@hotwax93766 жыл бұрын
I do. And it's interesting to note that Disney had collaborated The Jim Henson Company and Lucasfilms for a number of years before purchasing either one (the Indiana Jones Adventure ride at Disneyland is a good example of this). In fact, Jim Henson was himself an admirer and fan of Disney and was in talks with them to potentially purchase his studio at the time of his death. That original plan fell through because Eisner and the rest of Disney's top guns wanted the deal to include the rights to Sesame Street, which Henson and his company steadfastly refused to allow. Since Disney did eventually purchase The JHC, I kind of wish they would make some sort of work that involves Mickey and Kermit in some sort of partnership--perhaps cohosts for a TV special of some sort?
@allisonwillett62516 жыл бұрын
That would be so amazing. I really wish the muppets were more popular they're so charming
@MrFreedomFries6 жыл бұрын
Interesting take. I didn't know that about the Sesame Street characters being the reason it fell through. Just to be clear (and a little bit be "that guy"). Disney bought the Muppets (excluding Sesame characters) not the Jim Henson Company. The JHC is still owned and run by Henson's kids. I think Mickey and Kermit would be hard to put directly together. Kermit shouldn't be animated, and the Kermit walk around is terrifying. I also don't think it would work to make a Mickey Mouse Muppet. What Disney should do is release seasons 4 and 5 of the Muppet Show!
@MrFreedomFries6 жыл бұрын
I honestly hope not. Sesame while able to generate income, is still largely an educational enterprise. Disney is a company. The stated goals for each are different, and Sesame's goals would be subsumed if they came under the House of Mouse.

The Power Rangers story is particularly interesting, because Disney struggled to fit the brand into their portfolio--contrast that to Marvel (and then Star Wars), and how Disney keeps their core identities the same. Power Rangers also set a standard for branding--it wasn't "Disney's Power Rangers"--but they published the DVDs, it crept into Disney Stores and parks--it was a learning process.

Stuff like this makes me sad. At least corporate American had shareholders who could vote and be heard. Ninja Master BINGO. The controlling majority share holds tend to be a small number of entities forcing the rank and file shareholders simply along for the ride. Because wealth begets wealth and the regulatory agencies being intentionally underfunded and defanged, the wealth accumulation grows. Add to that the wealthy own the legislature, they get copyright law extended again and again to retain their ownership of key assets instead of letting them into the public domain. The roses run the hen houses and continue to amass wealth and control past the point of any real competition. This isn’t capitalism, it’s crony cartels bartering who won trolls which part of the market.

Rob, I'm curious to know what your opinion of Eisner is. I don't know much about his tenure, but to me it seems almost like he felt he was a spiritual successor to Walt. He was making himself out to be the public face of the company in the way Walt was with hosting TV shows. Do you think that he was emotionally tied to the company?
@MidwaytoMainStreet6 жыл бұрын
I'll say this, he absolutely was trying to make himself out as the spiritual successor to Walt and I do believe that HE believed he was the next Walt. That said, I think he was far from the next Walt. He was definitely creatively minded for an executive, but there was so much more of a business mind there than Walt ever had. Personally I find him to be a really interesting figure because while many try to paint him as black and white, there were so many shades of gray. He totally helped turn around the Disney company in the 1980s and I think it's safe to say that Disney is around today BECAUSE of the work of Eisner and Wells. His singles and doubles approach to the box office was exactly what they needed at the time, and his decision to lean hard into the theme park business gave us the Walt Disney World we know and love today. If you compare WDW from 1984 to WDW today, it's so insanely different. That said, his best work was done when he had a series of check and balances in place and when circumstances forced him to think creatively. Once Disney did turn it around and he managed to wrestle near complete control of the company, partially due to the death of Wells, that's when he started to make mistakes. It could be said that his hubris is what lead to his falling out with Katzenberg, which cost Disney a valuable mind. It's also what lead to his falling out with Steve Jobs, which nearly cost Disney a future with Pixar. I also think that with age he began to lose touch of what people wanted in media, and he began to fall for the idea of big budget tentpole films after warning against them just 10-15 years before. All in all, he was talented and smart and did a lot for the Disney company, but it felt like he overstayed his welcome by about 7-10 years. Disney was lifted to a whole new level and it was time for a new CEO to step in and approach the company with a new outlook.
@devinsweeting49786 жыл бұрын
You know. I think Disney would have done well if they had a duo like Walt and Roy. One was the creative Imaginator, the face of the company. While the other managed the business side of things. The money, the stocks, the shareholders. You know stuff like that.

It really is fascinating to see how the Walt Disney Company has been on the brink so many times, yet always seems to survive. It makes me wonder, and fear, a time in the future when they may not be so lucky. I hope that never comes to pass, but you just never know. I think my biggest concern at this time is if they are over-extending themselves by purchasing and investing in so many IPs. I worry about the possibility that Marvel, Pixar or Lucas film will someday want to split away from Disney and if they do, that could have a terrible impact on the company as a whole and all of the lands and attractions that they are building based on films from those studios. Well, enough with the doom and gloom, great video as usual Rob!

It's so weird, but around 2005, Disney literally was very unprofitable and the theme parks were losing money. It's crazy to think how Disney was able to become successful, purely on their successful movie franchises and very smart subsequent acquisitions (Marvel, Star Wars).

revolving, Pixar is now a subsidiary of Disney and completely owned by Disney. They don't have a contract with Disney, they are a part of Disney. Pixar as an independent entity doesn't exist anymore. The only way Pixar could not be part of Disney is if some other company offers to buy Pixar's name from Disney itself.
@srayj6 жыл бұрын
matter pal thanks for clarifying. I know they can’t just leave, but if Disney was overextended, they could consider selling off properties, which would still result in the issue of lands and attractions having to be re-themed.

So Disney buys all this land in ready creek and at the beginning they only have plans for magic kingdom, contemporary and Polynesian resorts and eventually Epcot. So why build the new park at the far north end of their property, miles away from the freeway and separated from the car park and roads by a huge lagoon. Almost everything they've built since seems to be clustered far closer to the freeway and central Orlando in the south of all their land. Is there any reason for the isolation of the magic kingdom and would you do a video on it.

Two Roys. Walt's brother was Roy O Disney. Roy O had a son who was also named Roy (Roy E Disney).

Disney should buy Comcast, that would be funny.
@doubleflores83505 жыл бұрын
c0mpu73rguy that would seem unlikely though, given how Comcast surprisingly has more money than Disney when it comes to Revenue. Comcast is too big of a corporation for Disney to buy. Thank goodness.

It's funny now because Disney is once again in financial trouble. Although I don't think universal could buy them out like they could back then. I could see Netflix or apple buying them though.
