This swing line dance - "Doin' the Jive ," - was so much fun to learn at Camp Hollywood (swing dance camp) - I attended in 2012. Mike Faltesec (sp?) - the third from the left in this video - was our teacher. Loved his style! - which is intentionally a little wild and somewhat overemphasized - but very modern, and great for performances and looks awesome! It was harder than hell to learn! - and I felt like an uncoordinated doofus and slow learner for most of the class. But we practiced enough times, so that by the end of class, I finally got it! And now, 4 years later, because of watching this KZbin video, it all came back (can't believe it!) If you ever have the opportunity to take a dance class with Mike Faltesek, do it! - he's an excellent teacher - explains everything clearly, demonstrates it really well, and is very encouraging and a lot of fun. Learning "Doin' the Jive" was a blast! And Camp Hollywood is a fun, awesome experience. I had zero background with Hollywood Style Lindy - mine is more Savoy Style. But I learned it, because of the excellent quality of the teaching. They taught us how to combine it with all the other swing moves I did know. As the instructors and fellow dancers from camp Hollywood said - unlike what some people may say - it's all swing. I usually feel very insecure and uncomfortable going to something like a dance camp by myself - I had hoped some friends would go with me - but I was fine there, and felt very included. So - in a nutshell, this video is awesome, and this dance is so much fun to learn and to do. :)

Pretty cool to hear what it would sound like in the modern age.

The lyrics to "Doin' the Jive" by Glenn Miller and Chummy MacGregor from 1937 are as follows: "You clap your hands, And you swing out wide. Do the Suzie Q, Mix in a step or two. Put 'em all together. And you're doin' the jive. Oh, you stomp your feet. You swing out wide. Mess around awhile. Shake it boogie woogie style. Everybody's swinging when you're doin' the jive. If you can't play Rummy or Bridge or the Dummy, Don't let it bother you. Because you'll be the king, When the band begins to swing. You'll be a smarty and the life of the party. If you do a bump. And you swing out wide. Drop a little bit. Beat it out. Make it fit. Everybody's happy when you're doin' the jive It may be somethin' but it's not the jive. It may be somethin' but it's not the jive. Well, what is the jive? (spoken) What is the jive? Why, man alive, the jive is the jive. Why, I cut you some riffs, and Faz [Irving "Fazola" or "Faz" Prestopnick, clarinet] did too. What are we supposed to do? Take it cool, now, Buck [Jerry "Buck" Jerome, tenor sax]. Give me a chance. You're all mixed up. The jive's a dance. Well, tell me some more. I'm a suck-egg mule. Put down your horn. We'll have dancing school. You clap your hands, And you swing out wide. Do the Suzie Q. Mix in a step or two. Put it all all together. And you're doin' the jive Oh, you stomp your feet. And you swing out wide. Mess around awhile. Shake it boogie woogie-style. Everybody's swinging when you're doin' the jive If you can't play Rummy or Bridge or the Dummy, Don't let it bother you. Because you'll be the king, When the band begins to swing. You'll be a smarty and the life of the party. If you do a bump. And you swing out wide. Drop a little bit. Beat it out and make it fit. Everybody's happy when you're doin' the jive."

@@ChaseThePinballWizard This is the lyric that no can figure out. But here are the actual words they say. It took me a bit of time to figure them out because this song was not a hit so there were no sheet music copes released: "Why, I cut you some riffs, and Faz [Irving "Fazola" or "Faz" Prestopnick, clarinet] did too. What are we supposed to do? Take it cool, now, Buck [Jerry "Buck" Jerome, tenor sax]."

This is the original audio track -- you can hear the audience on it. The stage was not mic'd so, the performer's were not picked up by the camera.

The Careless Lovers released a version about 15 years ago that was part of a revival of this song originally by Glenn Miller in 1937. This was by the Miller band that failed and broke up. Miller then formed a new band, the one that became a major phenomenon. The original recording was on Brunswick Records in 1938 by Glenn Miller with his first (failed) band. But in this song you can see the ingredients that he used for his hit band, combining dance music, a lit bit of all the styles in New York then, from Harlem to Manhattan and everything in between. It exploded with "In the Mood" but you can hear the origins in this song from 1937.
