I've gone, kind of the best of both worlds. Mk7.5 alltrack. DSG and 4motion. Slightly heavier wagon sure. I've done some good mods, IE intake, turbo erbow, and intercooler, is20turbo, custom exhaust (res delete, 2.75" pipes to 2.5" pipes at the splitter, stock mufflers with nice tips. Stage 3 ECU tune + TCU. Currently does highish 4sec 0-100s on launch control. With some better/new tyres, we can scrub a bit more off that time, and could takeome extra weight out of the boot if I really wanted some reduction. Still has flappy paddles, and brakes are the same as the GTI not the R. On the down side it is the 1.8, not a 2L, but it's faster than a stage 1 Golf R even with only an is20. Such a fun platform. Love this video, and Luke would be a great regular addition. So natural on the camera and amazing commentries, really informative.

That was a surprise, I expected the GTI to be a decent bit quicker on track where the awd is more of a weight penalty than grip advantage. Good news for me as a mk8 R owner.
@Ferretsnarf Жыл бұрын
It's definitely a track that will help the GTI more than the R with a driver more inclined to FWD in a single hot lap on a new track where the R was lapped first and the GTI was modified. And still the R came out faster. Driver even said he felt like there was more in the R and didn't say the same of the GTI. This was best case scenario for the GTI. For what it's worth I did once own a Mk7 GTI and a 7.5 Golf R. The GTI definitely feel more responsive and lighter, due to the lighter drivetrain and smaller turbo, but I find the R much nicer to drive and much more powerful.

Ironically, this was the very scenario I faced in 2018. I went to upgrade my MK VI GTI to a Golf R, but when I got to the dealership, everything changed. They had a 9k mi. VWOA CPO GTI MK VII Autobahn, basically a FWD Golf R with a sunroof (not available on the R) that was about $18,500 cheaper out the door. And because it came from corporate, all the wear items were replaced (e.g. new tires, brake pads etc.) vs just passing inspection. With the difference I had the GTI tuned to ~350HP; I bought a compact pickup for winter duty (and was able to sell my snow tires); AND I bought a 1 year old snowmobile. Talk about a no-brainer. I still love the Golf R in Lapiz blue though.

Nicely done on the ending, and the foreshadowing was perfect! Also, didn’t realize the R was FWD biased unless there was need for power to the rear. I just had figured it was 50/50 around town, with the ability to send 90% to either end... not sure where I got that idea!
@timwilliams2343 Жыл бұрын
according to the interballs, "in the past, VW used a Haldex AWD system that could send up to (but no more than) half of the engine's torque to the rear wheels, but for the mk8, VW opted for a torque-vectoring rear differential that can send 100 percent of the engine's torque to an individual wheel (via a multiplate clutch)"; maybe Luke should have had the R in drift mode?
