A pattern stock is used in a stock duplicating machine to create the final stock of nearly final dimensions. This process allows the stock to first be shaped so that it perfectly fits the shooter before the final stock is carved from a stock blank. Take a look as Larry Potterfield, Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA, creates a pattern stock using a factory Remington 700 rifle stock, some files, bondo, and a bit of know-how.

This approach to a "dialed in" stock is the answer I have been looking for for some time. I have a sixties Ruger 44 mag carbine that I want to re-barrel to 20 inches and restock in a Mannlicher style stock. What is presented in this video is nothing less than a super slick way of getting the stock I am looking for in creating my "nearly perfect brush rifle" The sacrifice of the awful factory stock to serve as the bases of a Bondo pattern dream stock makes the silk purse from the sows ear. Thanks Larry for sharing, I appreciate it.

Simple the BEST!! I wish you lived in the UK. I believe we have the best "gun manufactures". However, you are certainly the best gunsmith I have seen but not known personally. Kind regards Phillip Gee

It is a machine that you put a pattern into and it will cut the copy while rotating the pattern and the copy simultaneously. On the pattern piece there is a ball or a wheel that tracks along and on the copy is a cutting bit. I hope they shot the duplicator in action for you to see. When you see it, everything makes sense, it's like, "oh, yeah".

It's a shame that you don't have many model 94, 30-30 offerings beyond sights. Specifically, rifle parts kits and bullets for reloading like bulk of the the Hornady 160 GR FTX. Just a better selection would make me want to use Midway for my of my 1894 projects and reloading. Great video.

If anyone but Larry Potterfield had presented this video, it would've been more authentic. In reality how Larry ends up with a pattern stock is to buy a company that already has hundreds of patterns, equipment to use them on, and more combined years of experience than Larry has lived! in this case that company was Reinhart Fajen!

That is really good work but with all your talent why didn’t you just build your own stock from scratch. Its not like you have alot of work being you own midway so I’m sure you can make the time to do so being what you just did took the same amount of time and you wont have to worry about being disappointed
