5 Examples of Disney Ride "Sequels"

Originally I was going to take that and make a video posing the question of why we don’t see the attraction equivalent of movie sequels, but then the more I thought about it the more I realized we have. Not direct sequels in the way A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back are sequels, but spiritual successors that carry on the theme and goal of an original ride. Some might be intentional, perhaps some are accidental, but either way, here are five examples of Disney ride sequels.

Let’s jump into the first example, which is Mostano’s House of the Future in Tomorrowland at Disneyland, and the Dream Home exhibit at Innoventions in Disneyland. The House of the Future opened in 1957 and offered guests a look into what home life in the future would look like in 1986. It stood in Disneyland for just over ten years and was closed at the end of 1967. Over 40 years later in 2008, Disney opened the Innoventions Dream Home which featured a number of high tech devices that were built into the various rooms of the house to give us a glimpse of what a technologically cutting edge house would look like.
Next up is Adventure Thru Inner Space in Disneyland and Body Wars in Future World. This 1967 Tomorrowland attraction, also sponsored by Monsanto, was an omnimover ride in which scientists shrank guests down so that they could explore and experience a snowflake all the way down to its subatomic scale. The ride would close 18 years later, and just four years after that it’s spiritual successor, Body Wars, would open at the Wonders of Life Pavilion in Epcot. Similarly, Body Wars was a ride in which scientists shrank the guests down.
This next one is the Carousel of Progress and Horizons. This pair is a spiritual successor of a different sort. While the previous two were a revisiting of the same concept in a new way, Horizons was said to be a continuation of the Carousel of Progress. The Carousel of Progress was designed to show us how human innovation has improved our lives in the past, with its last scene covering the present or near it. Horizons was a similar concept that faced forward and showed us how human innovation could improve our lives well into the future. Some even say that the sequel status is strengthened by the fact that both attractions focus on this theme through the lens of a family dynamic. There’s even a few callback, with Horizons using the theme song of the Carousel, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.”
This next pair is interesting because while they’re both Disney attractions, the original was never a Disneyland or Disney World attraction. I’m talking about Ford’s Magic Skyway from the 1964 New York World’s Fair and World of Motion at Epcot. Like the Carousel of Progress, Ford’s Magic Skyway was one of the four attractions developed by Disney for the New York World’s Fair. If you want to learn more about the fair, I have a mini-series that covers the history of each of the four attractions. The Magic Skyway was a slow moving ride that predated the modern omnimover system. It took guests back in time to the days of the dinosaur. From there it progressed through history to the introduction of mankind and its various advancements, including harnessing fire and inventing the wheel before jumping ahead to a futuristic city filled with advanced cars. It was the only World’s Fair Attraction to not make it back to a Disney park, but 17 years later it’s spiritual successor, World of Motion, would open in Epcot.
Last but not least is the pair I feel most deserving of the title of spiritual successor, and that’s Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln from Disneyland and The Hall of Presidents in Liberty Square. Beyond their obvious connection of focusing on a theme of the office of the president, there’s a historical connection linking them together. In 1956, years before the creation of Great Moments for the New York World’s Fair, Walt Disney had planned a new area for Main Street called Liberty Street. It would be a representation of colonial America that featured a show called “One Nation Under God” in which guests would get to see robotic recreations of every US president. The technology for such an idea just wasn’t feasible at the time, and so the idea was ultimately shelved.
It was revived nearly a decade later when Walt would create an animatronic show for the World’s Fair. The technology was now possible, but due to time and resource constraints, the idea was cut down from representing every US president, to just one, Abraham Lincoln. Years later imagineers were finally able to follow-up on Great Moments, and in 1971 the Hall of Presidents would open, featuring every US president, just like Walt originally wanted.

I would add that I left off re-themes and updates from this list as I felt they weren't sequels as much as updates. I also excluded case where the same ride was built in a second park.

Updates, though, sometimes are explicitly *titled* like movie sequels. For example, Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, or Space Mountain: Mission 2 at Disneyland Paris.

You could also say the Flying Saucers ride at Disneyland and Luigi's Flying Tires at DCA could be a "sequel" but we all know how that ended lol great video man!

I was gonna mention this one. Flying Tires was intended as a tribute/homage or 'sequel' to the Flying Saucers. I went on the Luigi ride and it was okay I guess, but the movement was a little sluggish.

I got another a few Peter Pan's Flight and Soarin'. Peter Pan was created as a way to fly through London and to Neverland, however the idea was perfected in Soarin' which took rather than a dark ride approach, a simulator. Another one, Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland and Big Thunder Mountain. Now on top of the Rainbow Ridge theme in Disneyland, these two rides are both mine trains in the southwest. Matterhorn Bobsleds and Expedition Everest. Expedition is a leveled up Matterhorn with a yeti in the Forbidden Mountain, rather than an abominable snowman family like in the Matterhorn. My last is the Disneyland Monorail and the Peoplemover. In Disneyland besides the stop for the Disneyland hotel, the Monorail was not a transportation system, but rather an attraction of transportation of the future. The Peoplemover was this idea but centered around travel through Tomorrowland with newer magnet technology while the Monorail was traditional train technology.

