The way I saw Diana's rules working was that: 1) regular light causes her to become invisible and intangible, 2) the blacklight neutralized her ability to disappear, and 3) she could move through a lighted area - she just can't interact with anything while it's lit. *Spoilers below*, though. Oh, incidentally - the ending was supposed to be different, where there was about 10 minutes more conflict at the climax but it was cut due to focus testing - people hated that the suicide didn't actually stop Diana's onslaught. Of course, that then implied that someone with Depression should commit suicide, and seeing as the writer has dealt with it himself... suffice to say he's eager to clarify that in the sequel. And I kind of disagree with the CPS woman being villainous - it was clear that she was primarily interested in the kid's wellbeing, and she laid out precisely how hard it would've been for Rebecca to fight her mother for custody. She didn't say she shouldn't, but just that it's a *lot* more complicated than what's usually seen in Hollywood. And my interpretation of Diana's "experiment" is that it didn't actually kill her - she just "shifted" to whatever plane she's on now. She can only manifest when near people with a strong enough mental connection (e.g. Sophie), but can't really appear *to* them without their being psychologically unbalanced. That would explain the basement being filled with the scrawlings on the wall.

I really enjoyed this film, though I haven't seen the Conjuring 2, so I don't know how it compares. One thing that I especially enjoyed was it didn't have one of those stupid "fake out" endings that a lot of horror films have. I am not against the characters dying at the end, but if they have earned it, I hate when the film goes "They won, oh wait no they didn't, fuck you" right at the end.

I thought this movie was pretty great. It wasn't very scary, but it's very engaging, and my audience was totally into it. All the teenagers were screaming and freaking out. (And not in the annoying way, they weren't laughing at the scares or anything.) The audience even cheered at one point. It was just a really fun theater experience.

The little 3 min. short that this movie is based from, is one of the scariest, most effective things I've ever watched. Also called Light's Out. The movie looks okay to me and I do want to see it, but that short is what I've shown to many people when they ask for something scary.

A reason for the ghost having strange rules might be because of the short it's based on. I liked the the "wait wtf?!" feel I got from the short so an extended version doesn't appeal. Glad you guys had a good time though, you see enough shit horror films.

Your review is spot on for Lights Out. I was never really scared at all but I was pretty entertained throughout. I was kind of sad that Billy Burke didn't have more to do. :-( Great analogy to Bill Pullman in Grudge. Forgot about that! As far as what was happening with Bello's character - she wasn't 100% saying oh it's all fine, considering she is mentally ill. I was kind of p*ssed off half the film that they really almost allowed Child Services and Maria Bello's character actually BLAME the daughter for everything that is going on in and that she abandoned the mom. But overall, a good film (I love the short it is based on).

In regards to the DCFS lady (at least here in Illinois) if a parent is the legal guardian and calls in to inform them that her child has been removed, even by a family member, then they have to bring the kid back home. Just saying "it's a sleepover" won't cut it. If I remember correctly, they mention Maria Bello called them about the kid being taken by the sister.

My brother and I had the exact same reaction. We both left saying, "that was good," but then listed off all the things we had issues with the entire drive home. For every few good points in this movie there is something that didn't work or just took me out of the story. This is the first movie in a while to leave me confused about how I feel about it.

Maybe what a film could do with the 8MM film trope is show 2 characters, one with a modern camera &/or iPhone while the other has an older camera (maybe for a photography course or something) but in the modern tech nothing shows up but with the older tech you can see the ghosts/demons/etc. Give some explanation why with all this tech that the unseen aren't seen with cameras everywhere.

She goes incorporeal in normal light and disappears but because a black light is a different spectrum of light she remains visible in the black light so you can see her moving around in a black light and then burn her because she is still photo sensitive. The black light keeps her corporeal, and the light burns her like it did when she was alive.

Might be picky but the black light allows them to see her but it doesn't harm her because it's not UV light. I don't remember every instance of light but it would explain why she could appear with candles? And maybe some lights were UV and some not?

I don't like to have my horror movies spoiled too much and I plan to watch this one, as I'm a fan of the original short and it's creator. I don't need all my movies to be masterpieces, a nice shorter "fine" movie will do most of the time.

When the mother says to the ghost "If you hurt my kids I'll never speak to you again" I laughed out loud. It is one of the dumbest lines in cinema history. She should have said "If you hurt my children I'll destroy you," which would have nicely foreshadowed the ending. Why do these movies so often screw up the simplest things?

It was also heavily re-edited before it's theatrical release (and apparently, akin to HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, the prosthetic creature was replaced by CGI). There is a scene or two in the trailers that are not in the movie (like a scene where the characters are going down a hallway that is only lit on the right side, with the Tooth Fairy following them on the left side).
