Here's a different explanation for the ending. It was just a 'reflection' in the father's eyes, so he was seeing Alton, and Alton shined light at him. This tells us that Alton didn't die, and is looking back through from the other dimension, thanking his dad. For the father, this means his sacrifice was worthwhile as he did save his son. I don't think the father has these abilities, he is more like 'Joseph' but he knew his son was special so he supported him away from the cult, to the destination location. Because the boy was the first person to be able to join the spirit dimension, he can now help humankind The dimension containing the light spirits is probably where human cultures had got the concepts for the 'gods' and 'angels' What do you reckon foundflix?

Alton said that "they" have been watching us for a very long time......is it possible that Alton's father could be one of those watchers, existing in a physical form like Alton is, and he is simply guiding Alton back to where he belongs? Where they BOTH belong? Because......how could an interdimensional being "accidently" be born into our dimension when he belongs in the other one? Like you said, genes and bloodlines. His parents, or at least his father, belongs there too. The only information we have about the father is that he and Lucas were friends before his parents took him to the Ranch. But on the Ranch, there were no images or icons of any kind of Christian denomination (crosses, portraits, altars, etc.). There aren't even any (visible) shrines or dedications to Alton, who they claim is their "savior". Could it be that the people of this Ranch were harboring these beings like Alton for generations? Why did the pastor, a very minor character, need to adopt Alton two years prior? That seems like a very significant story point. What part has the Ranch played for all these years? It didn't spring up around Alton, it's been there for decades. Also, it is notable that hundreds, possibly thousands or tens of thousands or more people saw the buildings in the other dimension. So it wasn't an isolated incident and it couldn't possibly be covered up by anyone. It changed the way of life for the entire human race for the rest of the future. And the Ranch citizens said during their interviews that Alton was their salvation. So is it possible that there were others like Alton (to a much lesser degree of power), or people of mixed blood like his father, who were supposed to go into the other dimension also? We could also talk about ancient history and prophecy like you did in the video. They are an ancient race that advanced and evolved beyond us. You could link this to ancient alien threads, but also include the idea that the Bible, Quran, and other ancient religious texts talk about advanced "heavenly" races breeding with humans, and similarly in the Bible, it says there will be a New Jerusalem and a New Heaven and New Earth and that only certain "special people" will be allowed in to parts of it. Because now, the rest of the planet and humanity forever indisputably know that there is life beyond this, our mortal coil, basically undoing all of the established religions and institutions we know. So there are is literally a new idea of Heaven and Earth. OR maybe......since his father witnessed this new world and in a way lives in both of them (by proxy of Alton), is he starting to advance beyond mundane humanity and is evolving into the new humanity that he saw with his own eyes and was inspired in him by his son? Same with Lucas and Alton's mother. Their faith was rewarded, now Lucas is a prisoner and Sarah is a fugitive, but they are both at peace with the new direction their lives are going in because they saw and felt what they needed to see and feel in order to grow and evolve into a better form of human. Or what if his glowing eyes was just an artistic way of expressing the love and connection a father has with his son? I think I should go to bed now...

Very well put and explained. Those are awesome theories and I agreed and thought the same in everything you said. The film has many messages and ideas but I tend to lean more toward the anti religious spiritual metaphors because of interviews of the director himself saying he is very spiritual.

Or, could be that the mother was a slut and when some other dimension dude sneaked out in this world for fun at a bar, altons mom slept with him,. Regarding the glow in Roy, altons fathers eyes at the very end, I' 100%sure that he just saw the evolved glowing people in the distance and knowing that his son has reached where he belongs and is safe, he gives a pleasant smile.. only if he knew that it wasnt his son and just a bastard. SIgh,,

Nicholas Scott I think the Ranch is just used as a conduit to get the point across that the story is a spiritual metaphor. The absence of "concrete" symbols keeps the movie free so that you can view it from a spiritual level. The light is God. This other world is a type of heaven. The father has hope. Imo, it's analogous to someone dying (the son) and yet knowing (the father knowing) they are still there in another dimension. Very Biblical in its constant use of light.

I find it interesting how well your opening fits with this movie. And how meta it was. You completely broke the fourth wall in so many ways. "I can now show you the secrets of the universe." Then you proceed to break it again with the help of the monitors. "Thats impressive!" Because we don't fully understand how you're doing these things. Which plays a part in this movie.

Hmm.. possible theory.... Roy and (Dunst's Character) are both descendants of the ancient Race and Alton has the powers from their combined bloodlines (Recessive Genes that have birthed Alton into a greater power then either of his parents could have). In the end Roy's exposure to his sons strength has woken up his own (although weak) powers/abilities.