I decided for this list to opt out of examples where it's just an update/re-theme of the currently existing ride mechanic (similarly why I left out instances like Rocket to the Moon and Mission to Mars). I had this whole list of the rules I set for myself at the start of the video, but I felt it ended up dragging the video needlessly so I ended up cutting it.

I would like to argue that Test Track is also a spiritual successor to world of motion. Even though it's not about all kinds of vehicles, Test Track at least keeps the same theme of exploring what vehicles are capable of. At least with the new update it offers the chance for guests to be creative since it offers less in the way of education.

@srayj
@srayj 5 жыл бұрын
Michelle Clark but those are copies of ride technology whereas Rob is focusing on the story being told. If we were to talk about sequels through the ride style, then almost all Fantasyland dark rides would be sequels of each other, Pirates and Small World would be, Radiator Springs Racers would be a sequel to Test Track...etc. Even though the same technology is being utilized, the stories of the attractions aren’t connected, so they don’t count as sequels based on the rules Rob set for himself.

So this is a bit of a random question but I thought you'd be able to answer this question very well. So since Bob Iger is rumored to step down soon and even further rumored to be running for president in 2020 how do you think he would be as president based off his career as Disney's CEO? Not trying to evoke anything political just genuinely curious. As always thank you for the great content!
@MidwaytoMainStreet
@MidwaytoMainStreet 6 жыл бұрын
To avoid sparking anything, I'd probably avoid this as a video. However I'm totally willing to answer here: Personally speaking, I don't want to see someone who is primarily a businessman running this country, regardless of what side of the aisle they're on. A CEO's job is to maximize a business' revenues and profits, and that takes a very different mindset than what's required to run a nation and govern it's people in a fair and morally sound way. If he wanted to get into the world of politics by running for office somewhere smaller first, then build up the experience and mindset to eventually run for President that'd be one thing, but I think going straight from over a decade as a CEO to a US President is a recipe for disaster.

Why stop at Ride sequels? Going by the rules established in this video, Disney has made sequels to entire lands. Future World at Epcot was basically a sequel to Tomorrowland, and the entire Animal Kingdom park is a sequel to Adventureland. Which ulimately makes the "IPs will just make Epcot Magic Kingdom 2.0" argument pointless, because that's basically what it was already.

Just a minor bit of a wording error here. You refer to "A New Hope" and "The Empire Strikes Back" as sequels. A more accurate way to word this would be that The Empire Strikes Back was a sequel to the movie that is now referred to as A New Hope (That title did not exist when the first Star Wars movie was released). The existence of so-called "prequels" does not make the first Star Wars movie into a sequel. But of course I'm muddying the waters here, and that's part of the point. It would have been far less confusing to choose something not Star Wars related as your example. A phrasing such as: "...not direct sequels in the way that Rocky II was a sequel to Rocky..." would have been both accurate and less confusing. If you wanted to keep it in the Disney family you could have easily used the upcoming Frozen sequel as an example or the already existing Cars 2 & Cars 3. I know this is me being picky, but I also know you want all of your videos to be as good as they can be. Keep doing your great work! It was a really interesting video with a lot of wonderful footage!

Yeah poor wording on my part. I meant in the sense that Empire is a direct sequel of A New Hope.

I'm not looking forward to Trump's addition to the hall of presidents... maybe if they add him they can just make him say "fake news" and "China" a few times and then sit down...

I'm not either but I do think he should most definitely be a part of the show! He is after all our president. It's what he's gonna say that scares me. If he speaks how he does in real life, it won't be anything inspiring and positive, but if they write him a script that's more proper and diplomatic it won't be an accurate representation of the president for future generations to look back on.....I'm honestly torn.

Callie Myers they could probably find some inspirational quote or something. Or he could just have him saying one of his angry tweets and then Abe Lincoln grabs a hair drier and knocks of trumps wig

callanglas I mean sure, but I'm hoping they keep his speech short because most of his speeches are just... not memorable, not exciting, and not good, politically and structurally. It's kind of like having Andrew Jackson have a speech when people know he was a president who literally aided in the slaughter of thousands of indigenous people. He's extremely culturally insensitive, morally.. questionable, and it's in the back of everybody's mind. I know there's a lot of people who blindly support him without regards to what he's done in terms of aiding in racism, white supremacy, aversion towards LGBT people, and the destruction of the environment, but I just don't see him having some grand speech because he's just... not that person. Like I said, his speeches aren't good. So I'm just hoping they give him something short and to the point and be done.
