I think of it like space in a retail store or a warehouse. That square footage has value. So, each item needs to justify it's existence if it's going to use up valuable real estate. And by thinking of it this way, I have not only made my home more livable but more functional as well. It's actually improved my standard of living.
@bitrudder379210 ай бұрын
I like that “unwanted guest“ idea also! And I find that I need different mindsets for dealing with different kinds of stuff. I’ve done a great job over the years of getting rid of excess stuff, and putting the useful stuff away in ways that make it very easy to access and put away again. Adding shelves and hooks in cupboards, for example, & trying to avoid putting one thing behind another if at all possible. I’ve used anger, joy, “bless the world,” finding the right recipient, “my home is my spa/health resort,” composting, repurposing, choosing the best recycling options, boldly trashing things in Annoyance with bossy elite globalists who want to tell me how to be sustainable (Oddly in direct opposition to my basic values), decorative editing, “don't give me gifts,'' and all of them continue to serve me in different ways. I like the “unwelcome guest“ idea for the area that I want to change from storage area to a more multi functional combination of necessary storage and activities that look a bit too ''much'' for me to want to have in other places. I physically cannot get rid of all that I want to get rid of to create the perfectly aesthetic space I desire, because those things need homes and I don’t want to crowd other spaces in my house. But in order to make it feel spacious and easy and calm, I have to mentally release a hobby I feel obligated to, but isn’t sparking joy, and I think this will be a helpful strategy to go with. I may have invited it, but it out stayed its welcome! A couple of other hobbies need some trimming, but they are the reason for the space as well as needing it for necessary storage.

That doesn't sound like the Hoarders I've seen on A&E. I've watched dozens of Hoarders episodes and every one I've seen, the on-site psychologist and cleanup crews do their best to be very understanding to the families involved. They know it's a problem rooted in loss and hardship, and they give the families aftercare in form of therapy and organizing assistance. They also bring in friends and family when available to explain to them that it's not just the hoarder being "lazy". I have yet to see a psychologist or cleanup manager on that show who isn't empathetic.

I agree he's making a big difference and hopefully helping to destigmatize the illness. Mentall illness is so misunderstood as it is, and people are so judgmental, almost to the point of it being pathological itself. It's gotta feel good to help people, one or two at a time, but so frustrating to be constrained to helping only one to two people at a time. At least that's how I feel regarding other kinds of mental illness that i better understand. Regardless, I'm proud of you. Every step forward is a step in the right direction! And every step to understanding what caused you to start hoarding is a step toward healing, too. And remember, if you ever stumble, don't fret. You haven't failed. You just need to pick yourself up, and get back at it again! You got this. One step at a time. One day at a time. You are doing it. I wish you all the best, I know you're working hard for it.

OMG--I just watched about 10 minutes of a channel called "Filth" (Episode 28) and I am totally appalled!! I shouldn't have even gotten THAT far, as when she started she was saying how she sprays any friends down before they come in her home, and when her family comes over they are "allowed" to pee in her toilet but they are NOT allowed to poop--she will take them to the gas station. I should have turned it off then, but I wanted to see her at "work". She went to a lady's home, probably a level 4- hoarder, and she was absolutely horrified. She just kept making nasty faces and putting this woman down time after time. I felt so bad for that woman I wanted to cry. God really Blessed this world when he put YOU here!! One of the things I've found when cleaning up a hoard (and I've done a fair few) is, unless you have a team of 20 people who are all on the exact same page and have endless time to fetch and carry, you cannot, CANNOT concern yourself with "someone could use this" or "recyclable" categories. If that's a huge worry, bag the items going out of the house in clear trash bags. Even better, rent a dumpster and don't worry about trash bags at all. Fill garbage cans with stuff, bring those cans to the dumpster, and dump them in, loose. I promise you, with 100% certainty, that the stuff in that dumpster WILL be gone through. The homeless, sanitation workers, neighbors, or those who make a living dumpster diving, people will absolutely "rescue" good, usable items from that dumpster.

@SIC6478 ай бұрын
@gulali270 I don't know if you have kids and pets. But imagine that someone told you, that you are gross and disgusting for having two kids and a dog. And that you should absolutely abandon them outside. You would be appaled and resist with your every fibre. That is how hoarders often feel about their things: They form an emotional bond with them. That is part of the hoarder disorder. (There are other reasons, but this one is where clinical hoarding differs the most from other causes of hoarding/accumulation). Hoarding is a mental illness. Just like how anorexia or schizophrenia are mental illnesses. These people's mental illness shows through hoarding. Some have physical issues that prevents them from cleaning. But for many the inability to declutter and clean is the very symptom of their disease. The decluttering and cleaning doesn't treat the illness, they need therapy for that. Just like how a person with anorexia doesn't stop having it, just because they eat a meal. So why does he declutter/clean for them (or give an anorexic person food)? Because it can help them have the mental calmness and the physical energy to start working on their issues, be is hoarding or anorexia. (And sometimes it is just a matter of keeping them alive, healthy, and housed).

