It wasn't a remake. It was a live version of the Broadway adaptation. Which, admittedly, is a fairly obscure musical by Broadway standards. I think that mistake was half the problem, honestly. People who aren't huge musical theater nerds went in thinking they were getting A Christmas Story because that's exactly how Fox advertised it.

Which is why this getting such backlash because people are not aware this was on Broadway five years before FOX did and it was successful. I do not blame the audience for there ignorance I blame who failed to advertise it has a musical. If they advertised this was the Broadway musical coming to TV it would have gone over better. Oh well better luck with Rent Live in a few months. Allison Williams said when she did Peter Pan that audiences are to cynical and they love to hate watch. She is right.

ECKohns Which is what the problem was. Not everyone knew there was a stage play musical beforehand. By not saying it’d be a musical they fucked up. People who had no interest in musicals probably tuned out(I’m neutral towards musicals and I tuned out after like the second song), and people who like musicals were probably disappointed in the performances. Basically it was a mistake.

Those aware of the stage musical did like this. But Fox did make a mistake by not advertising this as a musical I guess since it has Live in the title they just assumed people would know. If they advertised better this would have gone over better with people. The Broadway saw moderate success being nominated for 3 Tony Awards including Best Musical. I love score by Pasek and Paul. I loved the Broadway cast album before seeing this.

Jesse Shade If you can, search for "Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss" on KZbin. It's a movie that aired on PBS and the Disney Channel in the early 90's and based on one of Jean Shepard's stories. That film is very obscure and it stars a teenage Jerry O'Connell as Ralphie.

All I can say is that it's sad that this was Brad's first live musical, because Hairspray and Grease Live were genuinely good. Hairspray had a few minor issues in that it tried to adapt both the 2007 movie and the Broadway musical simultaneously, but it wasn't bad overall.

Hairspray Live used little from the movie it was more based stage show. In fact when Harvey wrote the show for NBC he only referred to the stage show. Grease however is a hybrid of the movie and stage play. The Wiz was beyond amazing. Peter Pan was like all other productions of that musical if you ask me. The Sound of Music Live from ITV in the UK is far better than NBCs.
