1) In 1999, Tess Gerritssen writes the novel "Gravity", about a group of astronauts who are exposed to an alien parasite that causes horrific disasters onboard the ISS, leaving only one female crewman alive to return to Earth. 2) In 2013, after a series of convoluted events New Line/Warner use the book as the basis of the movie "Gravity", but leave out all the elements relating to the alien life form body horror themes, focusing instead on just the spaceborn disaster aspect. 3) Tess Gerritssen sues Warner for breach of contract, but gives up in 2015 from sheer emotional and financial exhaustion. 4) In 2017, Skydance Media produce "Life", a movie which picks up and makes use of the other half of the novel "Gravity", that Warner left out of the movie "Gravity". 5) Being a writer can suck :P Seriously, read the novel!

The DNA research being stolen from Rosalind Franklin was real, but the "woman who wrote the Matrix and Terminator" is fake. Matrix was stolen from Grant Morrison's comic Invisibles.

@Romano Coombs How about the fact that literary historians over the past decade or so have started to acknowledge that there's a decent chance Beowulf was written by a woman who either couldn't take credit, or had credit taken from her.

I haven't seen the movie, but octopuses are remarkably adept at squeezing into tight spaces. If I remember correctly, the only factor limiting an octopus' ability to fit through or into a space is the size of its brain. You could certainly be right about the alien getting away with things that even an octopus couldn't manage. Great review as always Brad/Brian. :)
@blither46567 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure it's the beak not the brain (?) but yeah good point.
@taqu7 жыл бұрын
I _just_ made the same comment before I noticed yours. Doesn't an octopus have 9 brains, 8 in each of its tentacles? Basically, if their beak fits, they fit.

So imagine: You're at the end of the movie "Threads". It's been nonstop horrors of nuclear winter, generations have died undignified deaths alone with no one to mourn them, the young girl who's got brain damage from radiation poisoning is giving birth to her stillborn rape baby, and right as she's about to scream, we smash straight to the chorus of "Hooked on a Feeling" That's the dissonance the ending of this movie's soundtrack had.

Regular octopus are actually amazing at fitting through tiny spaces even when they're full sized. They can get through a hole with a 2 inch diameter - as long as their beak fits, they fit. If the monster was at least partly based on a real octopus, those skills would make some sense.

The more you guys talked about the movie, the more I slowly started to realize what this movie actually was: The writers/producers of this film probably saw that one Cowboy Bebop episode with the blob-like creature that attacks the crew and then got the insane idea to try to make it into a serious horror movie.

Actually no, we were thinking about Deep Star Six. I mistakenly said Michael Carmine, but we were talking about Deep Star Six. The monster in Life looks kind of like a Sea Monster.

Weird you were thinking about Deep Star Six considering it was a more typical "sea monster" deal than a "organism that enters your body and sucks you dry and grows from feeding" like from Leviathan. *shrugs* content6.flixster.com/question/42/87/14/4287144_std.jpg I mean this is the beastie from Deepstar Six.

I wouldn't consider The Belko Experiment a horror movie. More like "goresploitation" mixed with "deathsploitation" (as in a movie whose main selling point is to see a large cast of people killed off in gruesome ways, like Saw or Final Destination)

I'd say this is definitely a rental. I saw it in theaters and liked it enough, and it was a nice way to spend my birthday with a few friends. I will give them credit for not having the trope of the "I'm going home soon and this is my last week here" crewman or something like that in the film. I do agree it could've used some more exposition at the outset to better define the characters...wasn't a bad movie, wasn't stellar, but a fun watch. Can't wait for Covenant in a month and a half though.

The thing about the guy in the wheelchair reminds me of William Fitchner's character from Contact. They never mention even once that his character is blind. All you really get is people helping him walk once, and saying that he recognized how James Woods smelled. That's it.

@ 15:45 Heh, just saw the film an hour ago. I was thinking that there were now two Calvins too, one on the external of the ISS which Hugh (black guy) saw before going into cardiac arrest, and then there was the Calvin that had entered Hugh's body after attaching to him the first time when he broke the glove. I remembered Miranda suggesting at the beginning that because it didn't have a central nervous system like us and that each cell was an organism unto itself that it could be a super-organism/hive mind creature. Lol, I kept expecting a post-credits scene showing the ISS crashing and a second Calvin surviving reentry, setting it up for an invasive Martian species rather than Prometheus-monster flick. Clearly I over-analyzed the direction and cinematography. Ah well, missed opportunity.

