The Kevin Bacon one was an adaptation to a sequel novel that would never have existed if the first Charles Bronson movie hadn't mangled the original novel's premise: the author was trying to illustrate how vigilantism DOESN'T work and just ends up destroying your life.

The screenwriter (Joe Carnahan) of this movie hates it. He was originally going to direct it too (he also wrote and directed Narc and The Grey) and says he wanted to set in Los Angeles and have it star Liam Neeson and make it similar to Collateral (one of my all-time favorite action movies). When MGM turned him down, he sent the head of the studio a nasty letter about it. He especially did not want Bruce Willis to star because he thought he was lazy and arrogant.

Yeah MGM has not been doing so well lately aside from Bond. I haven't seen the Carrie remake because it's really nothing we haven't seen before plus I have the original on DVD. The Robocop remake wasn't terrible but still meh. I HATED the Poltergeist remake because it took a horror staple and sucked all of the tension out of it. I actually enjoyed The Magnificent Seven remake but then again, the original was a remake of a classic Japanese film. Just saw Death Wish today and not only was it terrible but so poorly timed in terms of release.

Honestly, I wish he would direct a DEADPOOL sequel in the future as he seems perfect for that kind of material (no need to worry about him writing a script since it would have to be from the writers of the other recent DEADPOOL films).

4:41 Reminds me of how I felt regarding the Talia Al Ghul revelation in TDKR. It felt rather cliche how for years she hated her father, but upon Bruce killing him...she suddenly found herself instantly forgiving the man, and deciding, 'I'm going to get revenge on the man who killed him, AND, finish 'my father's work!'"

Willis' attitude could be the reason why he's doing the films he's doing now. listening to Kevin Smith tell the Willis story from Cop Out, and reading from other directors and actors and actresses about his arrogance.....this may have been his last film leading. NOW, what I would suggest is him doing some smaller parts in better films to show he can actually do a film without the tude. he needed to be humble....it has happened.

OH GOOD, I'm not the only one who thinks Eli Roth is a terrible filmmaker. Really though... you can tell this is an Eli Roth movie when the Daughter wakes up the Hospital... cries once... and NEVER GIVES A FUCK ABOUT HER MOTHER AGAIN!!!! The next scene is her in an Elevator in a wheel-chair with an OBVIOUS "bad guy" chatting with her in a creepy way, and she just keeps smiling and talking. THEN... she goes home, has dinner with her Dad and Uncle and she looks VERY HAPPY and says "It's SO GOOD to be Home" with a big smile like she just got home from college :D HER MOM WAS FUCKING MURDERED IN THE SAME HOUSE the last time she was Awake. She just casually chows on dinner and smiling and laughing with her Dad and Uncle. Did she even get a single feeling that something was missing... like a person... who gave birth to her? NOPE. Oh... then theres ANOTHER Home Invasion where she acts scared. That's taken care of, then she's off to College or whatever with another huge smile acting like everything is normal. THAT IS THE DIRECTOR'S FAULT not knowing how to Direct his Actors. ELI ROTH SUCKS!!! All that was needed for the Daughter was something like... have the Daughter distraught and scared to go home. Let her talk to Bruce Willis' character (her father), and say "DAD, I don't think I can stay at Home anymore... i just can't do it"... and Bruce Willis can say something like "BABY, I will never let anyone hurt you again. I'll never turn my back again." YES that sounds corny but it's WAY BETTER than what Eli Roth gave us... a HAPPY-GO-LUCKY Daughter who doesn't even need to see her Mom's tombstone and is TOTALLY HAPPY AND EXCITED to be back Home. When I heard "Eli Roth will be helming the upcomming Death Wish remake" a while back... I knew instantly that it was going to be a piece of shit. He has not made 1 GOOD movie... just "OK" Gore-Porn. Cabin Fever was not good, just kind of fun.... Hostel was not good, just kind of fun and brutal.... NOBODY gives a shit about The Green Inferno unless you like zero story and lots of gore.... Knock, Knock was just stupid.... ELI ROTH FUCKING SUCKS!!!

"A very dated premise" ...what?
@adamtherock2008
@adamtherock2008 6 жыл бұрын
Wrequiem Basically the original Death Wish came out at a time when big city crime was very high and a very real fear for many citizens. The original felt timely and fresh, and fit right in with people’s feelings at the time. We’ve since had hundreds of crappy imitators come out, even the original had a string of bad sequels, all recycling the same premise and tropes we’ve come to expect in these revenge stories and the remake just feels like one of those bad imitators. Maybe “dated” was the wrong word, more “cliched”.
@wrequiem1727

Wrequiem yes but a remake should build on the original and bring something new to the table like The Thing or The Fly. Otherwise what’s the point? My original comment was more jokey but sure. Can’t plwase em all I guess.

I think Bruce Willis is just prepping for Glass for a while. Considering how good his performance in Unbreakable was (one of his best IMHO, especially in how expressively understated it is), and how good the movie itself was, I want him to pull off a repeat of that performance to round off the trilogy. Also, Shyamalan has been tempered by the status of Hollywood pariah for a while in the recent past, so I think he'll manage to pull through on this one.

