in fact, a jet is built over the engine, except the A-10, which was built over the machine gun =P

I guess these geniuses have absolutely ruled out any possibility of a catastrophic engine failure. Especially on the...wait for it...TEST RUN ! You know, the kind of catastrophic engine failure that these early turbines were famous for---the kind where speeding, jagged, red hot, engine parts and massive balls of flame rip apart and incinerate everything in their path. Way to go team!

Igazán öröm ilyen öreg madarakat is látni működés közben!

@TheRantingCabbie for all references just check RR "Nene" or Klimov RD45 russian engine, this Lim 2A is a Polish licence built of twin seated trainer version of MiG-15. The bulky-chunky design & centrifugal compressor due to "english school" about jet rather "german school" with axial comperessor & sleek design. Moreover Nene was conceived rather as bomber than fighter engine.

Wikipedia org/wiki/BMW_003 Wikipedia org/wiki/Rolls-Royce_Nene Wikipedia wiki/Klimov_VK-1 Mig-15 production started with the copy of RR Nene. MiG-17 fighter aircraft with a turbojet engine VK-1 was the first Mach 1 fighter. Later the VK-1 also used in Mig-15. VK1 was the redesigned variant of the RR Nene. Still centrifugal. The End.

@DandAinTac Thanks for the reply. I actually saw what I believe was a Rolls Royce (I think that's who made it but it's been a while) in the Niagara Aerospace Museum. Big and bulky and only put out 4500 lb. of thrust. The compression manifold that fed the flame cans looked like cast metal. Thick and heavy looking.

@scwarzewaffe85 Exactly 30 Derwent & 25 Nene-C. Attlee Labour Government was not afraid or hostile to Russia and RR was happy to meet a cash&carry customer for 1st generation turbojet in order to develop improved types-that RR also hope sell to Russia.Nene was rather a bomber engine,the genius of MiG Bureau was "tailoring" around this powerful but huge unit a compact & slender fuselage.It worked!Note also how practical is the splitted and bolted fuselage for easy maintenance.Masterpiece!

Am I right to say that a turbojet's thrust losses at altitude are lesser than that of a turbofan ? I'm trying to find out the estimated thrust of the Tumansky R-95, the nonafterburning variant of the Tumansky R-13, at say, 35,000 ft.
@carlossoto9240
@carlossoto9240 8 жыл бұрын
If you follow the physics, then yes. It is easier for a turbojet (or low BPR) to retain net thrust as you go up in Mach number (takeoff is at low Mn and 35kft is at high Mn). And I say "the physics" because the same engine can be rated differently or the cycle could be re-matched for specific requirements like takeoff thrust, climb rate, acceleration to supersonic speed, etc.

DandAinTac Do some research and you will find that GE in 1941/2 when working on Whittles original design realised the limitation of Centrifical jet engines and much research information was out about Axial flow jet engines. GE decided that the Axial flow was more efficient and one of their engines J35 was built nd it was axial flor. It powered the F84 which flew 2/45 and also the F89 which flew shortly there after. The F86 also received a version lf the J35, the F86 was later because it did benefit from German swept wing research. The USA was not sitting on their hands and did not need the German "secrets"..
