I understand what Moog is feeling, I had my old Mightyboy broken Into a few years back, they had pushed it around the corner out of view and did the same thing, smashed up under the wheel and absolutely destroyed the key barrel and switch. Scary thing was when the electrician came to see the damage and take it for repair, he just cut a wire and bridged it with another one and the engine cranked 😱

Shame you didn't catch them in the act, here in the UK one of my mates was parked outside my house in his modded Toyota starlet glanza while we were having a few beers. The CCTV which ran in real time to a screen showed someone walk up to his car and start trying to open the door with a screwdriver. He didn't know what to do and panicked. I on the other hand knew exactly what to do........I wasn't going to confront someone with a screw driver unarmed and in the UK the police are pretty useless, if they turn up an hour after the crimes committed you're one of the lucky ones. So I decided the best idea was to grab a large axe and chase the guy down the street with it. As soon as I shouted at this guy and went nuts at him he started running. I chased him for a few minutes until he jumped over someone's 6ft garden wall. When he landed the other side he started screaming and swearing. I saw the house lights turn on and thought I'd better get away as I'm holding a 4ft axe. It turns out a few days later he had badly sprained his ankle after jumping the wall and been arrested for going equipped for burglary and trespassing because the homeowners called the police and he couldn't walk to get away. He got his karma. Moral of the story, leave other people's stuff alone, they worked hard for it and karma will catch up to you one day.

The value thing is so true. November 2019 my DC2 integra Type R got rear ended. Relatively light damage, car still 100% drivable and no chassis damage. At the time it was insured for $7200, which to be honest was a fair value for it on the market at that point. Quote to fix it was $7700. They wrote it off despite a solid month of me trying desperately to save it. Queue 2 years later and if it was repaired it would now be worth 30K.

@@popanollie1 i did buy it back with the intent to repair it but the insurance company deregistered it again despite my protests which made the whole process of getting it back on the road a much bigger and more expensive nightmare past the original 7K repair cost. (Im in NZ with fairly strict laws on damaged/potentially unsafe vehicles) It ended up sitting in the driveway for 6 months before I eventually onsold it to someone else who planned on turning it into a track car. About a month after the crash I actually found another DC2R for sale in original factory Milano red (stupidly rare) and bought that one, which turned out to be a much better financial decision in the long term anyway because it was in MUCH better condition. That's sucks man. If this ever happens again, find a bodyshop that's willing to write an estimate to 95% total threshold and cover the rest out of pocket. The shop I used to work at would do that for people that clearly loved their cars and wanted them to not be written off because it wasn't really any skin off our nose and totaling cars didn't make us hardly any money vs repairing them. We did it for an MR2 that had a full bodykit because the customer was willing to pay and willing to find out of production parts for us.

When I had my GTi-R back in 1998, it had so many aftermarket alarms and immobilizers fitted before I imported it that when it arrived at the docks in Southampton, it took us the better part of a day to get it to start. This hits me in the soul really hard but luckily they weren't able to take it. Still sucks immensely someone damaged and violated the car like that. I had my 1990 240sx stolen a few days before Christmas many years ago, it was later found in Mexico within a pile of other scrapped and cut cars. I was told I couldn't have it back because of condition but I also never got to see the car or photos. I know I'll never get to see that car again nor will I find a car like it ever again, it was a little rare. 80s cars were worse. My Dad had a shop next to someone with a Sierra Cosworth. The 3rd time it got stolen and recovered the owner was complaining to my dad about "how do they always manage to steal it?" so my Dad took the keys to his Ford Transit van, unlocked the Cossie, started the engine and drove it off right under the guy's nose. Factory immobilisers, moving the stalks for the door locks so you couldn't just fish them through the rubber door seals and putting plates in the door to stop the coat hanger trick were massive game changers between 80s and 90s cars.

One thing to note about fuel pump kill switches on loud cars, we love ours because you can hear the car start then choke out and die when it clears the fuel lines. Makes for a really good alarm and a way to panick any thieves that do get it started. Also if you own an older 4wd with barn doors on the back check those rubbers, especially on the smaller door! Most old land cruisers you can rip the rear windows out with your bare hands cause the rubbers are 30 years old, great if you lock your keys in the car, but not so great if someone else wants it

That's what really annoys me. I had an old 80's Navara with a full sound system in it, and they destroyed the driver's door, same as this GTi-R, then mutilated the dash trying to get the headunit out. Ripped up all the carpets, tore the wiring looms to shreds trying to pull the amp out from under the seat. If they'd have just taken their time and bought a screwdriver along instead of a chainsaw, it would have been repairable. The damn thing was out in the middle of nowhere - nobody was going to sneak up on them and catch them in the act. They had all the time in the world, yet they still went out of their way to destroy it.