@salan1able
@salan1able 8 жыл бұрын
It could literally mean anything. And "Very Long time" is relative, they could of just been watching his family since the kid was born. Also, as the plot hole is so massive there would be nothing stoping us from saying that they were all just on drugs. And even if they were extra dimensional beings what reason do they have to pull the kid away from his famaily? ..........Stranger danger.
@treyspells
@treyspells 7 жыл бұрын
The only thing I could think of , is them wanting to take the kid away from his family because of the way he is. Well in this type of research that I've done, it is ongoing research that species and spirits are still trying to figure out, is how to make the human body immortal using spirit and body. Meaning the kid was probably going to still be experimented on, even in that dimension. So he was probably never actually safe but more on a different level than the Gov. doing it... I think I worded that right..

Trey Spells see the thing I think they meant with “they have been watching us for a very long time” is that it is dimensional because the fourth dimension is time after all so what he could mean is that these same people could have been watching us for millions of years and that’s what started the religions revolving around heaven god and other more advanced beings this could just be the bi product of this civilization dropping by every few thousand years
@voice-less
@voice-less 5 жыл бұрын
@@daijurin4905 not really,the fourth dimension isn't time,time is another kind of dimension,there are temporal dimensions,and spacial dimensions,those beings were from the 4th spacial dimension,which actually makes sense,since they have built their civilization on top of ours,and they have an entire new spacial dimension that we can't see to do that to make it simple,image a plane,a 2D surface,where beings can only move in two direction,they could also build cities of their own,but 2D cities,and we as 3D beings,we could literally build an entire civilization on top of their 2D surface,and they would never know,the same is with us and these creatures

It shows all difficulties for families who grow children with eceptional Psy skills in 70s and today. If you want to know more details picked in this movie I can reveal all informations.

Probably a lot of people in the comments have no clue what starman even is. Too young obviously. But i agree with your comment. Imo midnight special was great and i too looked at it like a starman sequel but a reboot too, if that makes sense. It had elements of both is a better way to say it i guess.

The scene where the grass starts “yellowing” all around him.... My take on that.... Alton was dehydrated and in desperate need of water. His hands were placed on the grass; so, I think he was drawing the surrounding moisture from the grass and absorbing it through his palms. Dried-out grass turns yellow, right?

At the very end of the movie when Alton's dad is at the prison looking at the sun his eyes slightly light up and then return back to normal. Alton's dad is one of the people from the other dimension. This is why Alton has his powers because he's half human half other dimensional being.

Seamus McCloud his eyes did not light up except the typical reflection from looking toward the sun, which is light. Where did anyone come up with the dad's eyes glowing? You're missing the point. The dad is looking "into the light", knowing his son is there. This is a spiritual metaphor. The cult is there to get the point across of the spiritual significance.

knowledgetracker Whoa dude you are really trying to make your point across. It was just a theory because it looked like his eyes lit up like Alton's which would make sense considering how, ya know, Alton's like half other dimensional being. You did make a good point though but next time, don't sound duchy when trying to make your point across.

I suspect that the 'others' and Alton are more a reference to transcendence or realization of further human potential - consider the mythologies about the Mayan cultures 'vanishing' sometimes attributed to a transcendence . Alton is born (human) with a natural ability to transcend and therefore is able to show humanity the potential which his father is then, at the end, shown to begin realizing. This fits with the allegory in the film of the importance of parents being willing to support and release their children to express their own natural potentials rather than making them into what they (the parents or culture) want them to be. I feel this film should have come with a warning label - Watch Multiple Times! Though I truly enjoyed the first watch I found it to be a deeply textured work and feel I gained full appreciation once I'd watched it more than once. Beautiful if you let yourself connect emotionally! I feel a little saddened that some have described Midnight Special as emotionally flat - perhaps with all the big special effects movies now days we have grown too used to obvious, simplistic expression of emotion.

Oh - and the grass dies (not ripples), it can be seen again around the father's feet when he carries Alton out to the sunrise AND it looks like the father is in distress because Alton is drawing on his energy too before the sun comes up.

LOL - took me a little while to see it too! I didn't pick up that the ground broke along ley lines - pretty cool! I think I was the 'light beings' that guided Alton to the cave though (so not ley lines there) also I assume it would have been them that provided the March 6th date to Alton. Lastly it's a salt water marsh land not wheat fields.

I ran out of internet yesterday so I watched a movie that I downloaded 3 years ago. It’s called “I Origins”. In the middle of the movie a girl says “if worms only have two senses (smell and touch) they only knows darkness, they just can’t understand the concept of light. But not because they can’t perceive it means it doesn’t exist”. She actually didn’t say that exactly but that was the metaphor behind. Now, the next day I decide to watch another movie. I came up with this title “Midnight Special” and I had no clue what this is about. I still can’t believe the relation between these 2 movies.
