Dreamworld - Lyrics
The Breakfast Creek Hotel is up for sale
The last square mile of terra firma gavelled in the mail
So farewell to the Norfolk Island pines
No amount of make believe can help this heart of mine
End - your dreamworld is just about to end
Fall - your dreamworld is just about to fall
Your dreamworld will fall
So shut that buckle and turn that key again
Take me to a place they say the dreaming never ends
Open wide drive that mystery road
Walk through Eden's garden and then wander as you go
End - your dreamworld is just about to end
Fall - your dreamworld is just about to fall
Your dreamworld will fall
Sign says honeymoon to rent
Cloudland into dreamland turns
The sun comes up and we all learn
Those wheels must turn

In 1988 I finished an MS in environmental science was convinced I would change the world. The morning of my first job interview, I recall watching this video. 22 years later and beaten down by the realities of making a living and supporting a family, I listen to this with a more balanced perspective but sadness at having lost that idealism. At 50, I am recommitted to embracing the environmental cause I once thought I would champion but fell far short of.

@@Nayaez11 , Peter Garret , while an Australian Govt Minister , caused many young men to die who installed insulation " Pink Batts " into the rooves of houses . All due to ill thought out energy policies which he introduced in haste. Peter was an egocentric Politician , with a " let them eat cake " attitude while wearing a Green Halo . He never apologised or showed condolensces to the Parents of young men who died. And when the govt subsidies for Pink Batts finished , thousands of tons of this dangerous pollutant were dumped as land fill. One thing is certain , Peter Carrot spent more time thinking about his set lists , than he ever did about Pink Batt installation

I recently started listening to the Midnight Oil a couple of years ago, and this song is by far my favorite. My interpretation of the song is that it is a solemn statement about how those nostalgic times and places we grew up loving and enjoying will eventually change over time, and will inevitably come to an end one day for one reason or another as time progresses. "Your dreamworld" is such an appropriate set of lyrics because it applies to anyone's specific magical dream-like time or place in there life that was so meaningful to them. It is a constant reminder and warning to not only appreciate that you were able to experience those times and places in their prime, but to also enjoy what you still currently have, because one day it will only be a memory.

Not that the interpretation is wrong, but the song specifies places in Queensland where there's been massive development. The Breakfast Creek Hotel (worth a visit) is a historically protected property. Dreamworld is an actual place on the Queensland Gold Coast, a huge amusement park. Learned so much about Australia (and a bit about the US) simply researching their lyrics. E.g. "Hercules" is about the Lockheed Hercules C130 purchased by the Oz government (and used by the US military)
@RobertJW
@RobertJW 3 ай бұрын
Specifically, the Breakfast Creek Hotel wasn't heritage listed when the song was released in '87 and was at risk of being sold off and torn down for apartments. The Cloudland dance hall had this exact fate befall it, demolished literally overnight in cooperation with the corrupt state government of Queensland. This song is an explicitly political one about rampant corruption and development in Queensland in the late 80s.

What a hypocrite , Peter Garret the lead singer in Midnight Oil joined the Green Party which he abandoned for The Labor Party & ended up in the Federal Government of Australia as Minister for the Environment . He was completely incompetant and his actions in the " Pink Batt fiasco " killed many young men which he never apologised, plus resulted in other disasters imposed upon the people of Australia. He did more harm than good . He was all talk but no action.

Australians should of had more pride in themselves. Sadly they were stricken with the curse of White Guilt. Guilt for building such a great place that they feel the need to tear it down themselves. The biggest detriment to a western country does not come from the outside, but from the inside by the people who's ancestors built it.

Dreamworld is a large theme park situated on the Gold Coast in Queensland. It is currently Australia's largest theme park with over 27 rides including 4 roller coasters. To create it a large section of forest was destroyed. It includes an artificial beach with a wave machine....right on the beach. Midnight Oil wrote this song in protest. You can see billboard ad in the video. The song and video came out in 1987 on Diesel and Dust, not 1997.

What a Power House of a song! It's probably my favorite Oils song though there's one I only remember a partial musical & lyrics bit and yet to find it on YT. Anyway here in NYC I got to see them 3 xs '80s & '90s ! The melody with such a haunting brace of guitar music & sonic's! Really everything vocals, bass & drums. I actually sing it as "Their Dreamworld is just about to fall" and "dedicate" it to RW's in our USA. Hoping it will happen. I rank them w my other super favorites: The Who, U2, Springsteen, Patti Smith Group & Midnight Oil. Have several of their cassettes. What's great is though I had give up my cassettes etc when I hear the songs here on YT that I pick out; I remember most of the ones I know! ETA - There's Warakuna, Truganini, Stars of Warbuton, Diesel & Dust etc! 👍🧡

I live on the Texas, U.S. Gulf Coast and our dreamworld is already long gone. Hotels and other businesses destroyed a once pristine surf and wildlife spot! I surfed it in the 80's and it was great. I also lived on Oahu, Hawaii, U.S. in the 80's and went back recently and its as fucked up now as the east coast of Australia. Probably worse! My uncle lives in Queensland and said they are now encroaching almost as far north 300 miles north of Brisbane. He lives 200 miles south of Cape York in Far North Queensland the last unspoilt paradise on earth. If that falls, then there is no hope for humanity or the natural world. I shed a tear for the flora and fauna and native peoples fucked up by commercialism.

In my opinion their best song. One of many great songs but the opening shot of Stanwell Park beach near Wollongong clinches it. 🎶🎸🎤🥁👍

God, I miss them. I was fortunate to see them twice at small venues. The first being at The Fillmore in SF. They opened with “Dreamworld” and the place went BONKERS. I have NEVER been to a show where the crowd lost it and the ground was shaking.

Peter Garret , while an Australian Govt Minister , caused many young men to die who installed insulation " Pink Batts " into the rooves of houses . One thing is certain , Peter Carrot spent more time thinking about his set lists , than he ever did about Pink Batt installation ..

So true! As a social worker I am so glad there is since 2000 not only a new definition of social work (for radical social change,liberation, empowerment, collective human rights and social justice, but also such a rich literature that criticises the status quo and shows us h0ow we can turn that analysis into practice! And gives us new ways to work alongside and for indigenous peoples. Strength in partnership, comrades.