When someone tried to steal my car way back, they brought their own little RAA battery, they pumped up the flat tires, and then brought their own fuel so they didn't have to stop at a station. They just smashed the alarm, I don't think alarms provide much protection at all. To this day i still wonder what happened to it, and still hope maybe, just maybe it may turn up again somewhere, but i know my chances. I'm glad for you guys they weren't able to take the car. GTIR is one of the JDM classics! I hope they catch the dirtbags...

Worst Case scenario they stripped it apart for parts and destroyed the rest of the chassis Best case scenario somebody rich in some country smuggled it and turned it into some crazy illegal tuner car Either ways Im sorry for your loss.

Many many years ago? If you're in a country with the "25 year rule", we're talking like 10 years max. If you're in Japan (or Canada, or any other country that doesn't have that outdated & bs law) then the rest of the 🌎 that has import restrictions is super jealous!

@@DM-wp9vq Australia like around 15 years ago... The import laws have changed heaps over the years, but at the time the vehicle had to be only 15 years old and was even allowed to be modified. Just had to comply with ADR's. The car was fresh from Japan and had heaps of nice gear. HKS turbos, front pipes, intercooler, Trust exhaust, Tein coilovers, Nismo body kit, Brembo brakes. I had put a full JL Audio system in it too. Was a weapon!

Ah, back in the day it was so simple, you just pulled the the rotor arm out of your distributor and put the cap back on, if you also disconnected the ground from your electric fuel pump then you really thwarted most attempts.

Easy enough to do that now. Just take the fuel pump relay out of the fuse box.

The most important thing is you're both safe. I don't know about thieves in Australia, but here stateside, catalytic converter theft is on the rise. I read some of them are armed (guns) so there is something to be thankful here - you didn't interrupt the theft in progress and risk life or injury. We appreciate you guys!

Hopefully someone who is watching this, might know them and be able to fix them, or have them cut off from the folks with the really good gear. Stealing the battery is very drugs imo. And they're clearly not seasoned pros. In fact they sound like those people who embarrass the gangs, and that many people including their associates, don't want around

Another important tip if you own a desirable car is to avoid leaving your keys near the front door at night, it's remarkably easy to reach through a letterbox with a bit of coat hanger wire and snag them. I've personally done this 3 times trying to get back into my own house after locking myself out and friends houses for the same reason, you'd be surprised how far into the house you can reach if you can see what you're doing or have someone to guide you (ie. someone looking through the window). I'm told that if someone is targeting your car they sometimes knock on the door in the guise of a lost pizza delivery man (or similar forgettable, often helmeted disguise) in the evening and use the opportunity to scope where your keys are placed.

Exactly what he said!! Back in the day, a horse thief would be shot when caught. Now day when someone pinches your iron horse they get a slap on the wrist and sent to the naughty corner for ten minutes time out. I just feel sorry for you guys, yes you have a lot of cars. That's because you work your asses off to enjoy your passion and not make a easy target for some gutter rat. I hope they find the turds and let someone give a solid 5 minute lesson in honesty !!

I had an old fox body mustang, in highschool that I used to have to start with a screw driver due to the key being lost ever since we saved it from a back yard. Finally after some time, I bought a new key switch set and it took me hours to get the old one out due to not having a key to turn the lock. I had to pick, pry, and pull out ever tumbler to get it to slide out. After I was done, I felt so accomplished and excited that my car finally started with a key again... the very next morning, there was a bolt lodged and sheered in that new key cylinder from someone attempting to steal it.

I own a vf ssv redline ute, the ONLY company that would even get close to insuring for current market value was shannons. I was worried that it would come a hefty premium, turned out they were the cheapest quote i got. Now all my stuff is insured through them, Awesome company to deal with.

Bummer guys - but also glad you managed to get it back before it went on a joyride! One of my cars was jumped on (I got in it and wondered why the seat was up... then realised the roof was down instead!). Bastards - insurance fixed it, but it was never the same again. I wonder if they just took the battery home to charge it and were planning to come back for another go?

As briefly mentioned in the video, make sure your keys are secure in your house. As cars become harder and harder to steal, a more common occurrence now is for thieves to break into your home and steal the keys, as many modern cars simply cannot be hotwired any more - no key, no vroom vroom. Don't leave your keys by the front door, or in plain view from a window. Ideally get a key safe and keep your keys in there, away from easy access. I've had this conversation with various police officers - making your stuff harder to steal will make thieves go elsewhere looking for an easier score. Same applies to your house, any outbuildings and so on. Make it secure and make it *visibly* secure as a deterrent.
