Call me an idiot, but I think this looks better than the aquanaut. On top of that, it’s a precursor to the aquanaut that many don’t know of. It’s the case of “expensive being the first” 😂

Not idiot at all. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and all watches have merit. But I respectfully disagree. If the hour markers were bigger, it would be perfect. I feel it has a bit of negative space on the dial. I'm hoping to get an aquanaut one day 😆 Thanks for the support!

i got the gray and the blue one both steel breclet and got an extra orange and blue rubber band , all that for 2000 euro in total, its an amazing combination and really good price, the watch is great and feels good on the wrist, the only down side that i have is, thatt putting the rubber band is not that easy, it takes a few minutes and some pressure, other than that, a great watch.

I really like this watch but I have two things stopping me from buying it. 1 is I’ve heard of the date function breaking on some pretty quickly. How is yours holding up? 2 is how do you think these macro shots are for the price? Is this much dust expected in a $1200 watch? Thank you!
@hand.wound.horology10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. I owned the watch for 6 months and have since moved it along. Something about the dials appearance didn't gel with me. Only one time when the date changed overnight that the discs didn't fully change to the next date. I had to wind it manually to get done correctly. For the macro shots I used a camera phone to capture it which may not be the best quality. But the dust is minimal and definitely can't be seen with the naked eye.

Quality made outside. Average in design. A beautiful date complication. But obsolete movement. All mechanical movements are trash and should be a thing of the past. For museums only. Budget friendly? At $1.200? LOL No. Because of the mechanical movement, it's absolutely worthless. If it'd be a quartz inside, I guess $400 would be a fair price, and just because of the brand name. Otherwise, at that price point, there are Citizens and Casios which are far better and more advanced.

Thanks for your input/insight. Great thing about watch collecting is everyone has their own preferences and opinions. For me. I like mechanical/automatic movements as they are one of the rare things in life that can last a lifetime (arguably if this piece can last that long) and is not powered by a battery. These days everything is replaced on an annual basis. But watches can be your companion for a lifetime and you can build a bond and pass it down. Budget friendly is subjective. Here in Australia it is easy to get this piece for up to 25% off which to me is great value. Which watches would you recommend over this watch? Would love to hear it. Thanks for watching 👍
@damyr Жыл бұрын
@@hand.wound.horology I agree that planned obsolescence in modern world is very annoying and practically a scam, but that's not really a point when comparing watch movements, because if a mechanical watch can last you for a life time, a quartz one can last for at least 2 life times. Quartz is superior to mechanical movements in literally every way possible. Except that it demands a battery change every several years (or decades, if solar). But that's still not a downside, because changing a battery is a 5 minute process, and mostly a DIY project, and in the meantime, mechanical watches demand servicing, which is not only time consuming, but also can be pretty expensive (depending of a brand). Btw, I believe I don't need to explain other advantages of quartz over mechanical mvmt... as accuracy, practicality, weight and thickness (or rather lack of those), better endurance and resistance to damage and overall reliability... So, in this day and age, if we can deem planned obsolescence as a type of scam, then mechanical watches are a scam and a half. Further more, watch industry is the only industry in existence where the most advertised, most prominent, most luxurious and the most expensive products are of the worst quality...because of that lousy mechanical parts. But it's interesting how many people (watch lovers) are so blind to those facts. Why is that? It's precisely because it's a scam. Imagine if you'd have 2 versions of this Mido... A mechanical and a quartz one. Which one would you choose? Any sane person would choose a quartz one, because of facts mentioned above. But there's no such choice, isn't it? If you want a famous/expensive/luxury/heritage brand name on your wrist, you are rarely to find one with a quartz movement (a few Citizen or GS or Casio). That's because such watches are not as profitable as mechanical ones. You can charge a mechanical mvmt as much as you want, and you can also calculate in the profit out of servicing them for decades in the future. That's why. And that's exactly the reason why you, and many other watch enthusiasts, think of quartz watches as some kind of cheap, expendable products... Even when the truth and the logic can't be more opposite than it is. There could be quartz Rolexes (like in 70es when they thought they are done with mechanical mvmts during the quartz crisis), but there are no any today. That's worth for every other big brand, even microbrands. It's simply a scam, and people still fall for it. Now, regarding some great quartz models... Look up for some Citizen (like Chronomaster), some Grand Seiko (not a spring drive, because it's simply not a true quartz) and always god tier Casio/G-shock (from $10-$5k). From a classic looking (analog) watches, I personally like Casio Oceanus. Now that's a true affordable watch (around $500 for basic models), which can match more expensive/luxury watches in construction and precision of its external built and details. Plus, its internals (movement) are not just much better, but literally infinitely better than all mechanical mvmts ever made, combined. Btw, Citizen Chronomaster is also a beautiful watch. Some Bulovas maybe. An Omega or two... But there's definitely not much choice as within their mechanical counterparts. Which is a shame. A big shame.

