awakening, self-education, curiosity with increased environment/humanitarian movement/awareness that happened in the 80s.

I promise that you'll never have seen any band producing more energy and intensity on stage. And in every case, read the lyrics, which are deadly serious. This is an extraordinary performance. Also, search for their appearance on Jool Holland's Up Late show. They sing two songs there: My Country, and Truganini. Forgive me, there's something about the mighty Peter Garrett calling out in the middle of the former to let the Union Jack burn, while singing to a British audience!

Jimmy Sharman's Boxers is the must see track from this concert. If you thought the last minute of Power and the Passion was good, you will be blown away by the last 3 mins of this. Powerful and emotional vocals and the crescendo of horns and guitars is sensational. Turn it up loud.

By far the best song in this set is Back on the Borderline- it blows you away, and that's just the drum intro.

I love the Oils concerts where they spin the chocolate wheel and sing whatever song it lands on.... So cool.

@@TheThamesmenToo Yes I think they reverted to just corporate shows in the US in the last decade. Glad I saw them with their 5 members early & 4 members later. Also glad you Thames guys like/react to so much Aussie music. Keep it up bros.

Pre-1984 Midnight Oil was the best to watch and listen to. They were so raw and energetic. Once Peter Garrett became a Christian, they started mellowing out. Their greatest live shows are from the era of the Capitol Tour - "No Time For Games" and "I don't want to be the one" were just brilliant. I wish I was a about 4-5 years older to fully appreciate that era of theirs.

You said the Oils don't sound like their location, where have you been? From the 70s onward they have been synonymous with Australian rock... They played the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympics....

Off course they are Australian Royalty but They are bigger than that I think was the point

2 things,.. I've got my tickets for next year and am looking forward to seeing them. My wifes great great great grandmother was sent out here on the first fleet as a convict for stealing fabric. Initially sentenced to death but commuted to 7 yrs in the colonies. She never went back.

Peter Garrett, AM, was an MP for 9 years (2004-2013). The Oils' music was always political, and he put his money where his mouth is and actually ran for election. I don't necessarily agree with all his politics, but some sentiments are truly bi-partisan: "Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." And I love most of their songs. Check out: Blue Sky Mine, Forgotten Years, King of the Mountain, US Forces, Hercules, Short Memory, Read About It, Gunbarrel Highway, The Dead Heart, Bullroarer and Warakurna - just to name a few of my faves, but truth be told most of their stuff is great.

"Burning the midnight oil", a saying that means working hard and late into the night. I also wonder if it has an esoteric meaning for this band.

I went to see the Oil's Resist Tour concert in Newcastle Australia two night's ago. I was there for 1985 concert as well. AWESOME band and great music. Interesting comment that the song was a bit empty ??? With the Oils you have to listen to the message not just the music. Throughout their career they have been very outspoken on politics, culture, prejudice and the environment. Have a look at there live session in front of Exxon's Offices in New York after the Exxon Valdes disaster - that's typical Oils :)
