DO YOU IDENTIFY MORE AS "SUNSHINE" ☀ OR "MIDNIGHT RAIN"?! ☔

I identify more as midnight rain, i think my personality is more complex and dark than simple and clear like i would think a sunshine personality is.

I think “it” in the “it came like a postcard” is her vision or flash forward of what a future with this love interest would look like. She saw where this relationship was heading… and it wasn’t what she wanted, at least not then. She had other dreams for herself other than wife and mother and homemaking and holiday parties… the “1950s shit” from Lavender Haze. It was his goal (his “everyday”), not hers. It was a lovely dream for someone… just not her. And she peers through this window, this time portal in to the future of what might have been, but she didn’t like what she saw, where this relationship was headed, and she gave it away before it she even had it.

Hey! Loved your analysis I’ll just add some of my thoughts - 1. I’m Midnight Rain - I associate this more with the over analyzers, over reflecting people, almost chaotic energy that have this image of we don’t really know what’s happening because it’s dark and we just hear rain 2. My first listen I always connected the “he” to the rejected in Champagne problems - the word “bride” in that song led me there and it felt like the rejected in champagne problems (same images of a great person who seems flawless) had this image of replicating what he imagined a bride would be after he was done college and still dating his college sweet heart. I know she says she never gave a reason in the song but I had this idea that now she knows her reason and she knows he probably found someone that makes him not think about her because she would bring his sunshine to an eclipse. 3. I agree there is no regret - but I treat it almost like a sleepless night where she had a rough day and she’s simulating in her mind if she just took what she believed people from her town thought she would do 4. I do think this and other songs suggest a theme of the power of independence and not feeling the need to get married. When I talked to my students about champagne problems I always suggested that maybe she just didn’t see her self getting married at all - maybe she doesn’t want kids? I don’t want to say Taylor has these thoughts but I do see themes that the energy is a push for independence and to pursue personal paths rather than following what some may find traditional Please keep making videos they make me think and your personality is perfect for my Swifty heart

To me if I think of the word "wife" (or husband) I think of like, the domestic life. Waking up next to their spouse, sending each other to work, doing chores and errands, sometimes they go out together, sometimes they stay home, sometimes each goes out on their own, etc., but I think of the every day life and the dynamic between just the two of them. But when I think of a "bride" (or groom) I think of them dressed on this very fancy special dress, and having this big event that their family is coming over for. Like they make a list of guests and have to think of the sitting and the catering for those guests. And there are many small rituals and traditions that are part of the wedding, like the speeches, the first dance, and many others depending on religion, ethnic background, etc. So to me, using "bride" instead of "wife" says that not only did he want someone to settle down with and maybe start a family and all that, there was also a part of it that was about meeting the expectations of others. For the "full of cages, full of fences" line, it reminds me of the "your picket fence is sharp as knife" from High Infidelity. I'm not from the US from what I understand when people talk about 'white picket fences' they mean like the suburban single family home and lifestyle that is pushed as the American dream. So it's a lifestyle that for many is aspirational or the ideal, but for the protagonist it's a lifestyle that would make them feel trapped. We already know that is the concept of the whole album but even just looking at the song by itself I imagine the protagonist lying awake at night while it's raining, maybe she can't sleep because the sound of the rain, and something about nights like that makes her think of that person she had in her life a long time ago and starts to imagine what their life would be if they were still together. I see the "it came like a postcard" as her being able to picture it all in her head, she can see their home and their picture perfect holidays. She's thinking of how if she had stayed she would've been comfortable and wouldn't have to face as many hardships as she did, or at least not the same, but ultimately she knows if she had stayed she would've regretted not following her dreams.

Love the insightful analysis! The approach to use a dictionary to define words to help the analysis really opened up new ways of looking at this haunting song.

Also, I associate midnight rain with darkness and mistery(not in a negative way). So i would think a midnight rain person would be more mysterious and would have a personality more complex than the sunshine person

oh god this is my fave from midnights 🤩 not only are the lyrics great, the production also captures midnight and rain so well. i interpret the first line of the chorus as in the protagonist is addressing the rain and telling it a story while they're looking out this window unable to sleep at midnight.
