Served with you at Ellsworth AFB South Dakota when you was a Lieutenant - I was shooting alot then and still do - fired a 44 magnum in my Winchester Lever Action and split a case in half extracting the back half of a 44 magnum case - watched your video Larry Potterfield and I squirted in a penetrating oil and from the muzzle pushed thru a 45 cleaning bristle brush and it came right out - Been reloading and shooting for years (since 1973) and you taught me something - good for you! Good video Larry

Larry is a life saver. My DPMS got a broken piece stuck in the chamber today at the shooting range. Couldn't find a shell extractor locally other than at MidwayUSA which would be a 200 mile round trip. Decided to try his cleaning rod and brush method and it worked with a new brush. A used brush more than likely won't work as it didn't for me, too worn down. Either way, I have ordered a broken case extractor for future use but have never needed one before. Thanks Larry!

Some commenters are missing the point of this video. The idea behind using Cerrosafe is its' low melting point combined with its relative hardness. Plus, when cooled, it shrinks a tiny bit, making it easy it tap out as shown. Someone suggested using lead for this purpose. DON'T !!! Lead will stick in the chamber. Using Cerrosafe would work under field conditions, with some types of cigarette lighters as a heat source. You couldn't do that with lead.

Lead shrinks as it cools too. This is why Lee has to engineer their molds to drop over wanted size, in case someone casts too pure of an alloy. In fact it can shrink a few thousandths

My 1873 clone did just that with factory ammo. I have never seen that before, despite shooting (60yrs) ( and reloading for 35 years). All the pushing and pulling on that 44 mag with brushes and soak with k,,um penetrating oil even with shotgun brush-- no chance -- so I got the cerrosafe casted the chamber and put a steel rod down as you said exactly and popped out the broken casing. You cautioned against over filling, so I got the exact right amount and since it is a lever action used a funnel. Archimedes was right! I got lead on the bolt face as the tip of the funnel displaced some. RATS! I tried picks and all that saying to myself he told you not to do this! Then I remembered cerosafe has a low melting point and got the heat gun and Q-tips and it shoots like new. Thanks for all you do!

I find that using a brass brush, with several swabs around it, and lightly tapping it into the back of a necked cartridge can usually wedge into the cartridge, and then be pulled right back out aloing with the stuck casing. Bit quicker than going out and buying some metal to cast. But thanks for this great tip, as I'm sure I'll eventually get one stubborn enough that my swab method won't work.

These methods work very well also for reloading sizing dies if you don't use enough lube or the die is cut too undersized due to a worn tool (a problem I had on my first RCBS die set that I never had with LEE. One reason I will never go back to RCBS as far as dies).
@jolebole-yt Жыл бұрын
I had a set of 30-06 Redding dies that were out of spec. Specially the sizing die. The cases would not pass the chamber gauge no matter how many times I tried to resize them. Never had a problem like this with my Lee dies.
@DaveSmith-cp5kj Жыл бұрын
@@jolebole-yt It's weird because LEE is so much cheaper.

I find a tap that will thread inside the case without touching the chamber. Usually it will break the case loose just threading it in, or you can tap it out with a cleaning rod. I use this same method for a stuck case in a sizing die, but insert a bolt, then draw it out with a sleeve and the threads
@BelloBudo0079 жыл бұрын
As a non shooter, I'll be honest and admit that I would never had known how to extract that cartridge. Thanks to you though, I reckon I'd have a go and several of those options without concerning myself about damaging the rifle, and probably stop short of the molten metal option. In which case I guess it would be off to the gunsmith for me.

@tetekofa Yeah! Kroil's great stuff. I picked up an SVT-40 a couple years ago, which had an unfortunately heavily corroded bore, and after repeated cleaning with CLP, I couldn't make much of a difference. Just a few minutes with Kroil and it was looking pretty nice. I tried the same thing on an old Mauser that was awaiting a .35 Wheelen rebarreling, same results, and now I'll need another Mauser for my project.

You are going to have to find disasembly instructions for that rifle, and take it apart far enough to get the parts out of the way that are blocking the chamber. Once oyu do that i'd think the empty case will come right out with a cleaning rodt, unless its corroded in place now.

Mr Potterfield Well done. To the point. Ingenious. I have a not too similar problem. I have a 12ga shotgun with 10 adapters ranging from common handgun rounds all the way to .30-30 and .45-70. The problem is that the spent cartridges are the very devil to get out of the adapter. ( not to mention the adapters themselves).Of course I can knock them out with a cleaning rod, twist them out with pliers, or pry them out with a knife blade, but all of this reduces me to civil war era reload times. Can you Macgyver me out of this one? Thanks in advance.

Now for an EASY way which I have done over the years.. Take a fired case cut the head off so you can find the right fine threaded tap that fits and not cut thru the case wall.. 10/32 1/4 -28 or a metric .. run the tap into the broken case in rifle then tap it out with a cleaning rod....
@Koensdus6 жыл бұрын
..and in case you can't get your hands on Cerrosafe alloy: cut the hex-head off a timber screw (12-11 for my .22 hornet), weld to 5 mm rod, remove the bolt, insert, lightly screw into the broken cartridge until it grabs ...and extract!
