When I was a kid in Atlanta, if there was frost on the grass, school was cancelled. Then we moved to Detroit. We got a full foot of snow dumped between midnight and the time I had to go to school -- which was not cancelled that day. The difference is real.

I'm betting Detroit is equipped with snow plows, residents have snow tires and snow shovels. Georgians do not ergo snow & worse ice can cause disaster.

@@scifydi6446 Really has more to do with infrastructure and procedures. TxDot only has like 30 snowplows for the entire state of Texas. It almost never snows there so there's not really worth buying a ton of winter gear that will hardly ever get used.
@np62932 жыл бұрын
I grew up in Minnesota, where I think the 50% probability line for school cancellation was around 10 inches of snow, depending on timing. If the snow started late the night before and was still coming down without a chance to clear it yet, there was a good chance of school cancellation, but if the snow had started late the previous afternoon and ended around midnight and the lawn-services-turned-snow-removal companies had plenty of time to remove it overnight, you probably had to go to school in the morning. As someone from Florida, I totally agree with "You know a storm is serious, if Floridians are taking it seriously" This is 100% true, ESPECIALLY in central Florida. We don't take it truly seriously unless its a cat 4 or 5. It usually dies down A LOT by the time it reaches us. No matter how serious though, you always gotta get together with friends and have a hurricane party.

I'm from South Carolina. When I was 5, Hurricane Hugo hit. The eye was something like 90 or so miles from where my Parents and I lived. We lived in a trailer... in the middle of an Old Growth Pine Forest. Biiiig Carolina White Pines, the ones that were once known as "The King's Tree" before the Revolutionary War, because they were so straight and tall they were commonly cut down and used as ship's masts. Those trees were where MANY of the larger battleships of those days came from. 100+ foot tall trees with a 3-5+ foot diameter trunk at the base. And I lived in a TRAILER in the middle of that. And we did not evacuate. My Dad was on the couch in the living room that night, because he'd gotten home from work late that night and didn't want to wake up Mom in the bedroom. I was asleep in my bed. Around 2 or 3 am, I was awakened by a my Mom and Dad whisking me out of my bed to their bedroom followed by a LOT of VERY loud howling, and My Mom praying fervently. I prayed with her. I was 5. For the next several hours we lay there, huddled in bed, the world coming apart around us, the wind like a jet engine blasting in my little ears, with naught but my hands to cover them, and it was still painfully loud, even with Mom shielding me and a pillow over my head and being inside. I somehow went to sleep, I guess after the wind died down sometime early-ish that morning. It was somewhere around a Category 2 when it got over top of us. We woke up late the next morning, we slept in, and walked outside. The loud crash that woke up my Dad and got them to get me out of my room was a tree about 4 feet in diameter and at least 90 feet tall... being held several feet above the roof of our trailer... but nothing but the suspension and cab roof of my Dad's 80's Toyota Pickup. It was hanging DIRECTLY over where he had gone to bed that night on the couch. If not for God and that VERY well made truck... he may not BE here right now, and this story might be VERY different. There were a bunch of other trees fallen around our little single-wide trailer as well. One... that had missed the corner of my Parent's bedroom by about 6 inches. I... SURVIVED... Hurricane Hugo... by ONLY the Grace of My Heavenly Father God in Heaven, hallowed by his name. Amen.

Original midwestern here, winter parties (esp. in undergrad) are the best, you can bring more drinks because you can just put them on the patio, balcony, garage and they will get cold by themselves as the night goes on, leaving more room in the fridge...so much more space in your fridge in the winter in general, really; since I also went to school in a midwest town, we also knew who wasn't from the midwest just by how they drove, dressed, and what they wore when they went "out". One year we had a huge blizzard and they actually closed for the day (which is almost unheard of) so what my friends do? Build a giant snow ramp from their porch to snowboard from for their blizzard party that night (it was a Friday anyway, so the "snow day" didn't affect most of us anyway and they already were having a party that night)

While we all like to talk about , and name, the storms (Snowmeggedon, October Surprise, Blizzard of '77, Blizzard of '83) we know the difference is, when he pick up the snow with our shovels, and throw it somewhere, it stays where we threw it. First a pro tip-if you pull the wipers away from the windshield (so they are pointing up in air away from windshield) when it snows/freezes they won't freeze to windshield. You can scrape windshield, spray de icer on it, move them back into position, and then they'll run fine. Also, places in south close for snow cause southern vehicles typically are too bald to be effective snow tires (forget bout siped tires-not a thing in Alabama), the snow here is usually covering ice, it is also denser snow (like a slushie not powder) so it will refreeze multiple times. Not to mention most cities can't maintain adequate snow plow equipment because it gets used so rarely the parts will dry rot. Add in residences located on hills and stop signs on top of hills and you have a mess. So it is safer for everyone if they just close the roads....

Sitting here in North Central Florida, at 1:15 in the am, Thurs. A little bit of wind and some rain too. Dog will still go out so..... South of here, well wouldn't want to be you..... Dang stores are worse than the yankees. They rolled about noon yesterday, Wed. Even Walmart. Were like over 100 miles north of the center or more. Lights went out for about thirty minutes earlier, but electric company got right on it. Great Co-Op.

Lol! The snow comments, very accurate! On the other hand, this midwestern person stood outside in the middle of a hurricane... that was a very long time ago. Praying for all those in the path of Ian.

Midwest neighbor has some solid advice for those of us in Florida, though!

I was in Opal. We moved back to Michigan. I can do snow. Hurricane winds? I'm not cut out for that. I know my limits.

As my husband and I put boards over our windows in prep for the hurricane today, we were saying how happy we were we don't get snow! The wind we can deal with. Cold? Yikes!

I learned from my grandpa when I was young that "Well I spose" means it's time to go, I'm leaving. I was hoping she was gonna say something like "C'mon over for breakfast, I'll fix ya sm'eggs" LoL! Her voice and tone inflections are right out of the movie "Fargo", love it!

I needed this one, great job! I'm on the west coast of Florida, west of Tampa Bay, sitting alone in my house right now waiting out the hurricane, just getting some of the outer bands of rain and wind gusts. (We dodged a direct hit as Ian changed direction & came in way south of us.) Can't believe it may visit your area in NC! Just crazy. ❤

I really like this video! To be a decent prepper is a good thing. And in addition, it's kind of fun to purchase & pack the necessary stuff for go bag (for the cases, when one has to relocate asap) and emergency box (for the situations, when one has to survive something like power outage at home).

Would like follow up video "documentary" of Kim's hurricane beverage party.

Fun fact! I’m actually in the middle of hurricane Ian! Nothing like 100mph winds, tornados, floods, no power, and 15 inches of rain!

I’m just watching this at my timeshare near Disney and Kissimmee. It was a long night last night but we did fine. Headed back to Pittsburgh Saturday. This was so funny because we did so many things like filling two bathtubs with water in case we lost power. Bought touch lights m but wrong batteries!!

I've been in the south for several years now. I still have complete strangers say, "You're from Michigan, aren't you?" Apparently, Michiganders have an accent too. Who knew? 🤷😂