3 years ago, I had to go through my parents' hoarded home. Mama had died and daddy went to a nursing home. My aunt only gave me 25 days to do it. My system had to be: if I saw one treasure in a box, the whole box came to my house to be sorted. I sent 17 contractor-sized trash bags of clothing alone that had been hung on hangers on gas or water lines to secondhand stores. They had a LOT of treasures, but I made one whole room of their house be a trash room because my aunt refused to get any dumpsters. I found mama's crafting stuff was neatly stored in totes and went to elementary schools in my city- I filled 8 contractor-sized bags with just #4 weight yarn alone! I sent a van full of knitting and crocheting pattern books to senior centers. A little history here: mama couldn't get rid of things and daddy was a compulsive spender. They became that way after my adult siblings died 7 months apart. They had so much stuff in their house that the main beam broke and had to be band-aided. Paper and vinyl records were the heaviest things in the house, so I took those things to the basement when that beam broke. I knew I was "churning" the hoard, but I couldn't get mama to get rid of any of it. This house REALLY reminds me of theirs.

As someone mentioned before, we’re all rooting for you, sweet homeowners! If it helps at all, I am a crafter/artist type too, and when you can diminish the hoard of things you don’t use, you will have better access to your yarn and other craft supplies that will bring you joy. I’m so proud of the progress you’re making, and pray for your strength to continue on. You deserve a healthy, happy home that you can enjoy.

Your philosophy about getting rid of stuff even if it hurts and telling the stuff they’re uninvited guests is pretty much the KonMari method but aggressive. 😆 So pleased to see a new vid! I’ve been binging this channel all week while tackling my own hoard.

tell the owners of this house that a random person on the internet watching your videos is proud of their effort ! no matter how long it takes; they keep sorting and cleaning items when you're gone! the door is open! keep up the hard work. the house owners are making great progress despite their health issues. hoarding is definitely an illness. owners deserve space to really live in their home.

Here are three things that made me subscribe to your channel: -Your voice, so calming. -Your sarcasm. -No music and no depressing talking (you know how some people use these videos to talk about their depression and problems. Totally valid, but not my thing). Keep the good you job, you and this couple!!🤩 Love from Spain ❤️

What an AMAZING couple: having a history of hoarding, both disabled, and yet they worked to clear out half of that room--wow! Sending them kudos and virtual hugs.

I can tell you that I have been sick all my life with various illnesses. I know first hand how the hoarding beings. And I think it’s so wonderful that you do this for people that can’t help themselves or they need a little encouragement to start. By the way, I LOOKED AT THE CARPET! You scared me when that came on then I started laughing. Only you would do such a thing! Lol

Thank you for being sooo respectful and truthful about how you just can't come in, and start throwing things away....there can be important papers like (car titles) or old pictures (from1912) mixed in with everything....you rock, dude!!!...love all your "round kick" references.... hilarious!!!...but more importantly your really educating us on what hoarding really stems from....sooo crucial in order for the judging to stop....and healing to begin!!!....

I’m the opposite of a hoarder because every time I get stressed or my depression kicks in I have to declutter. So I go through the whole house and get rid of things. I also go through my wardrobe at the end of summer and winter and if I didn’t wear it that season it goes because I’m not going to wear it next year either. Don’t get me wrong I do have sentimental things but they are either displayed or stored safely ( like my favourite baby clothes my sons wore ). Love how you keep explaining how hoarders think. Education is important and I believe you’re helping more people than you realise by doing your fantastic work. I’ll probably keep saying this but I love your wacky sense of humour. I sit here watching and chuckling away. Thank you.🤩 ❤

Hello, i wanted to give an heads up on my current situation. A couple months ago i've asked someone to help me over to start cleaning and removing stuff from my hoarded appartment (i lived with my mother and brother, my mother has been sent to the eldery house due of her degraded health). I've give to that person the free will to clean and remove all unnecessary/broken/junk stuff in the Kitchen. It took her 20 workhours to get this done. Watching your videos or her working helps me to sort the things in the other rooms, judging of my tastes and the will to keep some of my mother's souvenirs but i know i can't keep everything. The good thing is that i can move stuff around in order to declutter the hoard and to make me feel proud of living in that appartment :) (I'm living there for 22 years now, definitely i still have a lot of work to do in order to consider the house "hoardless" but i focus on making the rooms more liveable and functionnal... Also making some of my collectionable stuff on display to look at it and get inspired. Definitely, it has come a long way that i do end up doing some sorting stuff at 2AM.

Your videos are an inspiration to me. You help out so many and myself. My garage was stuffed with 3 generations of junk. We took 2 full days and decluttered 3/4 of it. Some we could donate (we live in a fairly large city in Ohio), a lot of metal was able to be scrapped, and the rest went to the dump. The feeling of relief is amazing and yes we've got a way to go but what a great start. Thank you for doing what you do for these wonderful people (and me too).

There are companies, at least where I live, that will come and pick up documents to be destroyed, depending on how much they have it may be worth the time to call and see what the cost would be for one big pickup after they go through everything. They company takes the documents to a facility where they are finely shredded into little particles and recycled for other things. Rooting for them and you, AWESOME job as always!!!! Love your channel! ❤

Wow, so proud of this couple. That sure doesn’t happen very often. I don’t know if it would be possible to get an update after a couple of months to se how they’re doing. We are really cheering these people on! I have a weird question - - when you are at these houses, do you use their bathroom? I’ve always wondered about that. I think about weird things!

At 17:52, you were using the suction hose and I was worried because the vacuum brush was sitting on top of the cable. I did that one and the brush ate the power cable and another time it shredded the rubber mat while I vacuumed a corner. Not sure if the brush keeps on spinning when you pull the suction hose out of the vacuum. Love your commentary and sense of humor. I've learned a lot from you. I would say my empathy and compassion has grown from watching your videos. God bless.