Man love your response and what a great topic of discussion. There is no denying that quartz movements pro's outweigh mechanical movements. Even though my preference is for mechanical. I don't "hate" quartz watches. They just don't appeal to me. It's like people's taste in foods, fashions or sporting teams etc. Owning a mechanical watch knowing that 100s of hours of watch making. Strong heritage and timeless design has come into it are the main appeal to me. Just like your significant other. You love them for one thing and who they are and are willing to overlook some of their short comings. 😅 It is like wearing a work of art on your wrist. And I appreciate the craftsmanship. Both type of watches have their pros. Quartz in accuracy and robustness. Mechanical in finishing and decorating. Both watches have their target market and they both have merit.
@damyr Жыл бұрын
@@hand.wound.horology I mean, I get it that you like heritage and timeless design. I do respect those characteristics as well (more or less). But that's not a point at all, because every quartz watch can posses the same quality of finishing and details, just like any mechanical one. For instance, look at this Mido. Its design, finishing and details are impeccable. But who said the same watch, with quartz movement, couldn't be at the same level of craftsmanship? So, I'm not sure if we are on the same page here. If not, what's left? The continuous sweeping of the second hand maybe? Well, that Mido could also have a hi-beat quartz, with a sweeping second hand, which no mechanical movement can ever match. Or maybe you're thinking of its internals, in the shape of cogs, wheels and springs? Tho, that's just a personal and absolutely subjective feeling. I mean, do you actually ever see the movement in that watch? And btw, I hope I won't disappoint you when I say that all those Swiss big brands are not producing their mechanical movements by hands... It's all just stamped out metal, made by robotic machines. And that's what I'm talking about... The big brand industry itself made quartz watches seem cheap and not as attractive. It's literally a scam. If you still don't believe it's a scam, just try to compare it with any other industry. For instance cars... We have luxury car brands. But their most expensive models are in every way superior to average cars, aren't they? You don't have a Rolls Royce/Mercedes/Bugatti which is not faster, generally better in driving, with overall better build, and with plethora of premium details than an average Joe's car. But in the watch industry it's the other way around... The most premium/luxury watches look more fancier (intentionally), but are less durable, less accurate, more sensitive and more prone to damage. So, compared to car industry, they literally produce bad quality products and sell it as a peak of technology. Can you see what I'm aiming at? I apologize if I wasn't clear enough and if I'm being annoying. I'm just frustrated with so much offering in high end watch models (big brands as well as microbrands), but mostly with bad quality (because all mechanical mvmts are nothing but bad quality). If I want to pay premium, I want a premium product, not some obsolete trash from past centuries. It's like I'm trying to pay top money for a premium/luxury car, but instead of it I get a stage coach from the 18th century. Am I suppose to be happy with that? But a stage coach is more romantic. It gives you a feeling of a superior craftsmanship and art... Just no! There's literally no logic in that. Give me a superior car mechanics and then we can talk about additional fancy details and finishing. I really hope that's clear enough.
@hand.wound.horology Жыл бұрын
@damyr I understand your point loud and clear. The watch industry is quite niche and I don't think it's comparable to the automotive industry. And it's not for everyone I get it. Only in the watch industry would you pay higher price for a movement that is not as accurate or where steel cost more than gold. But I'm not spending 10k+ on a watch with my main concern being accuracy/durability. I have my g shock for that. What draws me in is owning a relic from the past which is a part of history. Seeing how watch makers solved everyday world problems when the technology we have today was not available. I guess maybe its similar to vintage cars which command a high premium. They don't make them like they use to any more. Being able to see the heart of the watch moving and able to wind and interact with the watch is something special. When I want the latest technology. I'm buying a smart phone, tablet, cars or figurine collectables. But for watches I'm buying for the heritage, finishing, history and craftsmanship. Good day sir 🙏