I think Brad was thinking of Leviathan when Brian was talking about Deep Star Six...both did come out in 1989 so it's understandable, lol. I say that because Leviathan did have Michael Carmine (as well as Peter Weller, Richard Crenna, Ernie Hudson, and Daniel Stern) who Brad mentioned. I don't mind Deep Star Six...I actually like it. But I Love Leviathan from the same year...it's a childhood favorite (Jerry Goldsmith score, Stan Winston FX, & a cast with Peter Weller/Ernie Hudson/Daniel Stern). And sadly...Christian Slater did do a movie like that and it was called Stranded from 2013.
@StonedGremlinProductions7 жыл бұрын
No I was thinking of Deep Star Six, I know Leviathan is the Peter Weller one. But given how long it had been since I'd seen DSS, I simply thought Michael Carmine was in that one.

octopus, the critter you compared the alien to? It can compress itself and fit into spaces far smaller than you would think.
@BainesMkII7 жыл бұрын
Haven't watched the film, but if the creature is based on an octopus, then maybe it *can* get through small gaps and pipes despite having a large body. What an octopus can do is pretty darn amazing. A 600 pound octopus can move through a hole that is less than an inch wide.

Friday The 13th (2009) has the opening title card come in after 2 opening sequences, one of them the opening credits, and the other an entire 20 minute opening prologue. And you could've completely cut one of them out.
@hostagexandox7 жыл бұрын
I had just seen this movie so this lines up perfectly. I laughed all the way through it. Basically it's "the worlds smartest people" making some of the dumbest mistakes and suffering the consequences. Once you understand it's one of THOSE movies it becomes as hilarious as The Purge. I think it would have been a better movie as a graphic Hard R black comedy horror film where the astronauts are basically Camp Counselors waiting to be killed off by the space squid. Which is probably what they attempted with the ending and the playing of "Spirit in the Sky" when the credits began to roll. For example, when there are the two remaining characters left on the space station and they realize they only have 38 minutes to live, a guy and a girl, they should have played "Let's Get it On" by Marvin Gaye (the universally recognized song for a comedy sex scene) and started fucking. By the end of the film, myself and the people I was with in the theater were all just chanting for the space squid to be in the capsule. Just "Squid! Squid! Squid! Squid!" Then we got what was basically the happy ending, at least for me. That's what you get for breaking the first rule of quarantine. If something bad is happening, don't open the god damned door!

I actually like the mid-opening title thing, I think it can work. I expected to hate or at least be ambivalent towards this but I kinda liked it. It's a really fine line, isn't it? You either spend too much time on a cast of characters that we know doesn't really matter because they are just going to end up being alien bait, or we don't spend enough time getting to know them as people and we aren't emotionally invested in their demise, so we don't care that they're being terrorized and brutally slain. However, I tend to lead more toward the latter as being the better option, because really, that is what the people came to see in a situation like this. It's not the English Patient or Sophie's Choice, ya know? Give us a few minutes of dialogue so we can figure out what kind of archetypes they are, and their development will come as the movie progresses.

The creature stuck to Reynolds leg without hurting him (yet), because it wanted back on the ship. If it killed Reynolds out there, the others wouldn't have opened the hatch. Everything it does is pretty logical.

I find myself agreeing with these guys 90% of the time, but not on this one. The film isn't great and Sunshine is the better choice for fans of Hiroyuki Sanada in space, but I quite enjoyed it. While the concept is far from original, the acting and film making definitely elevate the material; though I do agree the creature POV shots were frustrating. Also, I enjoyed how the structure and pacing got things moving along quickly and even felt much of the dialogue through these scenes did a fine job setting up the characters. All that being said, I can agree that I would prioritize Split and Get Out over this one. However, for those who have seen those better flicks, I have no problem recommending Life.

I was disappointed that they didn't go anywhere with the alien sparing the Japanese guy in the sleeping pod after he looked at photos of his family.