Vigilante films are basically slashers where the Slasher is the good guy/gal. I mean, they are also rightwing power fantasies but the structure is more that of a slasher. Also. One thing that I love about the original Death Wish is that the "Hero" never actually kills Goldblums rapist character... After the inciting incident, Goldblum just disappears... That crime never gets avenged.

Brad, thank you for giving this an honest and fair review. I'm not interested in this film, but there are SO many reviews that blast it for political reasons and basically say that anyone who enjoyed the original film and the remake are gun-loving, trigger-happy nuts who are one step away from their own mass shooting and it gets fucking annoying reading a hot take in what's supposed to be a movie review.

I thought the movie was fine. As "Liberal" as my views are and as much as I think there's a *lot* of problems in this country when it comes to "gun culture" I'm able to turn all of that off and just enjoy a couple hours of entertainment and I mostly got that here. I think the flaws and good-points of this movie outlined here by Brad and Dave are all things I agree with. Some of the "gorier" stuff, while kind of neat, also felt kind-of out of place and more fitting for a Final Destination movie or something. I did feel like Willis really did "try" in this movie because, yeah, he either cares or he doesn't and when he doesn't, damn does it show. He seemed to mostly waist-deep in the pool here, and did dive down on occasion. I'm surprised Brad didn't mention how "odd" it was to see Bruce Willis and and Elisabeth Shue as a married couple. Growing up in an era with these two figures being in so many movies it's hard to see them as a "couple." In reality the two aren't that far apart in age to make being married impossible or unlikely, but just based on the types of movies I've seen these two actors in all my life them being a married couple just felt odd. (Particularly thinking of Shue in movies where she played a teenager like Karate Kid and Adventures in Babysitting.) But, I dunno, I came out of this movie having been entertained. I saw it on a Saturday evening for around $10, so I guess I agree with the "matinee showing" price thing. (Not quite matinee price I paid, but it's cheaper than how I normally see movies.) I might get this on Home Video when it comes out as part of "The Collection" but don't quite see it as one I'm wanting to see again. I need to re-watch the original and its sequels.

Years ago I heard Sylvester Stallone was interested in writing, directing and starring in a remake of Death Wish. I don’t know if that was true or not. But I think Stallone would’ve been perfect for that role. The original Death Wish was great but it wasn’t a masterpiece. So a decent remake could’ve been a lot better than the original movie. But with Eli Roth at the helm. The movie is gonna sub-par at best.

Looper WAS popular when it came out. I was there! I was actually surprised at just how much mainstream attention this cheaply produced but masterfully executed sci-fi was getting. The cinema I saw it in was the same one I saw blockbuster films at, and I was happy to see a good film that wasn’t made by Christopher Nolan getting that attention. - I just wanted to vent that experience after the popularity of looper was brought up, I hope I didn’t come across as angry.

Afgan war veteran who emigrated in the US returns to Russia to find out that his friend and his pregnant wife are both murdered by the local gansters. And so he starts a one man crusade to wipe out the criminals involved. I don't know if can get a copy with english track or subtitles, but if you can - certainly check it out.

I mean I guess. I feel like he was just remaking TCM and 2 of his own movies (House and Devils) then slapping on the actual remake on top of that. I guess I had just seen that before from him. But to be fair I prefer Platinum Dunes TCM remake to anything Zombie has done so maybe I'm biased.
@simval84

I don't think Rob Zombie's Halloween is like TCM at all. I respect that he tried to do it differently, but God damn he can't write a credible middle class American character if his life depended on it!

@9:45, Does it? Chicago has a low murder rate per capita relative to other cities in the US. It’s not even among the top ten most dangerous cities. I mean, you could use the total murder rate rather than per capita to justify using this city as the setting, but cities with a very high population like Chicago tend to have more total crime just by the fact that it has more people. So doing that would be misleading. So I think it’s very misleading to compare Chicago now to how New York was then. Edit for source: wgntv.com/2017/06/20/chicago-not-most-dangerous-u-s-city-in-new-study/
@StonedGremlinProductions

@quleughy 6 жыл бұрын
Stoned Gremlin Productions Stoned Gremlin Productions Hm? @9:22 - 9:30 You both said it made sense to make that comparison and even went on to acknowledge the movie’s point about the crime rate by referencing the most problematic areas in Chicago. But it’s still not a sensible comparison in my opinion because even considering those problematic areas, Chicago still has a low per capita murder rate relative to many other cities in the US. So how does it make sense to set this movie in Chicago as you both agree? I’m not saying Chicago is perfect, but the problem goes further than people only cherry-picking those locations of Chicago to undermine the city’s reputation. The problem is the majority of cities are going to necessarily have those locations just due to population size, but even focusing on (cherry-picking) those bad locations is nothing compared to the bad locations of a large number of other cities. That’s what I’m saying. To even focus on Chicago’s bad areas at all, as if it represents the worst of bad areas in the US, is misleading. We agree that Chicago is being misrepresented, but I say it’s to the point where using it at all, even putting a magnifying glass to any bad areas within Chicago, as an example of a city that’s needing vigilante justice is a wrong.
