Installing a new barrel on a Remington 700 is a lot easier than it used to be. Using a pre-threaded and short chambered barrel by Shilen, this job is easily accomplished by hand using only an action wrench, barrel vise, finish reamer, T-handle, and some headspace gages. Watch along as Larry Potterfield, Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA, installs the barrel and lengthens the chamber to final dimension.

Larry, In past years I have purchased several Shilen barrels from Midway and I was very happy with them. The last 2 however were horible They were so rough inside the machining marks in the bore can be seen in cell phone photographs. I am not blaming Midway (I love you guys)I know it's Shilen's problem.

.william knox Nobody was a bigger fan of shillen than I was. I used them for 30+ years with GREAT results.The last 7 barrels changed all that. I had forgotten that I had 2 barrels on backorder from Midway. They showed up the other day and I looked them over. They looked horrible to me. When I ran a patch down the barrel I couldn't change direction. They were that rough.I returned them to Midway. I returned one barrel to Shilen from a previous build. I tried for over 400 rounds to break it in and that batch of barrels I requested and paid for extra hand lapping. I couldn't get it clean no matter what I tried. I thought it might be just a fluke so I called them to see if they could explain what happened .They won't even return my calls. I have a ton of guns out there with Shilen barrels that shoot GREAT but in the last year I have rebarreled 3 of my previous builds and have 3 more to do.

Maybe I am missing it, but where does this show the barrel and action meeting with the appropriate torque? Looks like you are just eye-balling with the final 1/8 inch adjustment?

That looks surprisingly easy, like too easy. Is it more work to change caliber while doing this?, or about the same amount and ease of work? Say going from .30-06 to 7mm Rem Mag or .300 Win Mag. I know the Savage 10/110 actions are easy to swap around but I always assumed the Rem 700 to be much more difficult for some reason. Is there a safety Hazzard or danger to not getting everything absolutely dead-on right when doing things?, or is the worst thing just a sloppy action or piss poor accuracy? Thanks! Btw, I LOVE these vids from Larry and Midway! 👍

Anthony Ridge he’s changing the depth of the chamber the caliber
@sjeverett75
@sjeverett75 7 жыл бұрын
whether or not you can just swap calibers depends on action and bolt face. example going from 308 to 243 or 270 to 30-06. first you need to make sure your current caliber and new caliber are same action then same bolt face or you will need a new one. other than that its the same since when you order the short chambered barrel you will specify the caliber you want.

Okay, so when installing the barrel for the final time, do you do ANYTHING to the threads? Oil them? Grease them? Anti-sneeze them? Lock tight them!? (These are jokes) Considering i dont see anything in my searching about doing anything to them, i assume you want to install the threads “dry” with nothing on them, and that “extra 1/8th turn” is the final torque factor. Very simple info i cant seem to find online at all. I know i may not get an answer, but its something im trying to figure out for reinstalling my winchester 1906 pump .22 rifle barrel. (Barrel was crooked, and is also shot out. But figured id get it back on straight till im ready to put on either a new barrel and sleeve the current one.)

Is this a normal thing, why would you wind up with a short chamber in the first place?
@mannequinfukr
@mannequinfukr Жыл бұрын
I see the comment is 5 years old but I'm pretty sure the short chamber is to prevent excessive headspace on a rifle where it would be probably perfect on one rifle

@austinblackman1359
@austinblackman1359 9 жыл бұрын
For lathes; The barrel is secured in a fixture and then placed in a lathe. The fixture has 8 bolts, 2 on each side. the barrel protrudes and thousands micrometers are uses to level it out within one thousands of an inch. Then, it's repeated with ten thousand micrometers. The reamer is then secured in a floating bit. Hand reaming; the reamer is attached to a rod, brass brushings are used to keep it center. It won't be as center or as precision as a lathe, and more time consuming but it's still good work.

"Indicators" not "micrometers".😉 And there are 4 screws on my outboard spider and 4 on my inboard spider(or 4 jaws) but i have used a cathead in the steady as well as an extended cathead in the 4 jaw to dial in really short barrels that wont reach through the headstock.
