'Truganini' It takes conviction and serious balls to perform this brilliantly written 'Anti-British Monarchy protest song' on an English stage, televised by the cameras of the BBC! Subversive - with a touch of genius.

DepressedCapitalist They are not a punk rock band. I will not argue with you. They do NOT identify with being a PUNK rock band. I looked up this information and Peter Garrett himself, in an article says, verbatim, "We do not identify ourselves as being Punk Rock" so straight from Peter's mouth to this article. So, Depressed, get your facts before you post. I know a little more than you do about Midnight Oil. So on that note, G'day.
@DepressedCapitalist9 жыл бұрын
Cate Stone Real punk bands (your job to find them if you can) never identified themselves with being punk. After all, punk is a label that the market and people like you put on bands. The fact that you do not consider this band punk clearly shows you know nothing about them despite your rambling. On that note, you also know nothing about punk so go listen to blink 182 my friend.
@cate43109 жыл бұрын
I beg your pardon? I know nothing about them? Why don't you stop your rambling. What you perceive to be punk is unreal. You need to get your facts straight, before you come on here and start rambling like a moron. And I am not your friend in any way shape or form. And I do not like Blink 182. I have listened to them off and on. That is my prerogative, so on that note I will say, G'day. And please, do not comment back to me.

Dumb question from someone that doesn't understand very well this history and things alike involved: They sing "I see Union Jack in flames" in UK, right? Wouldn't that sound a little offensive? I mean, I do not care for those things as well, flags, countries, and whatever, but wouldn't that trigger some reactions? Can someone please explain this to me, I'm not trying to start a flamewar here, just really wanted to understand history and culture. Many thanks :)
@LOSS4449 жыл бұрын
Michel Vieira OK, Very complex issue but i will try to sum it up briefly (and without offending anyone). Basically the British came over to Australia and committed some heinous crimes against the indigenous people (the Australian Aboriginals/kooris) (this is HISTORY and I have nothing against the British or any other race of people). Peter Garrett is basically saying that a lot of Australians, especially those in power, still oppress the Aboriginal people when he sings "I see namatjira (Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira) in custody, I see Truganini (last full blood Aboriginal in Tasmania) in chains". Rightly or wrongly some people still see the Union Jack as a symbol of that oppression, so in singing "i see the Union Jack in flames" he is not so much having a go at the British as he is at the Australians who support a monarchy. I don't know if you're from Aus but this song was written when there was a huge debate as to whether Australia remained a monarchy or became a republic. There may be a few technical errors in what I have stated, so anyone who knows more please don't hammer me too much. BTW its not a dumb question at all- nothing is a dumb question if it is asked with a genuine desire to learn. Sorry, I was going to be brief.
@BispoSnake9 жыл бұрын
Hey there, thanks a lot for shedding some light on this, mate. So, he goes more against Aus government, right? That would certainly be more safe then :) I'm born and raised in South America (Brazil) and didn' know this parte of history. Googled it and didn't found anything. Your explanation helped a lot, thanks. The part about the aboriginal issue you talked I already imagined, as the history here in my country is similar. I don't havê anything against Portugal as well, this is history - as you pointed :) Thanks again for spending time on this, appreciate it. And, hell of a song right? :)
