So much of this is my mom and her side of the family. They always pull the "Depression era" card and "Child of Depression era parents" cards respectively in order to defend it and then say why "they can't help it". When it doesn't work, they resort to saying "I just don't want to be wasteful! Look at all this perfectly good food/insert things/object(s) here" commentary, and it is almost always something like that peanut butter jar or the bags, trash bags, ziplocks, milk jugs, doesn't matter. "It feels better when you work for it and aren't so wasteful" is a phrase I will never be able to live without someone saying to me haha. My mom's side of the fam is in fact midwestern scandihoovian, so it fits the bill for sure.
