My favorite thing with Midway was people saying the scene with Bruno Gaido jumping in a plane and using the tail gun to shoot at a suiciding Japanese bomber was "unrealistic" and "Hollywood" yet it 100% happened and Gaido got a promotion directly from Admiral Halsey for having such balls.

There hasn't been a conflict in human history as ballsy as World War 2, ever before or since. The amount of sheer unrequited ballsiness to dive vertically in an aircraft directly into explosive artillery fire and drop bombs while flying at like 260 miles an hour has not been seen since. WW2 soldiers were absolutely incredible. Build different, without a doubt.

Well I'll disagree. Going face to face with a man in a sword fight was a whole different level of savagery. You felt when the sword dealt the death blow. You heard his pain and screams. WW2 soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines had balls of steel for sure. But stabbing a guy was a different level of savagery. I'll ask that you look at the Battle of Alesia and see what the Romans and Celts did and what was accomplished it was savagery and impressive. And didn't occur at 260mph

@@samarkand1585 ACTUALLY there is only about 20-30 seconds of rough footage of them diving, which is cut in and out of, so who is to say, on top of the 20-30 seconds, where each segment starts and the previous ends. The SBD Dauntless dove from about 8,000+ feet, and with dive brakes deployed, which you can see that they are in the footage, they would be diving at a speed of about 260 mph. 260 mph is 380 feet per second, 8000 feet divided by 380 feet per second is 21 seconds, SO YES INCLUDING THE 20 SECOND LONG DIVE. I love this movie, but unfortunately it falls prey to the idea that the japanese were seconds away from launching a counterattack, which if you see the recon photos (easily found in operation shattered sword, which talks about the fact they weren't close to counterattacking) shows that there are in fact no planes on deck.

I, too, had to dislike this video. There was a total lack of diversity of the pilots portrayed in this film, being all white cis males with toxic masculinity. I also found the overwhelmingly Asian portrayal as antagonists to be very racist and offensive. 🤡

I thought the movie makes it clear the planes were still below decks being rearmed

…did you miss the part of them moving them to the hanger to change munitions and fuel-up? it’s a pivotal point, they don’t do that ON DECK but it was happening

There are indeed planes on the deck during the actual battle, as those planes in the deck are part of the Japanese CAP (Combat Air Patrol) that was tasked to defend the carriers.

I encourage anyone watching to read up on the actual battle of midway. Reality can be crazier than fiction and the sheer bravery of the us airmen on that day astounds me.

The SBD dove @ aprox.70 degree angle the bomb crutch swung it away from the plane so it would miss the prop.
